I went off-grid 30 years ago. My wife divorced me so I was free to live my dream living in the Maine woods where I set up my homestead and I wouldn't change a thing. I bought 100 acres of land for $15,000 American, that had been strip-cut which allowed me the opportunity to harvest the animals, land, and vegetation as needed. I wouldn't trade my lifestyle for millions of dollars. I am now 69 years young and I am still living my dream. City people have no idea of our passion and we should keep it that way. You are a good man hang in there.

Dear Mr James, I just wanted to tell you about an experience of mine during my recent vacation in Thessaloniki, Greece. One evening, I decided to walk to the local Marks & Spencer store on Tsimski Street to get a bag of British crisps as an after-dinner snack. The food hall was on the top floor of the store and when I found what I wanted to get, I went to the checkout which was manned by a young male staff member. After I told him in Greek that I didn't speak Greek, in English, he tried selling me a Marks & Spencer loyalty card. I told him I had no need for one because I was from Canada (Windsor, Ontario, actually) and that Marks & Spencer had pulled out of Canada some years ago. He immediately started talking about some guy named "James" who lived in Canada in a place beginning with an "O". Oregon? he asked to which no, I replied, Oregon being in the United States. Ottawa? I asked. Ontario? I asked. He said no; James Bay? I asked. He said no that this guy had built a log cabin out in the wilderness...It then dawned on me: "You don't mean Shawn James and My Self Reliance, do you? I asked. The man's face immediately lit up, indeed he was a fan of yours!! So, here I was, a fellow Canadian, on vacation in Thessaloniki, Greece, talking about you and your channels with a Greek male clerk at the Marks & Spencer store on Tsimski Street... I hope you enjoyed this story and seeing how far you have reached people...

My wife is a registered nurse and she says the same thing. . This is not the flu. She is very worried of the impact this will have on all people. She said "they don't shut down a major distributing country because of a flu" She believes this will go around the globe more than once before they come up with a working vaccine. All the while the virus has time to mutate and this will impede the vaccine tests and research. This is not to be taken lightly. I also want to say, I admire shawn and all he does and talks about on his channel. I try my best to use his philosophy in life... but this time I cant. My wife out smarts him in medical knowledge hands down. If she says prepare for the worst, then I do.
@Jimwill014 жыл бұрын
@@craftybynature3760 I'm not a medical person, but this virus has me more concerned than the swine flu, bird flu or any of the other recent flu's. I don't have TV so I'm not exposed to media hype. I do get my info from the internet, but not a single source. And I spend time examining the reported numbers, realizing they may be lies that are trying to make it look better than it is, or even trying to make it look worse. Not panicking, just trying to keep an eye on what's happening and being reported. As for "stocking up" I usually try to buy a month's supply at a time, each month. And I just got my groceries, so I'm good for at least a month without leaving the house.

It is so easy to grow from the food you throw away, or may not use in a stockpot. roots of leeks, scallions, onions, garlic, celery, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, yams--all can be started in a bit of water then buried in dirt and will grow. possibly even in winter, in a hut covered with old windows?

@Bobby Brady I really didn't want to think the medical personnel were going on TV to say stop buying masks for the nefarious reason of wanting them for themselves. @Bobby Brady my comment was more directed at the suggestion that doctors are giving guidelines based on "nefarious" (wicked or criminal) reasons which I find insulting given the oath they take. Your comments on the matter seem very informed and I thank you for your service in the armed forces. I've removed my comment as I don't want to seem like I'm dismissive of the information, but I do take offense with people suggesting conspiracy theories about why medical professionals make recommendations when trying to manage medical outbreaks.

Sprouts: One of my favorite ways to get "Veg" is to sprout Mung Beans. These take a week to grow, and the seeds keep for years. The cost is very low. You can grow a few to full size to get more seeds. Watch out the deer love them!
@FeedtheMightyMe4 жыл бұрын
"they are very nutritious, but they smell like death"
@myCloudWatcher4 жыл бұрын
@@FeedtheMightyMe Time to learn more, you need to keep the wet seeds washed with FRESH water. If the water goes "stale" you will not get tasty sprouts. Start with 1 day of underwater soaking, then wash off that water and leave the "damp" seeds to grow for a few hours. A few times in the day, re-wash and rinse off the seeds/sprouts. After a few days the "hulls" will start to shed. Dump the seeds into a LARGE pot of water and pick out the sprouts. I toss the rest in the garden. Now take the washed and clean sprouts and keep them damp for a few days. You can decide how large would want them to grow. When green start to show, into the cold box they go..... My sprouts NEVER smell at all.

Shawn, remember when the media went berserk over Y2K? The power grid was going to crash (fuel pumps would stop pumping), computers were going to stop working (banks, etc) and our societies were going to be thrown into chaos, etc. A lot of people spent a lot of money preparing for something that didn't even come close to happening. The media needs to be held accountable for reckless reporting. Their actions in such instances have caused more damage than their alleged crisis.

The yearly flu has killed and infected millions more than this COVID19 has. Something like 98.9% of infected people get nothing more than a fever of 103 and dehydration. Treatment is taking care of the side effects, lower the fever and replace lost fluids & electrolytes with Gatorade etc. No children or young have died (they do with the flu) and not until your over 60 with other health issues (diabetes, COPD, hypertension, immune disorders etc) does your risk of developing serious problems arise above 4%. The flu is, again, much higher. I'm with you, all this panic that's being created is wasted time & energy. Instead of adding more hype they should be passing on useful information about the symptoms and to not infect grandma & grandpa or put them at risk. If you have a fever or dry cough, stay away from others etc. Runs on toilet paper & diapers etc are only adding to the problem and all those surgical masks don't stop you from catching it. It's only the N95 masks that do and they are only good for 1 use & most expire within 1 hour of use. But at least, they aren't spreading their colds to others, lol

The factual science predicts something like 50% or so of the population eventually getting infected at some point (not all at the same time, but still). With no vaccine available yet and about 5..10% or so of cases requiring intensive medical care, that can overload the healthcare system pretty quickly.

Last time epidemic with 2-3% death rate was Spanish flu. I mean ww1 probably had some part of it easily spreading but still. 500 million infected and 17-50 mil dead. I mean 2-3% is low but when but into global scale it isnt that small. I seriously suggest to look serpentza so people could understand china's current culture and why that virus actually got to spread so easily. I myself arent really scared about that disease. My country health care is adequate enough and i am not in the risk group. And probably most of people under 60 shouldn't care when they are being just clean.

I thought about you and your isolated self reliance this weak with people self quarantining. Getting food has been my main outing recently. I value the lifestyle you and your wife have chosen. Bless you both. 🙏

@Murray Barker How is that? Does it taste like maple syrup in anyway? Can you describe what the flavor is like? I've never heard of birch syrup. Where are you located? Not your address or town just generally. This has sparked my interest. 👍
