Hey friends, here's a few words from Wikipedia (the source of all knowledge lol) about the two sets of primarys. I have chosen to give a brief explanation of the traditional artists wheel which uses the RYB primaries but I invite your thoughts and discussion 😊 Here it is : 'As an illustrative model, artists typically use red, yellow, and blue primaries (RYB color model) arranged at three equally spaced points around their color wheel.[5] Printers and others who use modern subtractive color methods and terminology use magenta, yellow, and cyan as subtractive primaries. Intermediate and interior points of color wheels and circles represent color mixtures. In a paint or subtractive color wheel, the "center of gravity" is usually (but not always[6]) black, representing all colors of light being absorbed; in a color circle, on the other hand, the center is white or gray, indicating a mixture of different wavelengths of light (all wavelengths, or two complementary colors, for example).' Anyway I think everyone is right! ❤️

Thanks Shayda. What are considered primary colors depends on whether you're printing or painting. There isn't a set of primary colors which can work for both purposes.

Shayda, I do love your videos, they've been so helpful moving from acrylics into the scary world of watercolours, but I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree about the definition of a tertiary colour. I was taught by my art teacher many, MANY years ago that tertiary colours are made when all three primary colours are found in a mix. Either by mixing a primary and its complimentary or by mixing two secondary colours. Mixing orange and yellow together still gives you an orange. It still only contains yellow and red. Yellow Orange is actually an intermediary colour. I'd love to know when this changed. I really love Carol A McIntyre's work, but that's probably because she would agree with me. :-D

I studied art school and we never had such a comprehensible lesson on this. Let me assure you, taking classes or attending art school don´t necessarily mean it´s worth it. I have learnt a lot there but rather how to improvise or make my own shortcuts to the desired result, I don´t recall a single flip on colour theory. :D Shayda did a great job making it so super simple.

I was just searching for information on the color wheels, etc. This answered all my questions, thank you. I crochet and have a project to do for my sister who wanted a different color scheme (than what I previously did for my mother in purple tones) which is pink and black. I wanted to add a little more in so found also a gray and a variegated (white/lt gray/gray/black) and did a sample swatch and it looks amazing. It is for a handbag. Thanks again, I will be referring to this many times when I get stumped. 🤩

Hello, dear. A beautiful video as always! The RBY-Colour wheel as you explained it here is, as you mentioned, the generally used primary colour set. Although even if you want to leave the CMY-wheel out, purple and red do not combine into magenta as you mentioned 3:53. Magenta and yellow mix into red. It would be nice if you would include that as to avoid any confusions, for this is supposed to be an explanatory video. Thank you. x
@amandaelizabeth214 жыл бұрын
This is an explanatory video for beginners. Colors like magenta and cyan are not well known for non-artists, and would actually make it more confusing to learn color theory, I think. Using RBY is more accessible to beginners because these colors are more commonly recognized in the natural world than cyan and magenta. Once we've mastered the basics of mixing colors that are directly next to each other on the wheel, then you can start teaching us about the "proper" primary colors that allow for more advanced color mixing. As a beginner myself, I can assure you that starting with magenta, cyan, and yellow would cause much more confusion, even if it was more accurate. Like I said in another comment, what is accurate isn't always what is most attainable to learn for the beginner's mind.
@iribiss41554 жыл бұрын
@@amandaelizabeth21 I get where you are coming from, but if you explain color theory and primary-, secondary- and tertiary colors, stating that magenta is made out of purple and red is more than prone to create misunderstandings, especially for beginners. Now, regarding accessability for beginner artists, everyone is different. I for example used to struggle with mixing theory when I used RBY, because it would never turn out to be clean colors, but muddy ones, _because_ the mixing theory just isn't proper. Therefor it helped my comprehension and application of the theory alot when I learned about CMY.

underkava Elementary art education materials,dictionaries, and electronic search engines often define primary colors effectively as conceptual colors (generally magenta, yellow, and cyan; or red, green, and blue) that can be used to mix "all" other colors, and often go further and suggest that these conceptual colors correspond to specific hues and precise wavelengths. Such sources do not present a coherent, consistent definition of primary colors since real primaries cannot be complete.
@jenfar724 жыл бұрын
Yes, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow can be used as a mixing system. So can Red, Blue and Yellow. And once you've mastered the basics of the Red, Blue and Yellow mixing system you can move on to Split Primary mixing which incorporates Magenta (cool/violet-leaning red) and Cyan (cool/green-leaning blue). Split Primary mixing will give you a wider gamut of colours than Cyan, Magenta and Yellow on their own.

Look at the color wheel. The primary colors are established as red, yellow, and blue.
@Manchessollte4214 жыл бұрын
@@amandaelizabeth21 it doesn't matter when the color wheel was just taught incorrectly centuries ago so we still use it today. You cannot 'create' magenta. You CAN create red. Thus it is not a primary color. This is basic science, not something that artists need shielding from. Learning improper technique is not something any artist wants.

@wyrdness14 жыл бұрын
tertiary means between They are the hues that lie between a secondary colour and one of the primaries that make it up. What you are thinking is complimentary colours.
@jenfar724 жыл бұрын
bel, You are correct. Tertiary colours are made when all three primary colours are found in a mix. Either by mixing a primary and its complimentary or by mixing two secondary colours. Tertiary does not mean "between". Mixing orange and yellow together still gives you an orange. It still only contains yellow and red. Yellow Orange is actually an intermediary colour. Intermediary comes from intermediate and that DOES mean between.

I'm kinda disappointed that you teach the wrong primary colors, actual primaries from which you can mix everything (which is the point of calling them primaries) are Magenta, Cyan and Yellow. From the kinda Vermillion Red and Ultramarine Blue you filled in first you could neither make any kind of vibrant purples or magenta nor any kind of vibrant greens, it will all be muddy to brown. Just try mixing from these colors in watercolor and you'll see what I mean :)

@@ShaydaCampbell I know, but since it has those problems with mixing purples and greens I really don't think it's a good choice to teach to beginners. They'll try and mix those and might not understand why they get muddy colors. I realise you further in explained about cool+cool and warm +warm for mixing clean colors, so that remedies that. I just think introducing the old model as basics doesn't make much sense. Also just so I'm not misunderstood, no hate here, this is definitely a topic for debate ^^
