The "Magic Man" is Mike Fisher. He was an American who had gone to Canada to avoid being drafted into Vietnam War. He came across the border & went to Ann's concert when she was with Hocus Pocus where they immediately fell in love. After Nancy joined the band in '74 they wrote "Magic Man" & released it in '75. It became their first number one hit! Ann shared: "It’s absolutely my leaving home song. My mother wasn’t all too sure that the best thing for me was to-even though I was already 21, she wasn’t sure that I should be jumping into this full-time sexual cohabitational relationship with somebody in a whole other country. She was calling me, going, ‘What are you up to? C’mon, I don’t know if you should be going this. Come on back! Be careful, give it some thought!’ And I was just like, ‘Nope, nope, I’m gone! I’m in!’ It was love at first sight that lasted for about eight years! But “Magic Man” was definitely written about the spell that I was under and my conversations with my mother about it at the time." "Straight On" next.....

Yeah, the only good thing that dirty, draft dodging commie lover was be the manager, and one the guitarist for them. Other than that, pure trash and useless. 3 of my uncles served, volunteered before they were drafted, all 3 came home, my dad would’ve but he was too young, it was ‘officially’ over, no more draft or volunteers by the time he was 17, by just over a year. One of my grandpas was in WWII, korea, and early Vietnam. The other couldn’t, he tried joining in WWII, he had some minor medical issues, but severe enough they wouldn’t take him. He ended up in aviation during WWII, helping to develop and build the aircraft we needed, until aerospace and one of the project leads/QC for manufacturing of one of the companies that made parts for the Apollo missions, his company he ended up at even helped make some of the subsystem for the tomahawk cruise missiles, was his last project before he fully retired, for the second time. The others were army/navy…USMC here, so yeah I give them shit all the time.

Ann Wilson and her sister Nancy left their native Seattle to follow two brothers that had gone to Canada as members of a band. The song was written for the man that Ann had fallen for. He was her magic man. I saw that band play at a local bar here in western Canada with some friends and we knew then that the Wilson sisters were destined for much greater things. About a year and a half or so later the album Dreamboat Annie came out and raced up the charts.

"Magic Man" is the one who first made love to the girl in the song. He's the one she fell in crazy, passionate love with because he wooed her and spoke lovely, firey things to her; they got high, they talked about all manner of mysterious things and they made love. That is enough of a reason for this, most probably, teenage girl to call him the Magic Man. "A woman from a child", is how Ann Wilson described it, in the song. Back when Heart was putting these songs out it was record, tour record, tour. Bands from the 70's would do shows 7 nights a week, sometimes for weeks on end. Old school bands use monitors which are the forward to the band speaker. You see rocker using them as lifts a lot in the 80's. She is a virtuoso with her head voice, she has good control well into the range where most have to switch to falsetto. Bon Scott did that in a male voice with early AC/DC. Lex nailed in a video once it's range most adults can't hit without going falsetto or whistle. Mind you I don't me just hitting I mean controlled notes.

@@Jessica_Roth It has been said it's about the manager though. Although she did date the guitarist. You're right his name is Roger.

Her voice is mixed. She sings at that lower volume and the person at the mixing board balances the volume of her voice with the other instruments. and she’s singing for real. There was NO auto tune pussy stuff - either you could sing or you did t make it. I love her sultry voice here. She’s conveying that this mysterious man has swept her up and she’s completely fallen for him, right or wrong. It’s strong! ❤

I think these 2 would love everything about the The Pretenders - Precious, The Wait, Tattooed Love Boys, etc. Chrissy's voice, style, and talent are equally impressive as Ann's...

Written and composed by Ann and Nancy Wilson, the song is sung from the viewpoint of a young girl who is being seduced by an older man (referred to as a Magic Man), much to the chagrin of her mother, who calls and begs the girl to come home. In an interview, Ann Wilson revealed that the "Magic Man" was her then boyfriend, band manager Michael Fisher, and that part of the song was an autobiographical tale of the beginnings of their relationship

Such a great song. So authentically female from multiple angles. A great window into the human experience. Growth, temptation, worry, adventure. Timeless.

If you haven't seen Heart do Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors, I HIGHLY recommend it. By the end of the song, Robert Plant is in tears. Perhaps the greatest tribute ever recorded. Ann is on a shelf with only a couple other females in Rock. Linda Ronstadt, Pat Benetar and Ann Wilson. The Holy Trinity.
