She didn’t say she can’t trust him with money. She said she doesn’t like depending on people for money because of how she was raised. And she admits it’s not working from her and she is calling in for help. She seems pretty rational about the problem despite her emotional baggage, which can be a very hard cycle to break. @@TonyCox1351 /RETIRE BY 30 IN AMERICA / Hey Lady. It's not wrong to point out how a large amount of a generation got Hoodwinked by Feminism. There's nothing toxic about It. Masculinity isn't sitting there holding back for people's feelings. If anything that's what leads people down the road of suffering. Everyone else will tell you what you want to hear. Combining finances is one of the best decisions me and my wife made once we got married. Every paycheck we sit down and budget our money and we’ve done it so many times now that it doesn’t take but 5-10 minutes. If you don’t trust your spouse enough to combine finances then why get married to that person? I understand in some marriages one person might have a spending problem, but that’s not a reason to just have separate finances, that’s more of a reason to seek counseling and try to get on the same page. Or definitely get that situated before deciding to get married.

How could someone work so hard against themselves? She has a man that loves her and she's working hard to remain separate from him financially. Doing a male dominant job at her age AND she's personally making bad purchases on top of it?!? Can someone say self sabotage? Something is going on here.

I always always find that combining finances to be unreliable. 1st of all, marriage is just 2 people partnering up to make lives better. Wife/husband will be the most important partner, but not the only partner. There's business partners theres friendship partner etc.. And they dont combine finances.. What worked best has been that people have a joint account that pays the bills and does the couple activities. And then theres personal accounts that's the back bone of each individual. You and your partner wont be pressured or gaslighted into different things just because the"marriage" is binding. And when the differences arise on a philosophical level, each party has the right to simply walk away and being financially fine. For ex, most people get married between 20s to 30s for the 1st time. And they are still kids by mental development and societal experiences. They change and develop, some grow to want kid or kids, some grow to no longer want kid or kids. People say oh you should talk this through before marriage. Thats the ideal situation but its never ideal, isn't it? No one can say their philosophies are the same 10 years later and its very normal for couple to grow apart and becomes no longer fit. Plan for the worst, have separate bank accounts.

I don't believe her for a second. She doesn't share finances with her husband because she chose that, she doesn't share finances with her husband because she's so bad with money HE split his finances from HER. "How come I don't have any money?" Guarantee you her husband has been explaining this to her for the last two decades and got fed up. She openly admits he's good with his money, and she's a financial train wreck.

I have separate accounts from my DH. I advise anyone who is married to someone paying court-ordered child or spousal support or student loans do the same. When the courts or our government decide they are going to garnish your income they are indifferent regarding whether or it's a joint account. Oddly, Dave has had callers that have had this happen to them.

Interesting take. My take is... joint income, joint accounts, joint assets, joint debts, joint responsibilities, joint etc. OR don't get married. Live together and play house. Seriously if you don't trust your spouse, you don't have similar values as your spouse, you aren't willing to take the good and bad of your spouse, etc then you aren't truly married anyway. And when you marry someone who had a life before, you accept all that comes with that, good and bad. Or don't marry that person.

@@GAFB1122 The spouse was not the problem. The problem in my case was an ex-wife and a court that enabled her. The child support he paid was never enough .... I do remember 1 call Dave got. She had a business account with her and her husband's name on it. One day they found $7000 drawn out of the account. Turned out there was a student loan the husband totally forgot about. It would seem that the United States government had a better memory. 😉

Me too. People with children from a previous relationship should be very cautious if they remarry. It's all too common for the surviving spouse to take all and leave it to her or his kids, essentially disinheriting the kids from the other spouse. Combining finances in that situation is foolish.

I have a friend whose husband treats her like she’s a guest in the house. They’ve been married almost 40 years. He won’t give her a debit card. She worked and retired. They redid the kitchen and he wouldn’t let her pick out anything, he’d ask her and then go to the opposite direction. She can’t even have anybody over I told her that’s her fault. She should’ve done something about that along time ago. And she’s such a sweet lady, dear friend. he’s got the whole basement at his pleasure and she has extra rooms in the house but she can’t have a sewing room. She said she feels like moving out and she’s a good Christian you know as far as any of us can be. it breaks my heart for her. I told her he’s a bully, I know she loves him though. He would be out of my life.

@burly636 Wait a minute...He won't "give" her a debt card? She has no say in the matter? He wouldn't "let" her pick out decorations for the re-doing of the kitchen? Usually men don't even care about that stuff. He even went so far as to go the opposite direction of what she wanted? Aaaannnd she can't have a sewing room (something she enjoys), aaaannnd she can't have anybody over?? If she were my friend, I would tell her he does it because he CAN. She ALLOWS this. She needs to stand up for herself because this is emotional and financial abuse. It's 2024, she needs to step up for herself because there is too much information out there to put up with that nonsense from anybody. Heck, she can do better and probably at least have a "peace of mind" being alone , without him...and not in prison. Tell your friend to stand up for herself. Blessings to her.

And then there's a lot of them they claim they want it. Only when it's convenient. But over the course of my life there's been so many times I've seen so-called traditional women divorce a perfectly good man. If people want a traditional relationship marriage or otherwise. Then they should move to traditionalist countries. Otherwise it's just a gamble until the other person gets bored. And 85% of the time it's usually the woman filing for divorce for little if any reason. So ladies you made your bed Enjoy laying in it Minimalism and cheap property for the win. Have retirement completely funded in 4 to 5 years doing OTR Trucking. Work another year and pay cash for a house in the fly over states.
