SHE DROVE 15,000 MILES ON CONVENTIONAL OIL!!! 2006 JEEP COMMANDER 5.7 HEMI OIL CHANGE

So I was driving my moms 2006 Jeep Commander (w/ 5.7 Hemi) and noticed her oil service was due over 10,000 miles ago (or 8 months ago). That means she was running on conventional motor oil for almost 15,000 miles!! Needless to say, I decided to take action before she blows up yet another Jeep. She ran her old jeep liberty on super old oil (probably burnt right through all the oil) until it was completely seized. Oh yeah and we had a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I can't recall them ever changing the oil on that either.

Update: ... less than a year later she blew the engine. Within the last 11 months they put 13,000 miles on the Jeep, it burned through the oil and now it has major damage. Don’t be like my mother. Check your oil AND change your oil.

Some people are on a path in life that says, "I don't care. Whatever. Shut up. Go away. It's irrelevant." And this mindless behavior will continue through more cars because there is no punishment for destroying them. No lesson to be learned. The really thin synthetic oil in a damaged engine wasn't a good idea. Experience tells me heavier oil will waste less past worn piston rings. So a 10w40 or 15w40 syn-blend would likely have made the engine last longer.

I've never seen a car ad saying the car was lady driven. That being said, the more I think about it, every female I know and have known never checked/checks their fluids or tires. They have other people do it for them. It's not rocket science. If you can follow a cooking recipe (which includes measuring), you can check your fluids and tire pressure. If you can read, you can figure out what fluids go where if you need to top them up. Owners manuals have the information you need. If you don't have the owners manual, ask someone. You only have to ask one, then use the big squishy thing inside your skull to remember. If you can't remember, there is always notepads and pens to take notes.

Lady driven can be the worse. I went to look at a 102K mile cobalt briven by a young asian lady. They stated "oil was just changed about 1,000 mi ago". The camshaft was covered in rust. Like wtf? Lady driven tho. They bought her a honda.

I'm really curious - what is the deal behind those short oil service intervals in the US? Here in Germany, most car manufacturers advice customers to have an oil change done rather on a yearly cycle or after 20.000 km (~12400mi) on the clock. Of course, the exact information can differ from brand to brand and model to model, but in most cases it's something about the mentioned amount. I own a 2019 Opel Corsa and recently had the first service done with a mileage of 11.000mi . The bord computer still displayed 15% oil lifecycle remaining prior to the annual service. And that's the deal with each and every vehicle in Germany, nobody would ever go and have an oil change done after 5.000mi since that would be a waste of money and resources. Is this like a marketing strategy in the US, or is there a significant difference in between European and American engines?

Dillan, when you switch to synthetic from conventional,! Your engine will absorb some of the new syn. Oil into pockets of carbon that are left behind throughout the engine !!! so for the first 2 oil changes with synthetic oil, you will have to top off quite a bite so it's recommended that you purchase 2-3 extra quarts of syn. Oil and check the level every 1000 to 1500 miles till the the oil evaporation stops ' This is a common issue that is not talked about enough, It seems to accurrr more frequently with vehicles switching over when they are higher mileage,, good luck🍀☘🍀, Mechanic 36 years

Any car will run perfectly fine on conventional oil for 15k miles. The problem is over time the oil will work past the Piston rings, making you lose oil, therefore less oil in the engine, and loss of oil pressure. Oil lasts way longer than 3k miles on any vehicle, especially a V8 and oil darkness has literally Zero to do with the condition of the oil
@anonymike8280

Nevertheless, I change mine at 2500 miles (2.2L Toyota Camry). I am switching to semi next oil change and making the interval 3000 miles. Dino oil is getting hard to find and does not cost less either. All oil is semisynthetic, actually, because the carrier the additives come in is synthetic oil. No one ever damaged an engine because they changed the oil too soon. My driving is all short trips, and that qualifies as severe duty. For another thing, a low-end or no-name filter is good for about 5000 miles, no more. In my opinion, of course.

Love mine at least with the hemi. The 3.7 is very underpowered. They are reliable besides the ujoints on the drive shafts go bad and the water issue. You can fix that due to it being a water drain tube being disconnected or clogged. Very easy fix. Had the issue in both of my commanders.

TheNinja95 We had the 3.7 (yes very under powered) It would constantly spit rocker arms off if it was really cold. The 4.7 and 3.7 are VERY notorious for this. Last time a rocker came off it get wedged in the timing chain and broke a bunch of stuff. I ended up putting new heads and timing components on it then sold it. The water issue I agree most of the time it’s the sunroof drains. I actually replaced them blue shitty drain hose with bigger clear hose. The water was coming in the the door seal somehow. Literally everything started happening soon after the warranty ran out. We loved the Commander at first but quickly lost interest. For what it’s worth I’m glade you’re happy with yours.

@@THETOPGLOCK I understand your issues and why you don't like it that sense with your issues. And was thinking about the hose mod for it but idk yet. Not a huge issue for me so I don't worry about it. And I had my fair amount of reasons to get pissed with my 3.7 but non we're for the motor in general beside it being too small for a Commander. But it could still put out some power when needed. Now my newer one with a hemi...shit that thing is just fun and has zero issues with the motor so far but the drive shafts like my other 3.7 are going bad but then again I can get new shocks and both front and read driveshafts for under 1000 and install myself in under a hour with ease. So it's not a big problem for me. And how many miles do ya have on your 3.7 I got 164879 on my 5.7

I switch between Fram, ACDelco, and the one next in line is Mobil 1. Luckily on my Malibu, the filter is right on top of the engine so it's easy peasy changing that, it's just having to get under the car to drain the oil, other than that, this car and engine is super easy to do. Great that you were teaching your little buddy how to do it. Changing engine oil really is one of the most basic things anyone should learn about a vehicle.

People never even bother to even check the oil. Then say oh that car was a piece of crap. Don't think to much about it, just change your oil. And change it more often then not. One more thing the C/T stands for compass and temperature.

Just change the oil after Christmas if you ever forget and you can't go wrong.Engines are complex so at least use semi-synthetic.Change 8k if under 100k,6k over 100k-200k and every 4k if over 300k....or get a new engine which ever is cheaper.$80-$100 for oil change done at home or $5.000-$8.000 for and engine?

My sister drove her new 1983 Camero for 50,000 miles and 5+ years without changing motor oil. The oil looked like mud water when finally got changed. But, the car kept soldier on for years. Older cars are better made cars. Steel engine blocks are better than modern aluminum.

I'm thinking of switching to more expensive synthetic oil and extended filter though I've only used conventional oil / filter my whole life . Is it really that good ? very safe I can run it for a lot longer before oil needs another one ?

Penzzoil (also under shell company?) and Shell Helix Ultra are the best engine oils to use and they are reasonably priced n affordable. Oil is stable, smooth n quiet (hard driving) even after 8k km it felt like a new oil , , think can push to 15k km ( change yearly ) for those healthy engines. Worth every single cent.

Maintaining a car or thinking about having to maintain a car are not a strong point in a females brain. ( my mother blew up one of my dads cars the same way years ago!) Its a good thing your teaching your little brother how to do it, he will be doing it all by him self by the time he is about 14.

Higher oil capacity does help you squeeze out more miles per oil change. My old '88 DeVille (friend totaled it after dropping me at the airport two years ago) held six quarts and the oil always looked pretty decent after the old school 3K miles change intervals.

I have a 2001 supercharged Nissan frontier. Because they shoehorned that supercharger in there, the oil pan is very small.... The V6 supercharged engine holds the same amount of oil as my 24HP riding mower... 3 quarts! I have to change the oil every 2500 miles or less as it gets nasty very quickly.

Just because the oil is dark doesn't mean it's bad. Especially if it's synthetic oil or if you car is direct injection. I've seen cars with direct injection have the oil go black after 100 miles. An oil analysis will show it's fine, it just goes to show that the oil is doing it's job and keeping deposits in suspension

I just wanted to say that you are a great big brother and you two are good sons by helping Ol Mom out. I'm 48 years old and have been using the orange Fram filters for years. While I'm SURE everyone is correct about them being cheap, if one follows a 3 to 5k mile interval, I don't have a problem with them. Needed valve cover gaskets on my 99 5.7 Pontiac and found the top end clean as a whistle at 130,000 miles. May want to do another change a few months down the road to get the last of the dirt from the old oil out. Great job guys!
