Admit you've never read a She-Hulk comic. Because honestly this was spot on. See you lot fail to understand that She-Hulk does the fighting bit in her comics but the story is never really about the fighting. She-Hulk is self-aware she knows she is in a comic and often uses those comics as evidence in her trials. She was self-aware and using the fourth wall LONG before Deadpool was a thing, even in his comics he has pointed out that he just copied her but the MRA who read his comics would never read a female lead comic so they think he did it first. Yeah thats a literal fucking thing. So Jen actually busting out and confronting the bad writing and the tired tropes and overused plot lines is 100% accurate to the source material because fans have been complaining about the tired trope of the hero having to fight the bad guy who has the exact same powers of the hero for YEARS, Having Hulk show up outta no where to save Jen would be stupid too because it would make her look weak in her own show. You also miss this is not a superhero show, its a sitcom with a superhero character. BIG difference.

I find it funny that the finale was basically the writers calling out their lackluster writing. Being self-aware about your writing problems does not excuse those writing problems. Like what Joe said, if there is ever a second season (which I pray I hope doesn't happen), they need better writers and directors. Let's hope this means there's better writing from Phase 5 onwards.

I think what made the last episode so bad was that the 4th wall break ultimately absolved her of learning any lessons or developing as a character at all. Bruce tries to reach her balance and calming techniques in the first episode only to have her invalidate his experiences as her own are SO much more significant. She then goes on a hulk rampage in the previous episode and instead of suffering for her actions, learning from her mistakes and growing as a person, she just 4th wall breaks herself into a win
@Orokovet
@Orokovet 2 жыл бұрын
that doesn't make any sense. the entire point of the 4th wall break was a visual representation of jumping the hurtle of her character arc that she's been too stubborn to do the whole show. Usually in the comics She-hulks main villain or conflict is the story being told, having her always have to physically talk to the creators of character or the writer of the comic themselves disputing with logistics at the source of the problem what needs to be resolved. her fighting away all of the physical bad guys in the scene would've been a complete waste of the episode considering that her biggest strength has always been omnipotence and perception of self.

EXACTLY!! I'd say that most of this show is just fighting itself over what it's identity actually is. I think at the beginning they planned it out as a classic law show with some super hero hijinks sprinkled in, kind of like a family friendly Netflix Daredevil, but the show itself got mired between; future MCU plans and references, the meta-commentary and a feminist direction, just wrecked the show and made it confusing and ridiculously messy. I think Tatiana is a good pick for the character, but is constantly being held back by a ridiculous amount of B-plots, that the writers had no idea how to deal with. Disney knows people love Abomination, Wong and Daredevil but just throw them in as if they were checking items off a list. In an ideal world this show would've been a classic 2 hour super-hero movie, sum up the first episode in 20 minutes followed by Jen failing to have a normal life and ultimately fusing her Jen and she-hulk personas, just being a sassy fun lawyer while taking down bad guy's from time to time. This show has the same issue the Supergirl show has with Superman, where they're literally just riding the coat tails of their more iconic counterpart.
@rangerofalinos

Such a crap take. She lost her job, her ability to transform, had to move back in with her parents. Her hulk out in the last episode was controlled as hell, anyone who could have smashed that screen rather than have someone see their sextape would do so. There's also a hilarious irony that if she had smashed through a wall to detain a bad guy you'd praise the hulkness of it all. Where an out of control Hulk would have just straight up merced the dude last episode, she grabbed him, saw that the world around her was not condoning her actions and stopped. Like we saw Hulk attack Widow on the helicarrier when he lost it, and she probably only survived because of who she is and Thor intervening. She would have learnt nothing as a character if she just then beat up all the badguys after finding them at the end. It was always going to be pursuing it legally, which is why when she jumps the fourth wall the story changes. Fighting the characters would have actually been a terrible conclusion to that arc because It would reinforce the idea that hulk smashing the bad guys is the way to get things done. Which conveniently is the exact thing your ragging on her for having done. Because at one point she made a comment about how she controls her anger more than Bruce does. (That incident with Widow happened 5 years post transformation, where he hid from the world because he couldn't manage himself) If She-hulk had the anger problems of hulk, when attacked in the street those guys would be dead, when her car got ruined at Emil's she would have beat the crap out of them. And instead of getting angry about the big fight and beating everyone up and then turning them over to the cops afterwards she instead said "Wait this is stupid" and took a path that allowed her to play to Jen's strengths with She-Hulk providing muscle protection. You might not like it, but it did a far better job of letting Jen be Jen than any fight would have. (And if there wasn't a fight or event like this, you'd still be complaining)

The worst part about the finale is that with the 4th wall break you don't know what really happened after the changes. Did the guy turn into the Abomination? Did the guy steal She-Hulk's blood? Did She-Hulk get put in jail for assaulting people and getting the ankle monitor so she can't turn into She-Hulk? Did she violate the parole by turning into She-Hulk? I was sure they'd make Jen apologize to Bruce because he was right the whole time, she can't control her anger. I thought her whole arc would be she learns to accept her hulk powers and get a slice of humble pie, letting Bruce train her like she should have from the start. But no, in the end it was just, everything needs to revolve around her, even if she has to literally bend her reality for things to go her way.

@@supraaznpride By "revolve around her" I mean that everything has to be perfect for her, she doesn't have to apologize for anything or deal with the consequences of her actions. Everything bad that happens to her is framed as not her fault. Even in the end, they let her off the hook for destroying private property and putting a whole audience of people in danger just because the reason she got angry was justified. As if Bruce didn't get in severe trouble for getting angry for legitimate reasons. And it's not like they didn't know the reason she got angry was legitimate from the start. What changed? She caught the guy who triggered her anger, cool, so what? She still put people in danger. The world has to bend over to make her happy ending, she doesn't really learn anything, there is no arc other than her ending up liking her Hulk powers, but there's no growth beyond that.
@supraaznpride
@supraaznpride 2 жыл бұрын
@@tubguinace Well the tone of the show was a lighter one on purpose so of course the reactions to her hulking out ain't quite on the same level as the Norton hulk with him fighting against the military and destroying whole cities. Plus in this universe now, powerful beings are dime a dozen and half the population can die at anytime anyways. But it's mostly the tone of the show, which is sillier than any marvel stuff before it. If they were going for a dramatic action show sure they would've sent in the US army for her and she would've learned her lesson the blood and guts way. Jen's character felt more relatable as a reluctant hero all the way to the end. Should she have suffer a major lost and sacrafice at the end with an epic battle and really learn how to be a real hero just like the hulk? I mean if it was trying to do that, but I don't think they did so it then comes down to if you think the MCU is so sacred that it can't deviate from the formula at all. If you're on that camp then yeah She-Hulk is like what the f are they doing? But if you enjoy the fun silly stuff and relieved that after 20 years of the same-ish stuff they can take things not so seriously then there are little problems with the show itself. It's not perfect even in that regard, but if you try to watch the She-Hulk as if it were any other Marvel property you can find TONS of things that are wrong.

So intelligentsia thinks that everything was handed to Jen and that’s why they’re out to get her, but her and her friends are saying “No it’s not like that”. @@Mr.PR2000 a bit of a false equivalence to connect being an activitist in and of itself to being a bad writer. Captain America for example was basically an activist call by its writers for America to get up and punch Hitler in the face instead of staying neutral like they were at the time. Now people who try to shoehorn activist messages into their writing without proper meshing it into the story or characters and taking care to ensure that it actually work (on any side of the political spectrum or regarding any issue). Prioritizing the moral/product over everything else is what gets you shit like that one meme worthy Pepsi ad. All in all, it's completely possible to be an activist who goes to something like a climate rally or a pro-hong kong/Ukraine, Iranian people/whatever rally and still be a good writer. It's even possible to put activism into your stories and have it be good if you actually mix it in with the proper care and attention to detail. Unfortunately, alot of hack writers are the story telling equivalent of a baker who throws an egg into a bowl of flower, pours a cup of sugar on top, and expects you to Marvel over the 'cake' they've just created.

You just need to be genuine. Open your heart. That’s what makes it all click. Especially the forgiveness part. To be forgiven we must forgive. Our parents have generally loved us. This 4th wall break into the writers room joke could have worked, if it was in the 1st or 2nd episode, early in the season at the very least, especially if it did result in an uptick in the quality of the story. Like it would have been an incredible bait and switch. Get people setup for something, the character is like "Yeah no" goes and tells the writers to shape up or ship out, and boom we get something a bit more cohesive and fun, and not like... dunking on men and other things or that nature. Could even have had a recurring gag at the end of each episode where she is sitting in the writers room or something having a drink with them or with the 'actors' of the characters in her show.
@210rebelboy
@210rebelboy 2 жыл бұрын
It could've worked in the last episode if the rest of the season was really good, and the hodge podge of several storylines coming together in the end in a nonsensical way was entertaining and satisfying. It would work even better if Jen completed her growth by episode 8, so the hodge podge of storylines that would be resolved by a visit to the writers wouldn't appear to undermine that very growth. As of yet, it appears Jen hasn't had a significant arc, and some are saying the twist ending absolves her of having to grow or change at all. Instead, if by the end of the show Jen was more akin in personality to her comic book counterpart, the 4th wall break would've worked perfectly, because it would be in celebration of the source material rather than shitting on it to troll fans. It would be like "OK, the She-Hulk we all love is finally here." This is all my opinion of course, but I really think the idea isn't bad, it's the execution.

"The show itself has a message, but I don't think the message landed with this particular audience." She-Hulk tried so hard to say something that it ended up saying nothing. It's like when writing an essay your intro paragraph is meant to bring into focus the subject or theme you'll be discussing, so you state issues, concerns, and ideas. Then the thesis statement is written that binds all the issues together into a single, poignant point of address. She-Hulk spent its entire run time touching on issues, poking fun at them, and not taking itself too seriously (as I think part of the point in addressing toxicity?) that it ultimately never actually said anything about the themes it wanted to discuss. Shit just happens to characters, they react, and the episode cuts to credits. It wrote a bunch of fluff, but never made a point.
@magvad6472
@magvad6472 2 жыл бұрын
When you don't understand what was said because you are shut off to it...doesn't mean nothing was said. You'd have to be actually fuckin stupid to say the show didn't make a point. She Hulk gets put into a marvel plotting machine, the show symbolically positions what She Hulk represents as it pertains to the female leads relationship with rage and how society percieves feminine anger, and then from that position the finale unpacks how the Marvel machine is unable to pay off the themes of the show BECAUSE of the tropes within Marvel's traditional plot structure. And like EVERY fuckin Marvel property before it...the deep themes do not pay off because Marvel needs you to have a baddy to beat up and She Hulk stops it...and then says it's not about the villains, the incels and mysoginist commentators on the internet, it is about her and how society percieves her. It shouldn't be about THEM...but due to Marvel's trope structure it cannot resolve without being about them being wrong and not simply tell a story about She Hulk. The show is about how Marvel cannot present deep themes precisely because of its limited tools to tell stories. She Hulk as a CHARACTER has always been meta and why ANYONE would fuckin rage in such as childish way as Alex did is TELLING about how deeply unequipped schools are in giving children media literacy. But no, ya'll are too fueled with rage to even provide the patience to meet the show on its own terms...probably because ya'll have internalized mysoginy but are too fuckin stupid to even know what that is or how it manifests and be too busy making yourself the victim of feminism to see what you may be doing wrong in all this. But I'll just get raged at by 14 year old brain grown ass men who feel attacked and belittled and just somehow pivot how the show is just "dumb" but conveniently lack the tools to enumerate why other than subjective baseless value framing. The shit take machine of the internet keeps on turning and even when the show POINTS IT OUT ya'll just literally prove the show right.

@zenmindgamer 2 жыл бұрын
@@magvad6472 Honestly, I think you totally didn't understand the essay analogy. I didn't say there are no themes in "She-Hulk"; the themes that are there simply go nowhere. So this will be my last long-form reply unless you have something intelligible to say, like what themes you thought were complex and thoroughly explored. Overall, I'd say "She-Hulk" is about self-agency. There's not an episode that goes by where people aren't restricting Jen because of who she is, what she is, and what her career is, and she gets shoehorned into a lot of roles that are beyond her choice: she's turned into a Hulk by accident, she's fired from her job for doing the right thing and unceremoniously put in charge of what's essentially a freak-show department at her new firm, and she's constantly undercut by guys in her sex life who are into She-Hulk but not Jen. The first episode sets up this conflict of recognizing agency when Bruce tells Jen that she'll need to be responsible for her anger, to which she blows up that she, and women like her, are already masters of their anger because they need to measure their interactions on a daily basis. The show had an excellent theme established right there that could have been explored as Jen not having that level of agency she believed she already did. There's a lot going on that tries to challenge her agency throughout the season, but then doesn't follow-up with any consequences with those sequences that challenge her. At her friend's wedding Jen is told not to transform into She-Hulk because it will ruin the bride's day, the bride herself is an absolute monster whose toxic behavior causes employees to quit so she dumps clean-up duty onto Jen, further attacking Jen's agency. When Jen finally does transform Jen doesn't call out her friend's toxic behavior and there's no penalty on her friend's behavior - if anything she's rewarded as she gets to claim being buddies with She-Hulk. Then we have Jen undercutting her own agency and lamenting about it. If "She-Hulk" is about self-expression and self-agency then those themes are undercut by Jen's dating life. Jen constantly complains that she can't get a man to be committed to her, though advertises her profile like an easy sale for a one-night stand. If "She-Hulk" truly wanted to say something groundbreaking they could have let her be a horny player, but acting like one and chasing after men for a sense of fulfillment directly contradicts her self-agency that the show is trying to establish. There is absolutely nothing wrong about a woman who enjoys playing the field, but don't double-back on that behavior by having the main character act shocked she can't find a guy who wants to commit to her. Unironically, my favorite episode is actually the therapy retreat. This is the closest Jen gets to realizing that she's been letting other people control her agency and undercut her sense of authority over her life and desires. It's honestly a great episode for anybody who does get hung-up on people easily that they need to remember that we aren't defined by the people in our lives, but that they are companions. I honestly didn't expect Emil Blonsky/Abomination to have genuinely insightful wisdom. This episode is the closest that "She-Hulk" gets to stating a thesis statement that ties together the rest of Jen's experiences thus far. However, this is undercut in the finale, and Emil Blonsky himself no less, when Emil is acting as a motivational speaker to an incel group. Abomination, the dude whose entire message is about taking responsibility for one's actions and not letting the world project or define your role in it, is whipping up these incels to recognize their problems stem externally and to rectify that. Jen's own development arc is thrown out the window as she defaults to the know-it-all attitude she showed with Bruce in episode one as she confronts K.E.V.I.N. What we do agree on is that if the finale had resulted in a massive battle it would have played exactly against the themes, because it's forcing Jen to act as a fighter, however even this would have been a better ending because we see Jen clearly distraught that she's no longer allowed to become She-Hulk so this is a statement of her choosing that power, choosing that agency. As the lawyer I genuinely wanted Jen to take Intelligencia down the legal route, but all that is thrown out by a lowering of the curtain and a new set reveal. Jen goes on having gotten her way in every single thread the finale setup, but without actually having done the work to make it so. One can say that happened behind the scenes when Marvel fixed the show's conclusion, which I get is the meta of the 4th wall, but to have so sloppily handled the context of the theme up to this point "She-Hulk" could have benefitted from an episode with some actual sleuthing.

The mark of a bad writer? Saying the quote, "But it'll be unexpected and subvert the audience's expectations!" 😁👍 The minute I heard one of the writers say that during that writer's room scene, I was like, "Yeah...that explains it all." Let me tell you right now, if you want to be a writer, that is the WORST advice to follow. Subverting expectations doesn't mean be random! And that is EXACTLY what this show was as a whole. RANDOM. Things happen, just because! Nothing connects! Nothing was achieved! Almost none of the characters are likeable! And nobody, and I mean NOBODY, NOT A SINGLE CHARACTER had an ARC! No one grew! No one learned anything! Much less the show's lead. Worse still, there's a line where Jen states that things like plot don't matter, only story does (in this case Jen's story and growth). That is NOT TRUE! Where did whoever wrote this go to school?! You CANNOT have story without a plot! You need both otherwise the story doesn't work! It's like saying that the human body can live with only a heart but no brain or a brain but no heart. You NEED both there to function! What's even dumber too, is that Jen says this but neither she nor others have a story because no one has an arc. Jen doesn't have an arc, she's the same person she was when the show started. Okay, does she at least influence everyone else leading to a change in others? You know, akin to say Goku from Dragon Ball where he doesn't change, but he causes a positive change in others or like Paddington bear, where he positively influences others around him as well. Nope! Pug, Nikki, Bruce, Daredevil, Ms. Book (the other lawyer lady), Titania, Emil, Wong, hell the writers even, does anyone in Jen's circle change or grow as people? NO! They're all the same character they were when the show started. (Okay, Pug sort of changed, but not because of Jen or anything, I guess they just changed him willy nilly as they needed him). No, forget the man hating stuff (that stuff was expected out of this show). This show is simply awful because it's horribly written. How these talentless, unclever, uncreative hacks managed to get work is beyond me!
@kotlolish

Agreed subverting expectations is not a terrible thing in reality if done well. But subvert for subverting sakes is bad. it's like putting in a plot twist for plot twist sakes.(Hey Shamalan) If you want to put in a twist or subversion you gotta either put in SUBTLE HINTS or such things. It takes alot of talent to pull that off... I just notice when I talk writing and I put in a simple twist, people love it and I am like: "No it's simple.. it needs more work" Then when I make a huge lore or twist appear with a whole story...it's like "neat" When I feel something is wrong and I ask for critism or things.. I don't get it.. I hear: "I love it don't touch it" while I feel something is wrong with it. If this is what happens in writing in general... no wonder we get terrible writers... and no wonder people don't critize anymore.

A subversion of expectations only works when the new thing is BETTER than what you expected. For example: "Anime protagonist has a training montage, forms a team of heroes, does his kickass character-defining attack... And dies to the starter villain in episode one. The story is about everyone in the group learning to continue the fight." That kind of story COULD work somehow. Is the new thing funnier? More action-packed? Does it deal a strong emotional punch that matters for the rest of the story?
@TheLastSane1

@TheLastSane1
@TheLastSane1 2 жыл бұрын
@@speeddevil4040 and his examples have nothing to do with this case. The whole point was that people expected the same ending to all their shows and the subversion was that they went the other way and of course that it actually fit better with the show. She Hulk is not an action show so it having an action ending wouldn’t make sense. They subverted the trope by doing what a normal show would do without the marvel formula
@speeddevil4040
@speeddevil4040 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheLastSane1 The part where he mentions action packed is in refrence to his previous example of a show with the protag dying at the start His examples are to do with subverting expectations and the fact that they should ADD something to the show. This adds nothing; you know what would have added something? A court room scene with she-hulk taking hulking and the other incels to court. All of that was skipped over; the forth wall break doesn't make sense here because she-hulk talking to the audience every once in a while isn't the same thing as literally walking into the writers room and changing the script before the story is over. Especially for the season finale. If this was a one off episode i wouldn't have minded it as much. It's crazy how fucking deadpool had more restraint. Their's was a gag skit during the end credits of the movie after the story had concluded. The problem isn't that there was no big fight; the problem was they skipped over the resolution. Hulking got sent to prison...how? They rewrote him hulking out so there was no fight so he couldn't have gone to prison for that. Was it for doxing her? if so how did she prove it to the police so he would get sent to prison? All of it is skipped over. Her being unable to use her powers due to being on probation? Doesn't matter. Rewritten The problem is that they wrote a bunch of plot threads and then just dropped them or skipped over the resolution. Yes we are tired of 50 different plot threads in every marvel show. However the solution to that isn't to start 100 plot threads and then just finish 2. The solution is just to make 2 plot threads to begin with. If you are gonna do the former you're just wasting my time. That's like me complaining that the food at a restaurant is bad because there undercooked with way to much seasoning. Then their answer is to surve me the same undercooked overseasoned dish and while it is at my table scrape off the seasoning with their fingernails and torch it with a flamethrower. Yes that technically fixed the problem but you just created a whole new one instead of just never making the original mistake in the first place.

I'm convinced this show was made by people who neither know nor care for SheHulk, but saw her as a convenient vehicle to start a war with "toxic fandom" by deliberately taunting them to elicit a response so the writers can belittle them from the gilded soapbox of a billion dollar franchise, thus becoming the very thing the "toxic" fans accuses them of being. Now the writers can say that was meta commentary to reflect modern fandom but stooping down to the level of the people you despise doesn't make you clever, it makes you a hypocrite, which explains why Jen herself acts so hypocritical. This is such a shame since the premise of the show held so much potential to explore the moral and legal side of superhero-ing with all of the heroes with their own story to tell, and workplace politics is a comedy goldmine. Utterly squandered.

Like we all know you people don't see women as human being, to you lot they are property to be abused, controlled, and made to breed. But to every other person with hint of intelligence we know women are people and that that is a complete and utter fucking insane thing to compare. Lets put it this way, if tomorrow someone released Joe's girlfriends "Sex tape" with an ex or even with joe, all of her personal records, and stole her blood. Think Joe or his gf would have a good time? Think they would be happy? Because I don't think they would be.

I’ll admit, part of me is still not over the “infinitely more angry than you” statement from episode one, considering it was said to who it was and how the Hulk was created , me personally being repeatedly abused from a parent while your a child is way worse than being catcalled but I’m a man with CPSTD so what do I know… BUT also I’m not the type of person that knee jerk reacts to things that don’t really matter, so I kept giving the show a chance thru the season, even though it wasn’t really hooking me, even the DareDevil cameo felt off to me… but oof this series wasn’t very good. I’d say it was better than Ms Marvel(and no I didn’t hate that either just wasn’t entertaining enough for me to want to see again), but also outside of Fire&Blood I unfortunately can’t say any other current series was better - which is a sad sad thing to say. The sentiment of it had good bones but they couldn’t put it together is a perfect way to say what went wrong, I’d only say add in the fact that the writers came off like they made a preemptive strike on pathetic man-babies that were going to say what they said no matter how the show actually turned out, their ONLY focus, and didn’t care if they let the character or story suffer for it.
