Ironically Wentz's head was his biggest enemy for sure. He either overthought or obsessed over every bump in the road. He was great at mastering the playbook and interpreting coverages but when something went wrong he couldn't just use it for fuel & move forward. Luck is a great contrast - he was a super smart QB, too, but was also gifted at keeping his head straight when things are went wrong. Night & day....

Actually, you were off a bit on some of it. Not only did Wentz refuse to work with Pederson, but the Birds fired Pederson to placate Wentz. Then even after that, Wentz demanded a trade from the Birds. It was at that point he lost any fans that still had any love for him. He just handled things so poorly.

Pederson publicly stabbed Carson in the back, several months after Howie stabbed him in the back. Once he was benched, his time in Philly was over...there was no coming back when it is obvious your front office doesn't want you. Doug being fired had nothing to do with Carson, it had to do with Doug wanting more power in the organization and Laurie/Howie wanting it all to themselves. Doug basically fired himself because they wouldn't give him any say in the organization despite earning more than they wanted him to have. Basically, Howie tanked a Superbowl roster and the easy targets for him to save his job were Carson and Doug and he whacked them both. You're just a typical, gullible Philly fan.

This is an incredible long spanning retrospective, but you missed something, which I as an Eagles fan will not forget. Before they traded Wentz, the Eagles fired Doug Pederson, to seemingly try to placate Wentz and keep him here. Even when they were willing to destroy their coaching staff for the guy, he opted to move on.

Later on Doug was seen in camp with Wentz after that as if Doug was never the issue. It was reported the issue was the front office. Because in 2020 the Eagles drafted another QB in the second round even though their need was WR pretty bad. And even drafting a WR the round before they did a very bad selection at it which seen most of the NFL laughing at them. Reports were Wentz felt they were not doing enough to support him with weapons. It was just 2019 when Wentz set the Eagles passing season record with no true number 1 WR. That year most of the WRs were injured and Ertz was the leading catcher! Then in 2020 injuries killed them on offense leaving only Wentz and Kelce healthy all of that year. But in the end the team seemed to blame Wentz. With time by a good Oline and scrub WRs we seen Wentz set a passing yards record for a season. Now the team with no healthy Oline nor WRs wants to give all the blame to Wentz which was not fair. Any decent QB would want out. But Colts were no better. There Oline in 2021 ranked 3rd last in pass protection. The commanders were just as bad ranking bottom in pass protection as well. The only reason Wentz backup did better in games is because he scrambled to make plays happen but coaches were trying to stop Wentz from doing that since he was injured a lot early in his career.

Having post 2017 Wentz as your QB was an unbelievable ride. He was capable of the best plays you've ever seen, just to follow them up with the most boneheaded mistake no rookie would ever make. When Howie drafted Hurts I was beyond confused back then, but his demeanor being the polar opposite to Wentz' meant that the entire team wanted him to start immediately. Especially the O-Line, who hated Wentz for taking tons of sacks for no good reason, loved Hurts from day 1 and were pushing for him hard. I'm happy every day that Howie drafted Hurts, who by now can do everything Wentz ever could but better. In the end Wentz has (or maybe had) everything to be one of the best QBs in the league, but his ego ruined everything.

Wentz grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota, played for NDSU in Fargo, North Dakota. His entire life he was the big fish in a little pond and was treated accordingly. Making it to the NFL makes him an elite athlete, but think of the competition he faced growing up in North Dakota. How easy it was for him to dominate through sheer talent because he really had very few peers. How much adversity did he ever face competing against kids in high school who would be mediocre DII players? At NDSU he played against teams that were lucky to have a single NFL draft pick on their rosters. Growing up with that obviously gave him an inflated sense of entitlement. Because he never developed a sense of humility, because he could always win games all by himself, it is no wonder he kept playing hero ball in the NFL. He has the talent but not the right emotion...humility.

When the media has a narrative on you, it's tedious to contextualize everything. Carson is still my favorite player (Eagles fan for 22 years), because without him, Foles would never have the chance to play in SB. It took both of them to win that year. The people who want to discredit Wentz as a significant contributor are dishonest. In that case Marc-Andre Fleury in NHL should give back 2 of his 3 rings since he didnt play in Stanley Cup final, Murray was the goalie for both wins. Yet he's considered a 3 time Stanley Cup winner. It's a team game! Now if Wentz was like Nate Sudfeld and didnt play basically, it would be a different story. But Wentz was arguably the best player in the NFL that year and the main reason they had BYE and homefield advantage. Now that alone doesnt guarantee a SB but what it does do, is put them in best position to win SB. Wentz never really had NFL playoff experience, and Foles never finished a full season in his career. Foles also went 10 quarters without a TD that SB year, had worst QBR in NFL then arguably played best back to back playoff games ever. Pats defense got shredded with Foles who was a stationary QB. Wentz was a dual threat that year, before his injury he was HIM. I think the pressure of trying to win SB all on his own after that, and the Clowney dirty hit put too much pressure and he didn't have the mental fortitude to overcome it. Whatever one thinks of his personality, fans need to be grateful for his contributions to the SB year as he was the catalyst that put them in the best position to win! The shrine for Foles was also there because everyone knew that Foles needed more confidence especially the way reg season ended, and his Falcons game was awful. Foles was never really consistent (Apart from 2013 when he had Prime Djack and prime Shady). He needed all the help he could and the shrine made him believe that his teammates believed in him. I think that helped his confidence. I love Foles and I am grateful for both Wentz and Foles that year. Without one of them, we dont win. I still believe pre-torn ACL he would have shredded Pats defense, but we will never know. What we do know is that we won Superbowl with both of their contributions. There's a reason why Eagles became underdogs after Wentz went down. In 2017 Wentz had: #1 QBR in NFL #3 EPA #1 PPG with him at helm #1 3rd/4th down conversion #1 tight window throw 23-0 in RZ (Currently in 2024 has one of the best RZ TD/INT ratio in NFL history 110 TD 6 INT). 33 TDs in 13 games 11-2 record Pro Bowl All pro Won 2017 NFL POTY (Bert Bell) award as not only the best QB but the best player. Whilst Hurts has had the most stacked team of any Eagles QB. All Pro receivers etc. Wentz really just had 2 bad seasons since 2016. His last year with Eagles in 2020 (Where team was also decimated with injuries/lack of talent) and in 2022 with Washington. He had a great game with Rams vs 49ers (3 TDs, converted 2 4th downs) both teams didnt play whole roster and some top players for both teams played like half the game. But mentally had he folded, his career would be over. He played like his career was on the line and it was. They needed to win so that Stafford could play against his former team the Lions. Chiefs also got Wentz to do QB sneaks because they dont want to risk Mahomes getting hurt again doing it. Wentz since 2016 has had the most successful rate in QB sneaks until the Eagles "Tush push" came along. I really want KC to reach SB and Carson to have a QB sneak TD! I think it will be very emotional for him and a good comeback/feel good story. One thing we can never question about Carson, is that he put everything on the line body wise. He plays hard, one of the toughest players physically. I think anyone's mental game (Apart from Brady, Mahomes and few others) would have trouble overcoming the injuries he's had, pressure in Philly, seeing another QB win the SB while you did the heavy lifting to get them there. I know I wouldn't be able to.

What a great video! As an Eagles fan Carson will always have a special place in my heart. He didnt bring home the Lombardi but we dont get there with out him. The injuries and Foles success were the big thing cause Philly loooooved Foles. Even before the Superbowl. Bradford was only on the team cause we trade Foles away and fans hated that. So it really messed with Carson's head when people wanted Foles to be the starter over him. Then the Eagles didnt put a team around him and that hurt his play. But his 2019 season was really more impressive, with the WR core he had, then his 2017 almost MVP season.

I've seen a few of these, "What happened to carson" videos and this is by the far the best one. Both is substance and form and providing your own insights and commentary throughout. I have another theory, even more simple which you didn't touch on. (Life long Eagle fan by the way, and appreciate you giving props when Elliot beat your team. Respect! ;). For me, it was all in Carson's head: Yes, he was legit injured on the run to the SB, but I couldn't imagine seeing a statue of my back up. From that moment where the city had annoited Foles and Doug to immortal status, it was over. The merciful thing for the Eagles and Carson to do was to trade him immediately. Because from a mental point of view, there is no way to live in Foles shadow, let alone his statue, and while Foles is still there! It was too much for anyone, let alone Carson who then just couldn't handle it. His other injuries, caused by his style of play, etc contributed, but my advice would have been: Leave Philly, never come back, and do your best somewhere else. Anyhow: great video, look forward to watching more!

Playing a season with the Chiefs will bring Carson back down to earth. Hopefully. He will witness true talent AND humility with Mahomes, learn what locker room leadership means watching Chris, Patrick and Travis, He will see the work ethic practice mentality in Travis, and hopefully the off field prep work by Mahomes. He will see how all of the players genuinely support one another and are HAPPY for one another, even if it means they personally are out-shown or even cut from the team due to another teammates superior performance. They come everyday to compete and do their best, and when they fall short, the congratulate the other competitors for their superior performance, then go home and work even harder. Do you even know where it is? I'll give you insight because I know where it is. It's at the north entrance to the stadium. For him to see it every day, he'd have to go to turn the other direction on Broad (Novacare complex is on west side, stadium on east), park and walk through closed parking lots, and open a locked gate because you can't see it. Giving credibility to anonymous sources is irresponsible as it isn’t confirmed whether such statements were made from any player. For all you know it could be the same source who leaked the DeSean Jackson gang affiliation rumors. Carson’s receivers were weak because to Howie Roseman made them that way. Carson broke an NFL record with a terrible receiving core and instead of rewarding him that clown decided to forgo on CeeDee Lamb as trading the second pick to move up meant he couldn’t draft Hurts. He then decided it was a good idea to go on national television and likening drafting Hurts to a time where he decided against drafting Russell Wilson. That distasteful and disrespectful act from a GM would alarm ANY QB especially given that the QB mentioned played for team who hit your starting QB with a cheap shot. Yet Wentz never said ANY thing foul about him even though he wouldn’t have been lying in the slightest. You don’t draft a backup and liken him to Russell Wilson PUBLICLY because you don’t draft a Russell Wilson to back up anybody. That move was a head scratcher for everyone that year. You don’t draft a back up that high with veterans in the FA pool who could AT LEAST serve as a mentor. In week 17 vs the Raiders, Carson left the field with the LEAD before the last ranking 4th Q Colts defense let Derek Carr carve them up with a kick to end regulation. I had season tickets and watched QB after QB take the lead with next to triple zeros on regulation. The Colts have notoriously had issues in Jacksonville. The Colts being one game away in a weird 17 week COVID season ABSENT training camp was very good. Carson Wentz had a passer rating of 94.6 with 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in 17 games in Indy. (not mentioned) Jim Irsay didn’t like him and unless he went 13-3 nothing was keeping him around. The talk about leadership in Indy is absolute bullshit. Leonard, Taylor, Kelly, and Pittman were all upset he was leaving. Frank wanted him and the GM and owner didn’t it’s as plain as that. As someone who personally knows Carson and has talked about everything from Philly to Indy to his foundation to 94WIP dude is a class act. What people don’t like about him is that his confidence doesn’t come from what people think about him so he doesn’t go out of his way to MAKE people like him. He has real social issues. He grew up in rural North Dakota and then went to college in rural North Dakota. So he saw NO diversity for the first 20 years of his life. Then he ends up in the NFL (dominated by African Americans) huge culture shock. On top of that, he ends up in Philly (A huge city with almost 50% African American pop). I am not saying he is a racist. I doubt that, but he was really uncomfortable around black people and that's not good in this league. This was an issue on the team as he only had a relationship with several white players and that's about it. Zach Ertz set the all time signal season reception record because he tossed the ball to him even in coverage (don't get me wrong Zach was a beast). But that became a problem to the rest of the team.
