The low level indicator is known as the dipstick. It is manual and involves opening the hood and pulling out the dipstick ... Wiping off the oil and reinserting. Pull it out again and read the level and ta da you know the oil level in your engine. I understand the five minutes it takes to do this but how much does a new engine cost?

Great video, Ford covered it in the literature. I think it's all about oil vapors, that's why the type of driving effects it. This is why extremely high performance engines run dry sump systems with multiple pick ups and a huge reservoir. This is simply what happens when you make race cars available to the public. Yes oil level is critical, don't learn the hard way.

I have a 2019 Nissan 370Z sport coupe 6M with about 14K miles on it. During the first 1500 miles I kept the revs below 3500, accelerated gently and varied engine speed as I drove. I also did an early oil change at 500 miles and another early oil change at about 1500 miles before going to a normal 3K mile oil change interval. The result: the engine runs like a finely made swiss watch with virtually no noise and is currently using oil at the rate of about 1 quart per 10K miles. I also sweep the bottom of the oil pan with a telescoping magnet when I do oil changes to try to remove as much of the iron and steel wear particles that have accumulated there.

The 12-13 Boss 302 has an amazing engine and sound too! Love the Gt 350 but also love my Boss. As a result I loose some oil as well and have to replace about 1/2 quart roughly ever 2 to 3 months and it’s daily driven. Running a better oil will solve the consumption issue. If you track the car. Use either pennzoil platinum full synthetic or royal purple full synthetic oil both oils don’t burn off as quickly as other brands and the both have the best wear protection on the market. They don’t consume the oil because it’s a flat plane crank! If your going to make a video about a specific issue then you should actually have some of the facts. These consumption issue is due to the lack of tension the pistons rings have in the cylinders. I believe ford has changed the part number on upcoming motors , so they may have the issue resolved. Time will tell. Ford probably should of done something a little different to begin with though. This day and age a car shouldn’t need its oil checked every time it needs fuel. High performance motor or not. My GT350 uses oil but not to the point I’m going to worry about it.

Richard Mountford Correct. But there have been many reported issues from owners that their cars have used 2 -3 quarts of oil per 500 miles. Ford has been replacing these engines and know that this is a reoccurring problem. interesting... but false info. I checked my oil at every fillup, and it started not using oil, but by 5500 miles it started using up to 1 quart every 120 miles. Ford replaced the motor in February 2019 the cause was "excessive oil consumption" currently the new motor is not using oil. the issues seemed to show up worse in the MY 2017 cars more that others. the bore scope pictures on my 2017 GT350 showed cylinder wall damage in #1, #2 and #3, #2 showed Ring failure and glazed cylinder walls. To correct the guys Video, it comes down to break in procedure.. read the manual on break in and follow it. for the first few hundred miles, do not let it idle for extended periods, do not use cruise control, vary the RPMS, don't baby it but don't hit redline until a few hundred miles.

I believe the harmonics of the engine strain the internal components more overtime than an equivalently sized crossplane engine (like the 5.0 or 5.2 supercharged). Ford had to change the oil filter design from a spin on, to a cartridge design, because the engine shook the spin on design loose. I wouldn't be surprised if the new GT500 proved to be more reliable.

Greg Williams Well you’re going to have high heat and wear when you run it at higher rpm than not. All vehicle’s will do this under the condition he is driving. The oil goes away because of the heat and that turns it into a vapor which goes by the rings or elsewhere in the engine. The heat is the killer of a engine and it doesn’t matter what you want to say about it shouldn’t be using that much oil. JMO

Every powerful engine I've ever had used oil. What will help is a dropped oil pan so your crank is not whipping it up into the bottom of the cylinders and flooding the rings.....I'm saying this unless the Shelby uses a dry sump (which would be a lot better for everything, especially track use) and would better serve the engine at high rpm's. Even then, certain tolerances in this engine will have to be opened up, due to the heat it will experience and the rpm's it operates at.... If it has forged pistons, like the engines I have built, the top end will generally be set up looser due to more expansion of the forged pistons.

I know this has been said already but crank causing oil loss? Where do you think the oil goes? Loose bearings it'll still just run back into the pan... Large ring gap is most likely the cause, which is odd because hellcats and zl1s use oil but they run larger gapped rings for the boost. More boost/nitrous you run the more ring gap. But the gt350 being n.a. shouldn't be gapped so much. But nice car though and cool to see you actually drive it like it's meant to be

Period! Ever! Furthermore, I would build for a particular rpm redline and derate that by a thousand rpms as a safety factor. This engine is clearly overrated and the owners can't seem to recognize it. IMO, 450-500 hp in a street car is way more than enough and anymore is insanity. I'm beyond all that stuff these days. I have a supercharged gt350. Built originally by Hennessey - has the HPE 850 package. But worked and tuned by DBR High Perf and Lund Perf. Mine consumes oil. Had a discussion about that with some folks and thought maybe it had to do with the blower. Maybe partly, but it’s that high rev. The oil, so I’ve heard (no expert here) gets by the rings because unless you are shifting at a high RPM consistently, the rings aren’t necessarily sealing. Even regular track use, you still street drive it and I assume most of use hear the absolute screaming and short shift. I do. I know I do. And I consume oil. I know that too. So I check my oil....ALL THE TIME.

I love these cars and yes it’s kept me from buying one. I have a E93 M3 V8 revs to 8400. Burns NO oil. I have lots of other cars they burn no oil. I have a V8 panamera Turbo it burns a little bit if driven very hard. But it’s 130k miles. Love the GT350 and might go for it. I believe it the best mustang ever made and probably ever will be made. Cheers boys.

A 10 minute video about the need to check your oil is something I'd expect from a mustang owner. Like you needed to devote that much time to this as if it's some sort of eye opener. Didn't put the oil filter on tightly enough? Really? Couldn't manage that 20 ft-lbs, huh? Gotta look out for that one lol. Fuck's sake. I see a mustang and think clown immediately. This is part of the reason why.

This is one of the reasons I sold my Shelby GT350. I went on a long tour/rally of Switzerland and Austria in mine (2k miles total). I brought along 5 quarts of oil. I drove the piss out of the car all through the Alps. Mine consumed all 5 quarts 3/4 through the event and I still needed to finish and get home. Luckily some of the guys on the rally gave me a few quarts so I was saved. Still after that I was pissed at the car and sold it. Now I heard Ford will replace the engine if its consuming as much oil as mine was. Thats ok I wouldn't want it without the original engine anyway.

Ford manual, for the factory recommendation, on the 5 liter - the recommendation is and has been 5W - 20... for standard passenger car use. This does not cover uses in dusty, high stress, high heat or racing applications. If you are regularly going to stress your 5.0, common sense suggests that you make 'other' choices. Stress can 'reasonably' be assumed if you are running an after market supercharger, blower; matter of fact - if you install any of the popular superchargers - they commonly recommend / require that you need to use 5w - 50 (synthetic) oil.... due to the higher heat caused by extra power as well as 100 lbs power adder siting on top of the intake.

Regardless of how long the oil has been in your car, you should change it. Being that the engine is in break-in mode. 550 miles is enough for the first oil change. Flush out any of those break-in particles. Examine the used oil and look for metallic flakes. Also, a lot of people are recommending Amsoil. Saying it helps with oil consumption.

Mustang Scott76 you could check with your local parts store. Or get the filter online. Late model restoration sells um. It’s my understanding that pre 02/17 models use spin on element FL-2069-ST. Post 02/17 cars use the cartridge style unit FL-2062. Maybe just open your oil filter access door and confirm b4 you purchase.

You guys really believe this crap? obviously there's a ring/piston issue, or could possibly even be valve issues not sealing oil properly, but I think it's a poor piston ring design and 8250 rpm has nothing to do with oil consumption. 4 stroke dirt bikes rev from 11 000 rpm to 14 000 rpm and don't consume oils, street bike revs over 14 000 rpm and they don't consume oil. my procharge 3v gt revs 7800 rpm makes 771 whp and doesn't consume oil. I really wanted to to buy a gt350 next year..... but I guess I'll pass. Now is this harmful for the engine having high oil consumption. Yes and no, if there's too much it will gum up valves, start fouling plugs and eventually might result in low compression and excessive blow by, but it doesn't mean the engine will blow up in thousand pieces, but it means in a few more KM the engine needs to come out and you will need to replace or pay someone to replace all piston rings, and hone the cylinders. to get the engine to seal properly again and so far looking at all the excessive oil consumption problems, they happen around 30 000 to 50 000 miles so every 2 - 3 years. that is pretty sad. Only thing that might get me to buy this car is if an aftermarket company makes aftermarket piston and rings that have a better seal then OEM. Good luck on your top end rebuild. it is coming
