Sheldon Lathe 1940's ?? new to me... look around..and advice requested

Hello Here is my newly acquired Lathe Its a Sheldon apparently mid 1940's vintage 10" swing 56" bed length, fair condition I have only given it a "oily rag" clean up.
It has been stored in a pretty dry shed kept covered and well oiled for quite a few years I paid Only £100 ($125) a ripping bargain! the previous owner wanted see it to get used....
Any information or advice gratefully received

I have that same lathe, except mine came off of a US navy ship. Great lathe!

Hello Mr Ron...... I've started to use mine a bit in the last year I've fitted the motor and a flea bay inverter drive to ...be fair the drive is OK for a cheap Chinese Unit it runs the 3 phase motor very smoothly.....time I think I should shoot an update....mine came out of an elderly ladies shed!!

i have the same exact lathe...its great and accurate little machine :) btw its 11x56" sheldon lathe..ex military truck lathe.

Thanks for the reply...so I was right about the military markings....I got a few things to do to it the belts are really bad and the next Video will be about fitting the Chinese inverter drive and programming it... I have ordered a few bits for it like centers and a tail stock chuck etc, looking forward to using it in anger! any other info you have would be great...Cheers...Trevor

@@jetblack11td i think that i still have the original belts..or atleast as old as you do and those still work great :) i only adjusted the plain bearings from the headstock and now to its only 0.03mm when lifted from the spindle with half meter bar. i see that you are missing the threading dial. oh...and go join sheldon group in yahoo :) i think you will be happy with the lathe...i have made some nice and big chips with it.

Hello Michel thanks of the reply ...I'm concentrating on sorting out the drive system at the moment, fitting the new motor which need a mounting making and a pulley fitting I have a Chinese variable speed drive for it........the next video will hopefully show how to wire up and program one.... As far as using the Lathe the best thing is a couple of books....... How To Run A Lathe: For The Beginner : How To Erect, Care For And Operate A Screw Cutting Engine Lathe Which is a book produced by the South Bend Lathe company in the 1950's will tell you most for the functions as these are extremely similar very standard machines Available for Amazon for about £5 ($7.50) cheap! Basic Lathe-work (Workshop Practice) Paperback - 29 Nov 2010 by Stan Bray (Author) is another good basic guide... All the Best...Trevor

Hello Mario.....Have you had a look at the Sheldon group at groups.io/g/sheldonlathe you have to sign up... there is quite a bit about metric screw cutting. somebody on there might be able to help... I have seen quite a few 3D printed gears on ebay do a search for 127 teeth lathe gears I saw ones for a Logan lathe not sure about if the teeth are the same profile another www.bearingboys.co.uk/Metric-EN8-Gears/SS10127A-10-Mod-x-127-Tooth-Metric-Spur-Gear-In-Steel-67791-p I'm at home currently due to the virus hopefully I will finish sorting out the inverter drive for mine I'd like to sort the belts etc too but lock down has now happened in the UK... going to have to wait till happier times!! as the lathe is round a friends workshop....all the best and stay safe...Trevor

I rebuilt my 13” recently. I can confirm there’s a woodruff key that belongs there. Make sure you join the Sheldon yahoo group. There are a bunch of us there.

Thanks Rasheed I have got what I think is the correct woodruff key... I'll try fitting it soon, I have got some other bits sorted out tailstock chuck live centre etc... have been working on the inverter drive and setting it up and the control buttons etc yesterday had it running the motor...seems OK, shot some video too...I have joined the Yahoo group expect questions in your mail box soon!...All the best Trevor
