I pretty much knew exactly what I was going to see and experience on my second thru-hike of the Sheltowee. This is the full length documentary of my Unsupported Fastest Known Time attempt on the 343 mile Sheltowee Trace on October 24, 2021. This video is condensed from an 8 part series that was over 2.5 hours in total length, which can be found below if wanting to see more detail of how each day unfolded. My final time was 7 days, 16 hours and 46 minutes. This FKT was defeated by Cal Swartzentruber one year later on October 25th 2022 by just over 5 hours.

Awesome video! Completing a 300+ mile trek in just over 7 days in those conditions has to be one of the most remarkable feats imaginable. The determination and endurance you showed is incredibly inspirational for anyone looking to take on a challenge. What an incredible journey Jason! You’re the ultimate beast! Thanks for sharing!

I used this Roosevelt quote twice now, once in a live stream I recently did and again at a presentation I gave to a backpacking group, so thank you again for mentioning it in this comment!

Great story. Amazing effort in light of the very challenging conditions. Quite a test of endurance and fortitude. I have an idea and humble suggestion for how to perhaps deal with the queasy stomach at the beginning due to the strennousness. I know it may sound odd, but maybe right before the fkt, hike 10-15 fast paced miles each day on the two days before the fkt attempt. That way you may have built up the ability/hunger and have a settled stomach to eat and keep food down right from the outset of the fkt. I know the first couple days of a hike, I do not feel like eating. For the feet, do you use something like rocket pure foot salve or the like and keep dry wool socks for the time you are resting? The salve and the religious preservation of dry sleep socks that you put on after slathering on the salve and rubbing the feet may help the feet a bit. Maybe you have already tried this. In any case, great mental and physical endurance test. Thank you for such inspiring, honest depictions of the reality of these awesome quests.

Yes, I use rocket pure at night if I've had wet feet but typically not needed on regular short backpacking trips. The queasy stomach has only happened a few times and only after 37-60 miles and then it goes away and never returns. It would be impossilbe to recreate that before an attempt...short runs back to back has never bothered me and I can eat like a horse all day long except for the few hours where i feel distress after a 15+ hour day pushing hard on trail. Thanks for the input though! I won't have a need to figure it out because I wont be doing any long ones like this again now that I just set the overall fastest known time on the Sheltowee two weeks ago at 6 days, 9 hours....I'm done!
