Counter theory: Jyggalag isn't actually crazy, he just knows that the only possible way that he could take over oblivion was to first become sheogorath. No matter what he did, the other daedra would always stop him. So he set it up so that they had another problem. One that they would have to focus on instead of him. One that would allow him to eventually sneak off, and consolidate power somewhere else. He's playing the long game

I find this a convincing take, as a being that would know what’s to come he must’ve seen it coming- I’ll also add that order is not necessarily a completely neutral force, I’d describe him as more of a being of entropy- the universe as a whole is a constant battle of entropy vs chaos, and if the way things in the world of elder scrolls play out like how we think it will in our own universe, eventually order and entropy will win, ending in a constant nothingness devoid of… anything, really

I could absolutely see a story about Sheogorath where he decides to kill some mortal, because why not, but the mortal effortlessly swats away all the attempts. At the end of the mortals natural life, Sheogorath comes before the dying mortal and asks how they where able to best him for so long. “Simple really. So long as I kept you entertained, you’d have no reason to ACTUALLY kill me.” And the two of them laugh and laugh, all the way back to the Shivering Isles, for only the truly mad could best the Mad God
@fireblast133
@fireblast133 Жыл бұрын
This does tie in to a certain detail that Haskill brings up. Sheo is truly grateful for you helping to stop Dagon in Oblivion and Alduin in Skyrim. The mad god cannot be entertained by the dead. You saved all of mortal kind, and in doing so, saved Sheo’s entertainment. It’s likely why he’s more amicable to the player character in each game he appears in, simply cause you’re the one fated to save the world or stop a deadly crisis.

My favorite story is how Sheogorath beat Hircine's challenge. It's a lesson of terrifying insight: No matter how powerful, indomitable or fierce someone is, they can never be saved from themselves and their personal failings. Even if nobody else holds the keys to your downfall, you yourself always will. If you want to truly destroy someone, what you need to know is what will awaken this, this... itch, be it obsession, mistrust, madness, addiction or hunger for power. Once you do that, you can just sit back and watch them destroy themselves. It kinda mirrors how Jyggalag was cursed to become Sheogorath as well as the story about the wizard who became mad even though Sheogorath did nothing but let him stew in his paranoia for a few days.

@@gatordragon6140 Outside of the original points I’ve made there’s nothing too concrete that proves that he’s the Hero of Kvatch. However, considering that Shivering Isles takes place at the end of Oblivion, and Skyrim is chronologically a sequel to Oblivion, it’s a safe assumption that the player character becomes Sheo during the end of the Shivering Isles and the events that take place during the 100 year gap in-between Oblivion and Skyrim. I also believe that Sheo having a redesign in Skyrim could imply that he’s not quite the same as he was before, him having whited out eyes instead of yellow cat eyes, his hair being longer with a different style, his beard being shorter and less defined, and his outfit looking distinctly different than it did before during Oblivion.

Big congratulations to getting him and totally agree with your theory of the 2 Sheogoraths. As someone who started with Skyrim and went backwards through the games, coming back to 5's quest with more knowledge of the history and the subtle change in character design(because it's not like they couldn't have put the beard on that Sheo model, they had close enough ones that it would have been a simple leap) gave me the thought that it was the Hero of Kvatch's ultimate fate. The thing that makes Sheogorath scary is if he every really wanted to he probably could take over Nirn, he knows exactly how to manipulate and prod people to do what he wants, he also might be able to see the future, or at least predict the results of actions taken, like with the meteor he chucked at Morrowind, sure the tribunal stopped it, but when the tribunal fell apart so did the magic stopping the meteor, causing it to smash into the ground and set off Red Mountain, there the potential that from the moment he was going to take that action he knew exactly what the tribunal were going to do and how the story would end. The only reason he's not more of a threat is because it's all a game to him, he's in it to have fun and nothing more.

This is my personal theory that since daedra can take on the shape and forms they wish no matter what the player looked like he ended up changing his visage to match that of the one who mentored him into madness in a way as a sign of respect.

To me jiggalag represents entropy in the elder scrolls universe His grand order would essentially be the death of the universe. A grand stillness where causality ends and things simply are without effecting the existence of other things. Irl, we have a concept known as heat death, an end of the universe where all energy that could cause a reaction (read; literally what all life and history is made of) is used up and all that's left is just some matter in its most base form sitting there. We don't know exactly what matter will sit there, or if anything happens after this, but it is essentially the universe dying and becoming calm and still. In both situations order is achieved, the chaos of the universe coming to an end, but life can't exist in a universe without chaos to drive it forward

I personally think the reason Jyggalag was willingly repeating his cycle over and over again and while possibly seeing his downfall continued anyway, is because it’s his nature to put things in order, he sees chaos and madness and must challenge it, must place order to it, he is compelled to do because it’s what makes him, him.

Now that you say it’s made me realize something. It’s interesting that each game in the main Elder Scrolls series from Morrowind onward have each had an expansion/dlc dedicated to a Daedric Prince in some way. Morrowind had Hircine’s grand hunt under the Blood Moon, Oblivion the Last Greymarch in the sheogorath’s shivering isles, and Skyrim had the legendary battle between two Dragonborn in the realm of forbidden knowledge of Hermaeus Mora. Makes you wonder if they’ll continue the trend with Elder Scrolls 6 and which one they’d focus on….

11:20 as I understand the Daedra generally being more chaotic is only a coincidence because the only thing that defines them is that they didn't invest power into Mundus. I can imagine that most of them rejected Lorkhan's pitch because the mortal plane would be too restrictive for their taste, but I bet Jyggalag felt the opposite: that Mundus would be too messy and random compared to his own crystalline realm.

Sheogorath's realm is so beautiful and dangerous. And as someone who suffers from bipolar disorder, it captures so much of how I feel during different phases of the illness. The depression and terrifying delusions, the paranoia, feeling like soneone or something is after you. And the mania. The delusions of grandure. The unmatched feelings of utter creativity. The strange and wonderful flight of ideas. The absolute delight of bringing a piece of art to life. And strange as it sounds, I don't want to give up my illness entirely. There is a creative passion that I can't fully describe. And frankly, a little bit of madness is part of who I am. I take my meds of course. But it isn't a cure. My symptoms are just at a more managable level. After all, I do still have responsibilities. I can't spend days without sleep, paying attention to only my artwork. I have kids. Hm. I like to think that the deal with Sheo in Skyrim is one of two things: The Champion of Cydoril is still *mostly* sane, he just plays the character of Sheogorath to keep things going. Depending on how you play that quest, Sheo is not quite as negatively insane. He sends you to help Pelagius be more comfortable in his madness. Or, maybe, the Champion of Cyrodil was *created* by Sheogorath as his child and future self.

Simply said: the hero of kvatch just did not simply became someone claiming the title of sheogorath, daedric of madness, he quite literally became sheogorath himself. He literally transformed into the sheogorath we saw before, he did a quest for. With all his powers, looks and even his undying love for cheese. In other words, the hero of kvatch seeked out sheogorath, helped sheogorath and became sheogorath.

I think jyggalag was stuck in a paradox, the cycle became a new order, something that must continue, the way things are now and seemingly would be forever, he was curesed to loop the cycle forever now due to his nature. Whereas sheogorath being chaotic is able to break the cycle due to his nature being disrupting the natural order of things. It's a sort of cruel irony for both of his forms. The truest form of toruture the other princes could bestow no matter what he does he is going against his true goal.

I figure the best way to go about the outcome of the Shivering Isles is that Jiggalag learned to coexist with Sheogorath as equally important facets of the world. For sure he still wants to spread order but not to the point of total destruction of everything else. Both seemed pretty tired and unhappy with the perpetual cycle of destruction they were stuck in as a single individual.

I like to think that Skyrims questline indicates the current Sheo is a bit more compassionate. He's less aggressive towards you than what you'd expect and sets in motion a chain of events that seems to put pelagius to rest, freeing him of his madness. I know this video is 8 months old but I kinda feel like sheo…is at least (in a small way) good at heart. I know it doesn’t seem that way but the speech he gives in the shivering isles DLC just before he transforms reads to me that it isn’t just the fact that his realm will change. It reads like he cares about his subjects. When he invented music, it was because he took joy in listening to the birds chirp, when the people called upon him when the king basically removed chaos from his kingdom: he brought joy back to the people of said kingdom using madness. Hell in a way, he actually gave the wizard a form of knowledge by showing him that madness lies within us all. I feel like he understands that madness and joy can be one and the same. He also seems to understand that joy is best shared with people. In a weird way, he seems to want to make people happy (which usually involves driving them mad). I might be reading too deep into this but it really does seem like on some level, his intentions are slightly good. I believe that in his own mind, he isn’t just trying to entertain himself: he’s trying to spread “joy” to the people of Tamriel. In his mind, joy and madness are one and the same.

A theory that I’m a fan of is that Jyggalag was always the daedric prince of madness. As in he was the daedric prince of order and madness while Sheogorath is the daedric prince of chaos and madness after all Jyggalag in his very nature never tried anything different hence why the greymarch always resulted in him becoming Sheogorath again because he does the same thing over and over expecting a different result which is the very essence of madness. It was only through Sheogorath’s actions of bringing someone in to protect his home instead of waiting around for something different to happen that the two separated

Regarding Jyggalag’s status as a Daedra: Aedra and Daedra are separated by whether they assisted in the creation of Mundus, yes? So the title has no bearing on their morality. Jyggalag can perform good and bad deeds based on their obsession for control, it doesn’t make them Aedra.

This video was great, I remember my first playthrough of the Shivering Isles, seeing the hints that not all was as it seemed with the prince, pun absolutely intended 😂 and being fully blown away when I discovered that he and Jyggalag were one and the same. It made so much sense, but was still a slick subversion of my expectations. The portrayal of the citizens of Mania and Dementia contrasted marvelously and I found it fascinating to explore that while Mania was definitely the more outwardly pleasant experience, Dementia actually seemed more inviting and genuine. The people there were absolutely bleak and depressed, but on a whole, they were welcoming and forgiving, while the citizens of Mania were harsh and ruthless, thinking of nothing that did not further their own brand of madness. I ended up siding with Dementia because I figured that the citizens there deserved to be free of the duchess' paranoia and cruelty. I really enjoyed the portrayal of the Golden Saints and Dark Seducers, you imagine the "dark side" to be the ungrateful, demeaning, brutal side, but the Seducers treat you with respect and curtesy, while the Saints belittle you, speak brusquely and are dismissive of your accomplishments and taunt you for your failures. I love the build up of the finale. Sheogorath literally tells you that you'll become him, but everything you know about him and everything you've experienced up to that point says not to believe him. He doesn't usually lie, but he never tells the truth. I'll become him... will he take me over? Will I become a citizen of the Shivering Isles, in essence a part of him as his realm is a reflection of him and it's inhabitants are conduits for his will and being? Will he give me his power so that I'm attacked by Jyggalag and he can escape? I never thought for a moment that I would actually become the mad god, in essence and in form, but then at the end, Jyggalag names you to be Sheogorath, and wishes you well with your realm, then buggers off to wherever Daedra go when they're not mucking about on the mortal plane or invading one of their fellow princes' domains. It was so interesting to have the rug ripped out from under me not by some random, unpredictable twist, but rather by having things play out exactly as planned. Sheogorath's last act as the prince of madness, was to succeed in an elaborate plan that required forethought, planning and preparation, his plan required order. He became Jyggalag before the Grey March even started, he organized, planned and executed, something the prince of madness should not have been able to do. He brought order into his world so that he could save it from being destroyed by that same order. Just an all around great character and great DLC experience. I'd love to see a video about Arcturus Mengsk, the emperor of Starcraft's human faction. I think he has enough lore and subtlety to fit your style of video and I really enjoy the storytelling and lore of the Starcraft universe so it would be great to get your take on his character.

10/10 lore recap. I like how you touched the analysis of Madness as a double edged sword that can bring both creativity and actual insanity, and I also like and agree on your analysis of Jyggalag. It makes a lot of sense that knowing everything and being able to organize it logically has a shade of madness on itself related to obsession. I like to think Order on itself, is not a bad thing, quite the contrary, it literally shapes existence, but if Order is in shackles, freedom is not possible, or something like it, it really makes interesting material for philosophical debating. It seems like an especially happy ending to stop the greymarch because Jyggy seems grateful to be finally set free, which may be a catalyst for him to become a less threatening Prince even, as well as having Sheogorath become a full entity instead of just a curse aspect. Contrary to popular memeing, the definition of insanity is not exactly that, but instead, it has something to do with "the disability to differentiate reality from fantasy". A touch of Madness infuses creativity, but it only becomes insane when that connection to what is actually real, is severed. Personally, I like to think the Champion of Cyrodiil is indeed the same one you meet in Skyrim, however, another fact about Daedric Princes is the fact they can appear as whatever form they choose to. From a developer point of view this makes it easier to present the same design as in Oblivion rather than attempting to recreate your player character from a different game. Might as well have been the Skooma Cat. The important is, he remembered the Oblivion crisis. Another idea going around is that Sheo's personality is eternal, so doesnt matter who the player is, they'll inevitably get overridden by Uncle Sheo, and use that form. But that's the dark and depressing outcome depending on one's view if you played Oblivion. For my own fanfiction/character lore, I do a bit of both, going with the idea that my player had to endure more tests to be able to retain her personality and enough of her sanity to keep existing, and Sheogorath, became a multiple entity which enables the "talking to yourself" thing, which is normally a symptom of insanity, except here, she, and Uncle Sheo are literally 2 separate personalities of the same prince, Actually 3 for my fanfic, but... nobody cares, the point is, there's more than a few ways to theorize what is going on, which is a beauty on itself because of how a single character can inspire imagination enough to make lore theories about them. Finally, there's the idea that both logic and madness already live within us all, so that's actually deep.

I love the whole story with Jigalag and Sheogorath. I like to think that Jigalag always existed within Sheogorath, like Carolin in Glados only influencing a bit more stuff. infact i always thought that the whole plot line to make you the new Sheogorath and break the cycle thus freeing Jigalag in the prosess was from the beginning Jigalag subtly plotting his return. i also like the idea that Jigalag was always the madness god. Like in the show Reboot with Megabite and Hexadecimal both were rather powerful but Megabite was the one who was far more dagerous because he had more focus and a actual longterm plan rather than his sister who was just chaoticly doing what ever she felt like. I think the same analogy can apply to Sheogorath and Jigalag both ultamitly the same threat but one was much more focused those making them the bigger threat.

thematically i always saw jyggalag/sheogorath as kind of being a mirror for the concept of entropy, on the case to case entropy is usually seen as smth that introduces chaoticness to otherwise perfect energy transfers, but in the larger picture this entropy is slowly equalling out all energies in the universe. This idea of jyggalag as representing heat death could also be why i believe he is so powerful/feared

As I was listening, it reminded me deeply of the 2 aspects of the god Saturn. Sequence (represented here by Jygalagg), and opportunity (represented here by Sheogorath).

Wes is an absolute treasure and too good for this industry. His absence from ESO is just another bulletpoint in a long list of reasons why that game sucks and has no soul.

I know that this video is meant to be specifically about Sheogorath (and you did an excellent job btw, thank you for this video, it was genuinely entertaining) but really it kind of got me thinking back on my time playing the different elder scrolls games. Ill always love skyrim, and it just has objectively better mechanics than other TES games... But I grew up playing Morrowind and Oblivion, and there are just so many unique things about each of them..
