When you are reading it the way Sherlock said it the first time. Then there is nothing special. It is just the woman, same as the man, the child, the policeman, nothing special. But if you read it the way he said it the second time. The emphasis on the word "The" shows that there is a special meaning. Think of it as "The one and only" or "The special". This shows that Irene Adler has a special place in Sherlock's heart. She is not just any ordinary woman dubbed "The woman", she is "THE woman".

@@gauravjangra2548 Hey Gaurav. In the end, the police and Mycroft tell John that Irene Adler was killed by a terrorist organization in Karachi, Pakistan because she leaked info about their organization through her phone. But what they don't know is that SH was there at the place of the execution, in fact, SH himself was the executioner. Meaning, he had been keeping a track on Irene and in the end saved her from death. John was supposed to tell SH this story about her that she was executed. But decides to lie to him so that he doesn't feel bad about the situation and says that she is alive and in America. In the scene just before the execution in Karachi, it is showed that she is allowed to make one last message to SH, but when she sends it, the message tone plays right by her side (in the executioner's pocket) which means the executioner was SH. Now, this TRUTH is only known by SH. Everyone else, including the police, Mycroft, the Government, and all other terrorist organizations believe that Irene is dead. So they won't follow her anymore. And she can finally start a new life with a new identity.

I think one of the underrated layers of this scene is how Sherlock knows that John (in the rare position of knowing something Sherlock doesn't) is wrestling with how to deliver the terrible news, ultimately deciding to stay silent, and carry the weight for him. While Irene consumes the bulk of his thoughts, there's a fleeting moment (2:18-2:21) where you get the sense that for Sherlock, it's a kindness (quiet and w/o fanfare) that does not go unnoticed.

It’s this knowledge that empowers Sherlock to, in spite of his often inhuman disposition, perhaps appreciate Watson’s position (grappling with whether to reveal Irene’s fate, or to tell him a happy lie). As he also knows Watson thinks he is unaware of Irene’s fate. In a sense he gets to observe Watson with the same omniscience the audience does (w/the added advantage of knowing he’d spared Irene). I'd like to add how funny it is for johnlockers to interpret this scene as proof of jonhlock. Bc Sherlock put the phone away and the entire Irene theme was played. My guys, boys and girls, there has never been any johnlock and what you've just seen is Adlock.

So many things in one scene, Sherlock worried when he thought whether Irene came to London and when John said America, he was relaxed that all think she died... Him asking Irene's phone which is her heart, John feeling bad for Sherlock that the only woman he cared is dead.. John's jealousy and awkwardness when Sherlock begged twice for the phone, and then when he asked about the message and Sherlock said about her last message, the heart break in John's face...Oh my god.....Also it reminds me of 'The sign of three' episode where during his mind palace thing, Irene comes in a flirt way to disturb Sherlock and he says I am busy, get out of my head aww....Also in 'The lying detective' when John deducted that it's Sherlock's birthday, it says a lot that Irene is very close to Sherlock, even John didn't know his birthday but she did know and John knows that Irene texts him on special occassions and it cannot be any other day except his b'day damn....Then in the 'Final problem' , Eurus asks Sherlock to play his heart and he plays Irene Adler theme to which Eurus asks have u had sex? I was like so happy but tensed at the same time..... Irene's smile and Sherlock's gesture to save her is so intense, there's something people....My heart, my brain , my body exploded

"John's jealousy and awkwardness when Sherlock begged twice (for the phone)." Twice. The writers did a marvelous job of relating everything to everything else, didn't they?

Unfortunately no film adaption ive ever seen continues irene’s story. I think its cuz most just stick to ACD’S books only. But there are about 4 authors of sherlockian books out there. Sherlock/irene ended up together & with one son named after john f a few others & who goes by the name nero wolf. Sherlock also outlives everyone & dies at 103, his last breath is “oh irene irene.” Rather a tragic love story. He also has two older brothers, not one as well as a sister. Sherrinford (which was ACD’S original pick of names for the sherlock character before picking sherlock) is hinted at in ACD’S books but not by name. Apparently some stuff mycroft did could not have happened unless there was an older brother involved. Sherrinford then mycroft then sherlock then enlola, their sister. But she is in other books, not ACD’S. siger & violet are alluded to in ACD’S work. Sigerson pops up somewhere...essentially son of siger. The parents of sherlock (& the others. Enola’s second name violet is from their mother. Sherlock is actually his second name. William is his first...& then scott is the third family name. William sherlock scott holms. Of course you gotta do sht ton of reading & be willing to explore all sherlockian books, not just ACD’S to get the whole story. That being said, sherlocks honeybees are in the ACD books, but ive yet to see them in films. Benedict cumberbatch is related to ACD so hopefully he knows about the bees from the books. Id like to see them!

Honestly, I do believe I like it as it is now. This episode, and this particular ending, is one of my favorite if not most favorite TV moments of all time. The way it ends allows for open interpretation of what happens moving forward. Although I honestly expected there to be interaction between these two in some way, shape, or form at some point later in the series I’m quite alright with how they left it alone. Really, truly, one of the best TV episodes of all time. All these years later this STILL gets to me even though I know what’s coming.

0:29 I got to feel sorry for John, having Sherlock bloody Holmes staring down at him like that when he told the lie about Irene. Cause you can just see it from 0:32 and 0:35 that Sherlock doesn’t buy it for one second. If I were John I’d just be like 'Screw it! I should’ve let Mycroft say it.'

Even more hilarious is when john says “witness protection program” & sherlocks face is like...yeah about that.....cuz at that moment, sherlock is the only one who knows what is actually going on! 😂

At the end I think the rain on the window sliding across Sherlock's eyes has somehow tell the us that he deeply care about her and she is the only Woman will forever exist in his music, mind palace and heart, but at the same time he knows he has little chance to see her ever again. He didn't cry, his heart does. Soon he walked away from the window and move on with his life.

I got to admit that I have only seen this episode today and I can't believe nobody mentioned the scene right before this one. In which Mycroft tells John what 'happened to Irene'. John first says: 'he just refers to her as the woman', thinking it has no meaning. But Mycroft's line is even more powerful: 'it would take Sherlock Holmes to fool me'. Oh yes it would.
