I am a single grandma who has built a pantry and freezer this way. My daughter recently moved from WI to Texas. I was able to tell her to shop my pantry and refrigerator for picnic meals for on the road traveling, then I was able to give her 75 percent of my monthly grocery budget to help her stock her kitchen in her new home.

My mom got Covid last year and was in a coma for 2 month. We also had a death in the family at the same time so my parents house had a rotating door for almost 4 months. She stocks up just like this and I was able to take over making meals for the plethora of family coming and going the whole time. Aside from grocery shopping for fresh (milk, produce, bread, etc.) her pantry sustained us for those 4 months easily. Disaster planning doesn’t always mean end of the world but rather real life happening.

I keep a permanent marker in my pantry. Before anything gets put on a shelf, I write the expiry date on the front label so I can read it easily. My eyes are getting too old to see some of those date Stamos. Instead of buying cans of tomato paste or tomato sauce, I keep tomato powder. A little powder and water can make paste, sauce, tomato soup, etc and I can control the amount of salt. The powder takes up very little space compared to all those cans.

You are doing a great service to others - thank you!! My father got a little upset with me when he saw that I kept pantry food on hand that I cycle through and make meals with (I don't live very far from a few WalMarts & other grocery retailers, but I have a spine injury, not too easy to shop when in pain) - listening to everyone learning to be better prepared reminds me of home ec classes I took all through middle and a couple of years in high school. I prefer to keep food on hand, in the case I am not well enough to go out, or the weather is bad. I stick to my guns, so to speak, no matter what anyone tells me about quantities of foodstuffs.

I'm team: "make my own bone broth." I've found it can be a lot more cost effective in many ways. Soup bones either at the grocery store or butcher can be pretty cheap generally. Get like, oh, eight of the good sized beef bones, a bunch of veggie peels, tops, herbs. Roaster pan. I use a counter top one that holds 28 quarts. You can definitely use a big ol' stock pot. I love the roaster because you can set it and forget it. Add appropriate amount of water, bout halfway or 3/4. Simmer 24 hours, generally takes care of itself. Instead of a store bought carton of bone broth that can run anywhere from 4-6 dollars a 12 to 16 ounce carton, for the low price of oh say, $20.00-$25.00 for bones and time that you don't even have to babysit it, you can get upwards of 3-4 gallons of broth, depending on how much your wanting to make. Same premise for chicken. Save those bones, save veggie scraps and getting past their prime vegatables. Simmer, bone broth. Strain, freeze. Lasts nicely for two years in the freezer. If you want to pressure can the broth? Years of broth at your fingertips, for a super low cost. Hope this helps! 😇😁

I am down to only 4 people living at home full-time, but my 18yo son also works nearly full-time so is not always home for meals. Almost every Sunday my daughter-in-law, oldest son, and grandson come over for Sunday dinner. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Sunday's! Now, if I could only get that middle son of mine over it would be perfect! Kids grow up and move out and you have to adjust to that. It is so hard! My pantries are fully stocked with the things those of us who live here need and enjoy. I still have 2 deep freezers as I store things for my grown kids if they should ever need a freezer meal or something out of it. Every year, when we got our tax refunds, we would stock our pantry, freezer, laundry and personal hygiene products and dog food; we rarely spent that money on anything else except bills and food and clothes for the next season for the kids and school supplies, no “fun” spending. We are now empty nesters and Nola get receive tax refunds but we still keep our pantry stockpiled, which is a good thing over the past 2.5 years and now our daughter and her family are moving back and staying with us until they can purchase a home, so we are not sweating trying to stock up but we are beefing up our pantry and freezer earlier than usual as we usually we replace stock/freezer every 3 months so this month is a bit earlier than planned and double what we would normally buy, but we are going from 2 adults, 2 dogs and a car to 4 adults and 3 children, 6 dogs and 3 cats. So glad for pantry and long term stockpiling. To that end, we never ran out of or had to hunt down toilet paper during the height of the pandemic because we had plenty to last us for a year 😂

I have a stocked pantry this size also...but what I do differently is I take a black sharpie pen and write on the front of every can/jar/box/bag.. the best by/use by date on it...that way I can clearly see the dates. Makes it so much easier to grab the ones needed to be used first and keep the stock rotated...so many times nowadays the manufacturers are putting the use by dates on places on the product that make it almost impossible to find or even read....once I write the date on the front of the product, I never have to look for it again.....and yes, it is part of my OCD, it is a tiny bit time consuming to write the date on every pantry product, but it works for me_______:>)

If at all possible can you educate us on best til, use by, best before and items with just a date on them. I'd love to know thier approximate shelf life. There are times when items just get moved to unexpected areas of the pantry and you look at a date and wonder if its fresh still? I hate wasting food, makes me feel like a waster. But, I'm definitely a "better be safe than sorry" kinda a person. I've been stockpiling for about 4 years now definitely always a work in progress. But I have to say well worth it. I've learned you just never know what's around the corner. And having food on hand is one less worry. Thank you for your vlogs, support and encouragement we all get further because of it. This is such a great video! I started a rotating pantry in March 2020 and I absolutely love this way of life. Is this your pantry that you use for your day to day cooking or is there a smaller one somewhere that I've missed? Thanks for the great content :)

Thank you so much for the content you put out. Following your advice and that of a few other youtubers (with a little modification as we are in the UK, and we also have different dietary requirements due to several food intolerances and being plant based) we now have a pantry that will last at least two months and is continuing to grow every time I shop whilst sticking to my budget (mostly 🤣)

Sometimes if I see something and it's a penny or two more at the store I'm at, I'll usually get it as opposed to driving 20 min away to the other store. If I'm going around a couple towns, I shop for the cheapest sale.

Don't forget to take into consideration the cost of gas, and the wear and tare on your car when shopping! Are you really going to drive 5 more miles to save 5 cents per can?

Depends on how many cans she plans to buy.

Kimmy- you mentioned inflammation and being low gf… how did you know you were having issues? I’m starting to struggle with random symptoms and anxiety about it all…trying to think it’s normal aging, but would love to hear your journey

How are you finding the quality of the Food Club items? Some has been fine for me but others have been terrible multiple times. Like the jellied cranberry sauce was two thirds water in multiple cans. Just because the price is lower for some things doesn't mean you are saving money if the quality is bad. I like to buy one or two (even at the regular price) to check the quality before I invest in buying mulitple in sale. Because if I buy a flat or half flat of something and then it isn't good it is a waste since it won't get used. In my town about a year and a half ago they stopped carrying Western Family brand and started with Food Club (I don't know if this was a universal change or just here) and I mistakenly thought it would be the same quality as Western Family had been for the past thirty years. So wrong! Verify quality before investing in quantity! Here ends my PSA. Have a good autumn and God Bless!

Always love your videos! I looked for the link for the pizza sauce recipe, but didn’t see it. Do you use your Italian gravy for pizza, too? Thanks!

Thank you for all of your teachings. I've learned so much from you. My husband now makes it a game to see 'what do we actually need to buy?' lol, I get to answer, 'nope, got it...nope got that too' it's in the pantry :) I just started, but right now just building on the things we eat the most. And we are team 'better than bouillon'

Great info price book great idea 👍 I avoid the Food Club brand the quality of their food in can is not as good and they have had the most problems long term open and compare you can see lack of quality compared it's worth paying a few more cents for different brand.

A great tip for you (if you have the space to set up the shelves) - if you allow walking space on the back side of the shelves, it will be easier to stock new items in the back and keep older ones in the front. And labels help your helpers put things where you want them. Peace

This is something I've wanted to address for a while. I can't eat seeds, corn, or nuts. I wish you could suggest replacements for those when sharing recipes. Thanks
@kam21622 жыл бұрын
Really!! Be proactive. If you can't eat something, you should be the expert on subbing for that food. Search out recipes that are for example nut free. As you do, you will find others who need to eat nut free. Follow them and you will learn what they use to substitute. As you experiment you will come up with what works, what you like and what you don't. Kimmy gives us all this great content, yet you want her to tell you what to sub every time she has a recipe that uses nuts, seeds or corn. Ridiculous!
@eyestoseeearstohear90302 жыл бұрын
Where would it end? There are all kinds of special diets, dietary restrictions, allergies, food intolerances, etc. Should she give substitutions for each and every person who has xxx food restrictions? I would think that if one has a food issue that person would be responsible for researching alternatives and testing recipes.

I did my yearly check on my canned goods and had to throw out 5 cans.....last year was only one can....so I have to plan meal kits so I can use up pantry items more often...and do more date checking....goal is zero waste.
