I remember watching my dad (when he was close to 50) do randori with another of our old dudes (who was at least mid-60s), and it was kind of funny. Neither one of them had a problem taking a fall when the other got in, and the way you could tell when one of them really caught the other was when one of them swore. My dad would usually blurt out, "oh shit!", while the other guy would call him a 'lucky bastard'. They really had a good time, and it was fun for everyone else, too. They really set a good example of truly Old Guy judo.

Shintaro. This is great stuff. I'm an old man. Yes I have been playing since 1972. Like most of my peers, I dislike kumi kata. I play randori with the following attitude for my opponent: "You take your grip, I'll take mine. Show me what you can do." I think that you see much more variety and elegance in the techniques in this style. The Judo isn't quite as scrappy, and it's much more fun. Once in a while, an old man will catch a young opponent with a clean technique, leaving him scratching his head.

I broke my ankle last week in my 3rd month of Judo. I cracked the lower 1/2 inch end of the tibia. Surgery in a week. I've worked out all my life with all sorts of sports, and now I am 62. I fought in 3 wars and was wounded in one of them. I went through rehab then, and made it back to full recovery. I've been injured in sports many, many times with a few hairline factures but mostly ligament and muscle injuries. I really enjoy Judo. It is the highlight of my day, until I broke my right ankle. I didn't keep my right leg underneath my body the way I was supposed to as I was flipping my training partner. Give me a good reason to stay with Judo?
@eddard9442 Жыл бұрын
How did it happen exactly? Were you flat footed?
@steeltalon2317 Жыл бұрын
@@eddard9442 I was trying to flip my 270 ibs. partner, but I believe that I wasn't keeping my feet underneath me. So much of his weight was on my ankle. I've watched a lot of KZbin reviews and read 2 Judo books since. My conclusion is that I have to be more careful. I can't approach Judo like I was a 20 year old, or like I see in the Olympics. Flat footed. Yes, having watched a number of older Judo black belts and see what your describing. I am a black belt in Korean Hapkido, so I can do all the falls with my eyes shut. I did break a rib in Hapkido when I as a white belt. Yesterday, I was in the gym doing some rehab exercises. One of my friends was there and he told me that he had torn his ACL, and quit Judo as a brown belt. So I am really torn what to do. I don't want to quit. But, I can't just get injured to that level on a consistent basis.

You are talking about older guys so actually you DO want to destroy the ACL & you DO want to destroy the arm~!! In your 60s you are not engaging in rough and tumble play. If you have to do any of these things it'll only be because you are defending yourself or your spouse against seriously dangerous threats, and you gotta get it done immediately and you gotta completely disable the attacker. If one puts any energy into learning how not to destroy the other guys joints, one will likely end up on the ground where the attacker's homeys will be able to reign kicks to one's head and back use knives with impunity.
