Oh that's me for sure. I started Judo at 53, I'm 60 years old now and a brown belt. The biggest tip I have for old guy Judo (but it really applies to everyone) is to stay relaxed. The younger guys come out all intense during randori, I look like I'm about to take a nap, lol. Conserve your energy then explode into your throws. If I'm going to get thrown I might as well be relaxed when it happens 😀.
@frederickmorton275
@frederickmorton275 Жыл бұрын
100%. Too risky to resist the throws. If I feel that I missed the moment to defend the throw I almost throw myself to make sure I don't land in the dodgy position (say on my shoulder after partner throws me with some makikomi throw).

Good stuff, really. I am a brown belt and re-started my judo at 37 years. Man, randori is tough, I am flexible like a brick and I cannot do my favorite technique because my shoulder hurts. BUT, it does get better in time. The imporant thing is to keep coming and keep fighting. Accepting that you will loose, a lot, and you kind of want easy losses, because you dont want to get hurt. Still, old reflexes do come back and I can dominate the fight if I am fresh and relaxed. Suggestion: make a video for 40+ old, where you for example suggest the exercises to keep the flexibility and techniques that dont require too much explosive power. I think we should still be able to make pressure, even when 40+, but not many uchi matas.

Got back to judo at 38 from brown belt background. Got black belt last year, and ... well I am that "old guy". I do it almost like described in the video, whithout the dirty belt trick. At first, I was rusty and just couldn't attack, so I kept defending and throwing with Sasae or Ura nage. I got some success but I was shameful. Now, thanks to mister Higashi and the crew, I've got this brand new idea : finding MY judo. From now on, I have a whole new world in front of me : getting creative and ... attack attack attack. Just last week I had some clues about what I actually love to do judo-wise, and I experienced burst of happiness, because ... not being able to attack, feeling like I cannot do anything against black belts ... all those old frustrations ( 20 / 30 years old frustrations ) that were haunting me are fading out. I have got my confidence back, and it feels AWESOME. I actually CAN do judo ! I cannot thank this channel enough for that. I mean it. --- To stay on this video's topic : I practice with the old judo mentality in mind ( Mifune Kyuzo is a model ), not using unneccessary strength, no fear of being thrown, no pointless muscular resistance. The effect is, I can end randoris whithout gettint out of breath. Plus, I found that I used muscular strength to compensate for my lack of technique. Mind opening. Happy judo everyone !

this might be some of the best grappling instruction I've ever received. If only I had known about this back when I was still an old man (age 35, ten years of judo/jiujitsu and boxing, purple belt in BJJ) as opposed to now, as a 40-year-old retired senior grappler on his deathbed with only a couple years left. Jokes aside this is literally my style in a nutshell, the other guys in the gym call me "lazy man" ....they used to chant it at tournaments, "LAY-ZEE-MAN! LAY-ZEE-MAN!" also in Portuguese, "Homem preguiçoso!" highly embarrassing as I sit there hanging on for dear life to a much more talented and younger man who is getting increasingly frustrated that I won't get off him, THIS IS HOW I WIN DON'T JUDGE ME

Hey Shintaro! Started judo at 37 and love it. A poor ouchi gari plus an equally poor ukemi of my uke (both beginners) led to an ACL tear and surgery. I'm in my early rehab period now and looking forward to return in training after the required 6+ months. Since knee injuries are not uncommon in judo maybe some tips for coming back without stressing toο much the knee would be useful for old injured guys. Thanks a lot!

I am an 80 year old judoka teaching situational, no gi, self defense to young students. Unless it is winter there is no jacket to grab. I also teach very seniors, no gi, self defense. I use sweeps to off balance and then knee groin, head butt, heel of hand punch, hand cup to ear, Osoto and more. In watching your video your partner had on a jacket and knew judo. You won’t find that combo on the street. Thanks for sharing your video. A good step for seniors but the seniors I know are much older.

An amusing way to look at the topic. However, I did an "Old Man's" Judo video three years ago, so this is certainly not the first time this topic has been put out there nor is it the ONLY video geared to older practitioners. Sensei Ashida (8 dan) used to teach serious old man's judo back in the 1980s, and that is where I first was exposed to the concepts.

i sincerely wish you all the best, living with illness/disability is a trial most wont know until they are elderly. I started judo at 7, competed at a high level - but had to give it up eventually due to being disabled from the forces. BUT - it stood me in good stead, learning to manage pain, learning the importance of mussel strength and that muscle/tendon strength can help mitigate other health issues. just be sure to ease into it, don't partner with overly enthusiastic youngsters and warm up and cool down well. I also recommend daily tai chi +cardio for balance, strength endurance and flexibility. Its more important to work on these things if we have a detriment compared to normal in my opinion. Good luck brother!

Working on my green belt at the moment, the lad (10) is yellow, my daughter (8) is red and my wife, who is a little bit younger than me, is working towards her yellow. My only claim to fame is, in my younger days here in the UK we had some lad called Adams fight at our club. I used to fight him and his late brother on a regular basis.
