I have one in the 14k for offshore and beach fishing and they are workhorses in the line of the sphere. I changed out the ball bearings and even though it was smooth I could never touch the reel. I just wanted sealed high-end bearings and found in their higher-end reels. I don't regret upgrading it to prolong the life of my reel.

I baught the 4000 sw teamed up with a 9'6" savage gear specialist gs5 bass rod cast it all day 7hrs with 19grm weedless lure it was absolutely fantastic not one issue with it no knots lovely line lay cast like a dream definitely recommend this reel it your looking for lightness salt proof and casting quality for around £110 then in my opinion look no further. Than the shimano spheros sw

I’ve owned that exact model for a couple of years with zero problems. It’s the last model Stradic with two fewer bearings (replaced with nylon bushings). It’s the best bang for buck inshore reel that I own.

My current spinning reel Shimano Exage 4000 is nearly 20 years old. It's still going strong and never let me down despite my lack of maintenance and abuse. It's time to treat myself to a new reel and pull the trigger on a new Spheros SW.

I bought this exact reel this September in the keys in a pinch and I have been just as impressed with this as I have some the mid to high range I've tried from Shimano the past few years and I find it to probably be the best casting spinning reel I have owned to date still really cant believe it's on $110 MSRP!!!

Been using the 4000 for bay wading in NJ for striper, weakies and fluke a couple years. Great reel, which is actually the previous version of the Stradic. For the same money, it's a BG killer.

Glad to see this reel review! Loved the Stradic ci4's but have not been overly impressed with the Vanford especially for the price range. It feels very gritty to me and I switched to the Daiwa Ballistic because of it. May have to get a few of these Spheros and try them out!

I have the same reel. I dropped that reel when I was kayak fishing and the reel was under water (salt) for about a minute. When I got home I opened the reel to clean it and was surprised so see no water got into the gears. Great reel for the price.

One of my fav reels. It’s basically a Stradic minus a bearing. I changed the bushing to a bearing and it’s awesome. Love it off my kayak.

The Spheros reel from 1000 to 4000 are not the same reels as the Spheros 5000 and up. The reel you have has just a few seals not many. The 5000 and up have like 11 seals and is rated IPX8, which the reel you reviewed is not rated. Not say that's not a good reel just stating the fact that it not IPX8 like it's big brother.

CA heading to Marathon in March and have been looking at this reel in BPS. For a skiff angler using bait for Tarpon would you recommend this reel and if so 6000 or 8000? Thanks

Shimano was kind of silly with what they named this reel. This model is basically the Stradic FK with a bushing in the side plate and line roller. It only comes in a c3000 (2500 body with deeper spool), a 4000 and a 3000xg which is a 4000 size body with a c3000 spool. The Spheros SWA which are 5000 to I think 20000 are not the same model at all and based off of the Saragosa reel and much heftier. I would get a 6000 since you will be on a boat

@@nickstark6197 You mean 1000 and 2000 have same size body but 2000 has deeper cut spool 2500 and 3000 same size but 3000 has deeper cut spool 4000 and 5000 same size but 5000 has deeper cut spool That's how Shimanos line up works. They would never put a 3000 spool on a 4000 body. That makes absolutely zero sense But yeah , it's almost a stradic FK but having had 8 FKs at one point this reel feels nothing like a stradic. Had 2 of these reels and absolutely hated them. Plus they didn't add the long stoke spool like they did with the Ultegra and the price is only like a $40 difference of that.

@@artificialslinger9730yes the c3000 is a 2500 body with a deeper cut spool to hold more line. That is how shimano does their sizing. Anything with a “c” in front of the number means compact. A c5000 is a 4000 body with a deeper cut spool. If you look on the specs for this Spheros SW, there are only 3 models, SWc3000, SW4000, and SW3000 (which is a 4000 body with a 3000 spool). This is a very common thing shimano does. If you look on the shimano Japan site or any JDM shimano retailer, almost all models of shimano have tons of models not available here in the US. The ones with a C are like we have here, but they have 3000, 5000 etc with the body and spool set up I mentioned. They also sell different gear ratios that they don’t sell here and even dual handle models. The Spheros 3000 is the first model like this available here in the US. It’s actually pretty nice as it’s lighter than a 4000 and you have some more clearance between handle and spool if you have big fingers

This reel is almost a stradic FK but not really either. This reel feels nothing like a stradic. Had 2 of them to mess around with but hated them. This reel DOES feel stiff / sticky once you hook a big red or snook. Landed a 31" red with it and 35.5" Snook and it felt awful. This reel retails anywhere from $119.99 to $134.99 depending on location and or store ( you can actually get it for around 90-100 on Japan sites ) But for a reel at this price point for 3+1 bearings and being 9oz I would just spend the extra $70-80 ish for the stradic FL Only people I recommend any Shimano reel below the stradic is if they are a true beginner or they are extremely rough with their stuff. Outside of that if someone is gonna pay $134 might as well save for another month or two and get a stradic. At least with the Stradic you get more for your money. One piece handle , one piece bail , lighter reel ( 3000 ) 7.9 ( 1.1 oz lighter ) , 6+1 bearings so even more smoother , long stroke spool , x protect and there's so much more you get for that extra $80. I wouldn't / didn't even buy this reel for my daughter. I went with the Ultegra. But she's about to be upgraded to the Stradic FL herself.

Have an ultegra 5500 for surf fishing and it’s incredible. I don’t really like the way my 14000 serphos performs.
