I got my first three pedals around 1978/79; an EHX Small Stone, a Shinei FY-2 fuzz and a Shinei WT-1 Wah. I still have and use the Wah pedal. It’s not the oldest piece of gear I own by a long shot, but it’s the longest I’ve owned a piece of gear.

The fuzz is the same as a FY-6 Super Fuzz(the original gray box version). I own 4 of these 8Tr Wah Fuzz pedals. One is a Memphis, another is a Kimbara & a pair of Jax pedals. All four cost a bit more combined than an actual FY-6 Super Fuzz.
@nickolas6273 жыл бұрын
Would you be interested in selling one?
@mysterysurf45543 жыл бұрын
Almost the same. I think the model # on those differentiated how many transistors they had. Had one of each of the fuzz-wahs (2 different companies but same manufacturer), gave the 6 transistor model to a friend and kept the 8 transistor pedal. The early days of eBay were great for picking up old gear cheap.
@wrayven2 жыл бұрын
@@mysterysurf4554 I just got three of these pedals back from my tech last week. I him asked how different the fuzz in the 8 Tr Fuzz Wah is to Super Fuzz FY-6. He said not really much except for integrating the wah circuit into the circuit board. All I know is I own a half dozen of them and they sound pretty much the same as my ancient gray box Univox Super Fuzz. I have an early Royal Fuzz Machine, and it has separate circuity boards for the wah and the fuzz. For sure that circuit board is exactly the same as my Univox Super Fuzz. They both have the same layout with all of the same transistors, caps and resistors. They also sound the same.

@@nickolas627 I will be listing a couple up on eBay. One is already up that is labelled for Memphis. That one is pretty much untouched except for some contact cleaner in the pots. The other one is made for National. It has a replaced pot and isn't in almost mint condition. Both sound great.

I have two, (I _had_ three!) a Kimbara and a Shin Ei. The Shin Ei is the classic doomster. However, the Kimbara is simply the best pedal of this genre I've ever used or owned. Just as the fuzz circuit, the wah quality/character varies from pedal to pedal. Age plus lack of early QC, just get 'em out there! The question is, in what order is the Fuzz and Wah? Well, it's in the name: Fuzz Wah. First the Fuzz, then the Wah. The builders used a Wah circuit to filter the Fuzz's hairy roar. I used mine in the studio on gtr but for live I use it on bass.
@stilllifewithguitar1843 жыл бұрын
I have one of these, the wah sucks and it really only does that one fuzz tone, but holy hell does it do that well. Just insane. I've been thinking about rehousing just the fuzz section.
@latontolog3 жыл бұрын
If you're just interested in the fuzz part, there are a lot of comparatively affordable clones of superfuzz style fuzzes out there. You could make a fair chunk of money selling the fuzz/wah and buying a cheap superfuzz clone.
@stilllifewithguitar1843 жыл бұрын
@@latontolog I've tried a few and none really do it the same yet, although some are great in their own right. Using the Basic Audio Supafuzz on the board as a replacement for live, but still using the vintage for recording.
@latontolog3 жыл бұрын
@@stilllifewithguitar184 Yeah, I've owned and compared a lot of Superfuzz style pedals, and there is that special 2-3% magic to the vintage 8TR. Not enough to warrant putting it on a live or rehearsal pedalboard, but as you say, nice to have for recording.

Modded mine. Took the pointless (not very good compared to my Coloursound) wah out of the circuit and use the wah switch to toggle between the two modes... red and green leds added to the top to indicate which is on. I was given mine by a friend in 1985 - no badge on it - and till the internet came into my life around 2001 it was referred to as 'The Bastard' by every band member that ever dared to cross it's path.
