Great video! The Jesus & Mary Chain did indeed use the Shin-Ei fuzz/wah to create the signature sound on the "Psychocandy" record. (They also used it on later records, but it's really a huge part of the "Psychocandy" sound.) The fuzz circuit inside these fuzz/wah pedals is the same as in the Shin-Ei FY-6 pedal, also known as the Superfuzz. The Superfuzz, or clones thereof, has been used by a lot of bands. Cramps used it, Electric Wizard made the Boss FZ-2 (which is a tweaked Superfuzz clone) a key part of their sound on "Dopethrone", and Mudhoney liked it so much they named half their "Superfuzz Bigmuff" EP after it. This is my favorite fuzz sound in the world, and probably my desert island guitar pedal if I had to choose one. I'm sending my fuzz/wah to a repair shop to get it fixed up and modded for higher volume output, running off a cable rather than batteries, and some other stuff. It's the nastiest, most evil, and best fuzz sound I know!

I always wanted to know what fuzz the Mary Chain used. I read an interview with them where they said they bought a fuzz pedal off some guy in the pub but it was broken & they never knew so recorded their entire debut album with a broken fuzz & that's how they got that sound!! Its a great sound anyway. I love that album.

@mikecamps72265 жыл бұрын
Greeting Johan Segeborn, I have a client that has a pre-1970 companion without the wah, though its not a Shin-EI labeled unit but a licensed unit......he found it at a yard sale for $5 several years ago but it was kind of funky. SO in the process of servicing all his gear, I got the unit and had to rehab it for him, which is basically replacing all the electrolytic capacitors in it. So once they were all replaced, the unit came back to full glory as its very phenomenal in performance. I did notice that on the deeper bass side of the switch......that it got too bassy and dark......and examining the schematic for it, I changed a value of a signal capacitor for that part of the circuit controlled by the switch. I experimented with adjusting the capacitor value and found the point where the threshold of "bass" darkness came in and used a capacitor that just took it over into the bass range......per my ears in tuning the pedal prior to taking it back to my client for the "reveal" of the rehab'd pedal. SO what was happening in that point in time was that my client was just out with a new CD of recorded material and had been happenstance spur of the moment scheduled to play live on air for the prominent local radio stations' morning radio show......that I had not been informed that he was doing......it got scheduled that fast spur of the moment. SO I visited with him to bring the pedal over to his home studio as he was rehearsing with his band for the next morning's radio show......but I was delivering the pedal not because of the radio show.....it just happened that way. So I got there late, and they had just finished playing, and I had a pedal and a cheap Japanese spring reverb unit.....which may be another Shin-EI item but I couldn't determine that.....but anyway it came down to plugging the items in and trying them out because now they worked like they were brand new. SO we did the reverb unit first which he loved. Then it was maybe midnight, and I was nearing leaving and we were in some conversation about something as we are friends.....so I reminded him to try the pedal before I left. So he plugged in.....and it was sonic nirvana. He became total engulfed in the response of the pedal and was jamming away and getting carried away in the moment......and I was explaining that I tuned the bass side to be more effective and responsive but that it might still be kind of dark but that I could adjust it a bit further to come out from the darkness......because it comes down to "ear candy" and it was his ears and how it fit in to his other effects and how he was going to apply it to his playing style and everything else that goes with that. But he was in love with the pedals response as now he was hearing it for what it was supposed to be....and used it the following morning on the radio show...…..and I have been after him to post the radio show audio to his KZbin channel......it was beyond incredible. SO I would suggest that if your unit has not been touched, have the electrolytic capacitors replaced in it. I'd have to look at the schematic again to mention which capacitor I changed the value of, but then its going to be hard to communicate that since its not a schematic that has the components numbered. But I will have to look into this fuzz/wah to see how the wah and the fuzz fit together in that unit or if there is a deviation to the circuitry in this combined unit as compared to just the independent fuzz pedal. But I can say that he uses a crybaby wah...actually 2. One is a TDK and the other is a stack of dimes unit as they have different voices.....and I have adjusted & rehab'd them both. His remarks after the first playing that night was that it kind of sounds like an octave fuzz and that its very silky and smooth. My client plays blues and pentatonic style rock......and he is a natural type.....kind of a cross between Hendrix and Jeff Beck in a way.....has won an Albert King award and finished 2nd place in guitar center's king of the blue contest a few years on back...though he should have won compared to who did win.....and he was part of a Steve Vai world tour......he's not really an amateur player though he plays locally here where we are located. But YES these companion fuzz pedals are incredible.....I just urge you to make sure the electrolytic capacitors in the uit are new.....if they are not and you are impressed with the pedal.....just imagine it with new Caps....there are about a dozen of them just in the fuzz pedal circuit and in your case with the wah built in....probably a few more.
@mikecamps72265 жыл бұрын
I should add, my clients pedal is the grey sheet metal unit and is a super fuzz fy6 which has the switched tone control as your fuzz wah. AND that when I changed the bass tone capacitor....a side effect was that when you switched it to the bass response, the unit had a volume boost over the normal tone side which is a nice happy accident my client favored......it stepped out a little more than the normal side
@mikecamps72265 жыл бұрын
AND the reason you need to change the electrolytic capacitors in the unit......these type caps are a wet chemical composition and the body of the cap has a vent......so over time the "wet" chemical dries out and the value of the cap changes and it is possible that it can short the plates of the cap out which would not be good. SO the caps have a tonality aspect in the circuit and as they change & age...they will affect the tone. If you had purchased the unit new and used it over the years...you'd probably not really notice the variance in the tonal change as its happening gradually.....but it will fade. SO to get it back to 100% as it just came out of the box....put new electrolytic caps in it. The service life of an electrolytic capacitor is maybe 10 years....though they may still appear to be functional. Testing them is kind of misleading as they could read ok, but you are not testing them under stress while in use and that's where the critical aspect is....so its just better to change them out when they are old whether the unit is working or not.

It's a highly populated circuit that would be a bigger project to duplicate than most fuzz wah''s. I bought my JAX for $15 in 1985 from a Sunset Blvd Hollywood,CA indy guitar store's junk bin. worked perfect. I bought a MAESTRO (3 knob) PHASE SHIFTER for $15 from another indy shop down the street. Funny though, I had to pay them $20 for copies of 4 Marshall and a Mesa Boogie .22 Caliber combo amp, schematics..I built a couple great sounding 1969/1971 Marshall's, but the Mesa Boogie .22 has a uniquely hard to clone power amp. I had this pedal given to me in 1985 as a freebie, when I bought my first Marshall JMP100 (and a cab with 4x original Vox Blue speakers inside), £100. There were no manufacturer or name markings on it, so for two decades it was known as 'The Bastard'. I kid ye not. I still have it, except I'd had a few mods done i.e. took the wah circuit out (which I was never keen on, and you can always stick a better wah before or after the circuit.), routed the side-mounted circuit-selector switch to the wah rocker switch; and green/red LEDs on top to tell you whether the effect is on, and which circuit is in play. I play mine through a Hohner Orgaphon 45MH/1972 Marshall 4x12 Superbass cab. Thing is, when I bought the Marshall, my friend also offered me his 1968 Gibson SG for £200 (with the ebony fingerboard). I stupidly bought a Rickenbacker instead. Doh! p.s. Fantastic video. p.p.s. Just remembered the time I used this in The Kinks' studio, Konk, and I came back in the control room, cranked the Neve.... my manager thought he was going to poo himself.

Have had one since 1985. Doesn’t go with everything; but when you want British Middle Country stoner rock (Twink, Pink Fairies, Hawkwind) or Texas psychedelia (13th Floor Elevators, Bubble Puppy) that pedal is killer. And the SG is the right choice; but you have to kill the shrill highs. Oh, and Shin-ei retailed these 8 transistor pedals under a variety of names (Companion, Maya, Jax). You can find them easily enough if you have $250 to $450 to spare.
