I saw it in Japan and am Japanese. The reason why we like this one is the long lines. This is a more political parody for us some people who live here. Showing a relationships between politicians and bureaucrats,,,,etc. Also, the many scenes I felt as if I had seen it before. That was from the 2011 Japan earthquake, Tsunami and the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. How our government acted. Some of the jokes and parodies can not be translated.So many words are used so in order to catch my native language with so many political terminologies. I needed to see this movie twice. This Godzilla is so enjoyable for even non Godzilla fans in Japan. This film was produced for more domestic market. Without knowing those inside political situations and layers, this Shin Godzilla film would be a bit hard to enjoy it as the original intention.
@marumarusensei18 жыл бұрын
Redhairdo welcome. I hope you will enjoy the film to set one more layer of your imagination the based on what I said here. Thank you. My uncle worked Toho in 40's till 1975 and he named it as Gojira in 1954 then when it was reproduced for the US market, it was spelled as Godzilla
@mrmackellar33378 жыл бұрын
marumarusensei1 your pretty insightful but putting political stuff in a Godzilla movie is asinine.
@marumarusensei18 жыл бұрын
Aaron It is not asinine. The original one in 1954 started that. But it was very implicitly. The many secens reminded us the moment of Tokyo carpet bombings. And Godzilla was bone becuase H bomb. But they never intended to produce anti American film but anti war film. Godzilla was the ultimate victim besides the victims of people. This one as well. They never explicitly make it as a political film but this Shin Godzilla capitalized on the political situation and its current issues in Japan after the Tsunami and the nuclear facility in Fukushima. If you don't like it, just ignore those layers. I have never seen the subtitle for the film, I do not know how it works. Since so many words are spoken, it would be almost impossible to put everything on the screen. The reason why Shin Godzilla got its popularity beyond the traditional Godzilla fans is becasue the script is intresting. That why I said this movie was produced targeted a domestic market. The same way as a 1954 version was modified to 1956 version for the US market. This one might do better as well if keeps Godzilla secens then drama part could be reproduced to simplify for a pure monster film.
@deletedwaffles8 жыл бұрын
I felt the parodying of politics was a good take on this Godzilla film. It was to the point where it just felt like you were watching a political thriller and Godzilla was just the problem they had to deal with. Replace him with a tsunami, a terrorist attack, or an earthquake and these politicians would most likely have done the exact same thing with all the countless decision making and proposing new bills. It was pretty enjoyable.

The director is Hideaki Anno, famous for Evangelion and this film has a lot of his style in it along with Shirou Sagisu, his friend and great composer of Evangelion and many other great works. Anno is the Tarantino of Japan, he loves violence, blood, over the top action and always includes references of all his previous works, especially Evangelion, and the most prominent one in Shin Godzilla is the track 'EM20', a homage to 'Decisive Battle' of Evangelion. In order to fully appreciate Shin Godzilla and his other works, you'll need to watch every other work he has done before. Besides film references and homages, alot of the cultural context in Shin Godzilla is hard for Western audiences to understand. Anyway this is easily in the top 5 of my favourite Godzilla movies.

I never realised people in USA were THAT unused to subtitles. It's funny to hear all their complaints about it, cause I know exactly what they mean, except I'm so used to it cause literally 90% of movies/shows are subtitled here. Subtitles haven't been a problem for me since I was like 7, heh.

Kallo Skull What country do you live in and what language do you speak? I have never watched a movie with subtitles
@KalloSkull8 жыл бұрын
Aaron Evans I live in Finland. Pretty much every non-Finnish show/movie, apart from a few children's ones, are subtitled over here. Back when I was a kid in the 90s, even most kids' cartoons (such as Batman TAS and the like) were subtitled, and only big animated movies like Disney's used to get dubbed.
@stoltobot8 жыл бұрын
Kallo Skull I saw a cool movie about a troll from Finland. Of course it had subtitles. Which I had to read in Japanese because of my wife. In Japan dubs are usually for kids and subs are for adults, mostly because of the kanji of the dialogue being above the 6th grade level. Nevertheless, they are usually completely different to the original audio.

Yo James, food for thought, Anno the director basically ripped the plot and quite literally the music from his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion. That composition work you complimented is Shiro Sagisu who not only worked on evangelion, but ported his original song decisive battle which was used in eva to score similar scenes. I think it worked extremely well in this setting and I'm glad you and Mike liked it, but I think it's important to know that the divergence from the typical Godzilla movie comes from the fact that Anno's directorial influence had such a massive effect on the plot direction. The man literally retold the operation to destroy Ramiel, but with Godzilla instead. Thanks for the great videos.

I feel like this movie (and of course the original) is for Godzilla movies what Dr. Strangelove is for war movies. Breathtaking visuals but at the core it´s a tongue-in-cheek parody of a terrible real life event. It doesn´t mock the victims of those real life events but rather the people at the top that cause the events.

I liked the 2014 version. I really don't see the point of making it just like a Toho version, Toho can do that just fine on their own and they are good at it. I like that there are a couple of different versions and styles And I enjoy both of them. (as long as they don't go mental again and make it completely different like the 1998 version). Looking forward to Godzilla King of Monsters and any sequel to Shin Godzilla.

Nice video review guys. Big thing I liked about this was the mention of theme songs/medleys. We all connect to themes and songs and catchy advertising crap. It's a shame that too many movies forego the themes thinking they're worn out, old, etc. Akira Ifukube's themes are so integral to the G films, it wouldn't be the same without them (save a few from Heisei era in which they had new music entirely which ended up being really good).
@DylanRocket8 жыл бұрын
There was only one Heisei Godzilla movie that didn't use an Ifukube theme which was The Return of Godzilla. Biollante and Spacegodzilla both used some Ifukube themes.

You have to hand it t Hideki Anno, the creator of Gunbuster, Wings of Honnimese and Evangelion for putting this film together. The film is more relevant today, given the current COVID19 situation and the world's governments poor response to the disaster in the same way the Japanese gov't's poor response to Godzilla. I'm honestly glad they didn't put another monster in this movie. The story had a clear message to tell that would only make sense with one monster. Another one would have been overkill and ruined the point they were trying to convey. Godzilla IS the force of nature, in a sense he's the revenge for how the government poorly acted during 3 devastating catastrophes. An earthquake, Tsunami, and a meltdown of a nuclear power plant. Godzilla are all three of those catastrophes in this movie, to push the commentary on the government.
