My God, Luke Kelly's back in the shape of Daori. Incredible, what a voice!
@Chris-qt5cb4 ай бұрын
Why Luke Kelly? No offence. But c'mon . Give the man the credit he deserves. Why compare him? Completely different singer. Huge talent in his own right. The constant deification of Kelly is self defeating.

Daoiri Farrel doesn't disappoint. The man is a genius of the lute and the Irish tune. I just listened to Paul Brady's genius rendition of this song, which really is magic, and having never heard a different one, went looking. Sure enough, I find this gem!

Came by Mr Farrell work via the video of him having a hoolie in the airport departure lounge. Blooming excellent! Love the song which I have sung by Pontchartrain....but no Bonny Creole girls in attendance sadly! It’s lovely though. I will looking to see Mr Farrell as soon as lockdown eases.

I first learned this tune as "The Lily of the West". Curious how an Irish lad came to be singing about a "creole gal" in Louisiana.

Wow! Who was the female that could be just barely heard? She was doing a great job singing along.

I noticed that too. The woman can sing, whoever she is.

I agree! She should have been up there too.

It was on a bright March morning, I bid New Orleans adieu. And I took the road on down to Jackson town, my fortune there to renew. I cursed all foreign money, no credit there could I gain. And it filled my heart with a longing for the lakes of Pontchartrain. Well I stepped on board of a railroad car beneath the morning sun. And I rode the roads until evening, and I laid me down again All strangers they are no friends to me, 'til a dark girl towards me came. And I fell in love with a Creole girl, by the lakes of Pontchartrain. Well I says me pretty Creole girl "Oh my money here's no good. And if it weren't for the alligators, I'd sleep outside in the woods." "Oh you're welcome here kind stranger, our house it is very very plain. But we never turned a stranger out by the lakes of Pontchartrain." So she took me into her mammy's house, and she treated me there very well. And the hair upon her shoulders in jet black ringlets befell. Oh but to try and paint her beauty I'm sure it will be in vain. So handsome was that Creole girl By the lakes of Pontchartrain. Well I asked her if she'd marry me, "Oh no this would never ever be." She had got her old lover, and he was far out at sea. And she said that she would wait there for him, oh and true she would remain. Until he'd return to his Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain. And its fare thee well my Creole girl, oh I never will see you anymore. And I'll ne'er forget your kindness and the cottage down by the shore. Oh and at each social gathering a flowing glass I will drain. And I'll drink a help to that Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain. Oh and drink a help to that Creole girl by the Lakes of Pontchartrain.

Only way it could have been better is if the drunk girl singing along would have been quiet

That lady singing really wants to be on stage. Is that poor form in Ireland?
@charlesnelson51873 жыл бұрын
A tad closer to the original melody would be better. Songs like these stand on thier own two feet. They don't need unnecessary ornamentation or embellishment, they are meant to be sung by generation after generation. (just a friendly tip)
@pog1002 жыл бұрын
I'm sure two of the finest folk musicians in the world, completely bound up in the tradition, will appreciate your tip. Whoever you are.

Lute and Mandolin poor choice for this great song - too tinny and noisy and distract from the proper cadence of the piece Daoire is a fine singer all the same but not suited to this song.
@theondebray2 жыл бұрын
Just heard Daoiri sing this solo / live, does a wonderful job. The sound in this clip is not good, far to much treble, agreed, disappointing, but not Daoiri's fault here.

You don't do this song justuce Daoiri, stretching the words and too much folky nhaaa, it doesn't suit it..check out Greg Page
