One of the most historically accurate non-documentary film ever produced. Everything they say in this film is absolutely true and real. While they dramatized the character interactions, if a character opens their mouth and speaks, its absolutely true.

I watched this in theater. At the end when we see all the places abuse was reported, you could hear the gasps and people crying. It was heartbreaking and powerful.

Thanks for doing this. I grew up in Boston and went to church every weekend and father Geogan was one of my priests. I was in high school, I guess I was too old for him but I know people who were affected by him.

My parents were raised Catholic in Manhattan in the ‘50s-‘60s. My mom’s uncle, a surrogate father figure as her dad died before she started school, was a priest; I was told there was an understanding that she and her siblings were off limits because of their uncle being a priest… meaning that it was openly known that attacks were happening with children and accepted unless kids were fortunate enough to have special standing (which is absolutely sickening/appalling). I saw Spotlight in theaters as a lapsed Catholic and was just full of rage the whole way through but also appreciation for those victims, advocates, and press who pursued ending the cover ups and for the fine film making that ensures more will know the story and the need for the vanishing independent investigative press. I definitely recommend All The President’s Men which, like Spotlight, doesn’t have nearly enough reactors watching/posting reactions to it. And I think it’s also worth considering that without the uncovering of the full scope of the abuse 20+ years ago, we may never have learned about what happened in the Boy Scouts, the Southern Baptist churches, or had the groundwork for press coverage of the Me Too movement. This investigation laid the groundwork for many more victims of institutional coverups of abuse to be believed.

The scene with the phones ringing off the hook is FUCKING HORRIFYING! It tells us that for every victim who came forward, there were two, three, four, six, ten, who knows how many out there that never did. HORRIFYING!
@nevaladder
@nevaladder 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. A very low percentage of victims actually come forward to report a crime. Compound that with the coverup and intimidation and general culture in religious cities and countries. For every person that picked up the phone, there are dozens or hundreds of people who didn't.

@@nevaladderWhat's worse is, this is just the victims of predators within the Catholic church. There are thousands of others who preyed on children who weren't in the Church. Babysitters, teachers, coaches, doctors, neighbors, aunts, uncles. Older siblings.

I live 15 minutes from the city of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia - one of the places listed at the end of the movie. One person who was instrumental in uncovering the abuses of Catholic priests locally was a journalist from the Newcastle Herald named Joanne McCarthy. A classmate of mine produced a presentation for an assignment on her work (which also covered a story she reported on regarding an abuse case of school students in a Catholic school neighbouring the suburb where I eventually went to high school). She's a local hero in my opinion.

Keaton did not bury the story - the lawyer was saying that there was enough evidence out there that if Keaton was paying more attention he would have found the story eariler
@hdzmiriam
@hdzmiriam Жыл бұрын
I'd say he did bury the story, but not out of malice. Like all reporters, it was their internal bias or prejudices, or beliefs... who knows, and it was only until an outsider said... let's pursue this, that they opened their eyes. That's why they thought it was not important at the beginning, but little by little, they all recognized their role and the magnitude of the problem.... In interviews, the director said, there are no evil people here, they are all good journalists.
@grasshopperye3593
@grasshopperye3593 11 ай бұрын
He did bury the story, he had leads, he had the position and power to order a follow through, and there were outside people sending him evidence--the victim support group guy from years ago, even the lawyer, who he tried to blame later on. They say themselves they buried the story in metro, and in the beginning of the movie, they were going to do that again. I think it's important to the story that Keaton did bury it earlier on, bc it's clear he didn't do it to be nefarious, but bc he didn't take it seriously, and yeah probably had some internal biases. I think that's what makes that scene in the office powerful, he had to admit he's part of the institutions that failed to catch this, that had the opportunity but looked away. It doesn't make him horrible, it makes him human, and it's an important reality of the struggle of uncovering abuses of power like this.

Two major items were sent to the Globe that were buried. 1) The 20 priest names that MacLeish sent to Robby, who buried it in Metro, and 2) the box of material that Saviano sent to the Globe that was denied interest. This box was probably sent to either Ben(the managing editor) or the previous editor who retired at the start of the movie. My bet is on Ben.

Ben Bradlee Jr, who oversaw the 4 from the Spotlight team, is the son of Ben Bradlee, who was the editor at the Washington Post who oversaw Woodward and Bernstein, the reporters who uncovered the Watergate scandal. He was told the identity of “Deep Throat” and, in his own words, he “never told a soul.” Of course, Mark Felt, who was “Deep Throat,” came out in Vanity Fair in 2008, 2009.

This is one of my favorite movies. I love all the research they conduct and that they don't need more evil, the Church is more than enough. It's just good people being brave enough to do their job. I've seen several interviews with the directors and real journalists. There's a really good video on how the movie represents investigative journalism.

I watched this movie for the first time about 6 months ago, I have now watched it over ten times. It's weirdly become something I put on when I want something that I know is good, and need background noise. I've ordered the book based on the reporting, and very much looking forward to reading it. I was not raised Catholic, not even christian, since I live in Sweden, which is very secular. To me, the authority just granted to the church, especially in those days when the movie takes place, is obscene. I've done a fair amount of research into scandals of this kind, and this movie winning best picture really shows that this kind of story deserves to be told, and the organizations responsible needs to be held accountable.

The tradition of clerical continence developed into a practice of clerical celibacy (ordaining only unmarried men) from the 11th century onward among Latin Church Catholics and became a formal part of canon law in 1917. This law of clerical celibacy does not apply to Eastern Catholics.

I read that the first victim that Mike Rezendes interviewed passed away from a drug overdose some time after all the abuse stories came out on the paper. Sad that he had to go through all that. Last time I read the about the Spotlight department was that it folded into the Metro department of Boston Globe about a few years back. I wonder if Spotlight department is still an independent department, answerable only to the chief editor.

Would you be willing to watch 'Oranges and Sunshine'? Similar vein. This is about British children of low socio-economic families who were deported to Australia under the impression their parents were dead and would be given a lovely nice new future. Instead they put them in terrible group homes who mistreated them and made them pay their debts for their parents' sins. It's a huge historical event.

@@RKnightsIt's a good movie. It's sort of a precursor to All The Presidents Men. One of the catalysts that made Watergate happen was the publication of the Pentagon Papers. Which is the subject of The Post. One could very easily watch The Post and then watch All The Presidents Men. A good series to watch about Watergate is Gaslit. It's a bit better than The Whitehouse Plumbers.

just a thought for next time when you are already familiar with a film, I wish that the movie was able to unroll itself rather than the outcomes being shared with the other person within the few first minutes. It could have been that they did not publish, but you already said that they did, and that it was a national story and that the number of vicitims is high. It may be better if we could actually experience the story with them- love your channel and your movies selections

Forgive us, we knew this was a national story and that this paper was the reason it became public. So, we knew it was going to happen. Kinda like knowing the Titanic was going to sink. I like how your visions changed after the movie. Before the movie, your knowledge of the actors playing is, to me, absurd, remembering only men-in-tights/spandex movies like Hulk and Batman, instead of Mark Ruffalo being great in Collateral or Zodiac and Michael Keaton being great in Live from Baghdad or Birdman. And the remark of one of you, you thought of becoming a priest once.(Being called a priest, to me, nowadays is like a curseword/something shamefull) After the movie, you feel sorry for people whose favourite movie is fast&furious, rightly saying that great movies do not have to contain action or men in tights/action-heroes/stuff from comic books. Your perspective has changed, Spotlight did that to you. And to me, it's a blessing that it did.

I dont know how you cant "knock on the Catholic Church" after fully watching and understanding what they facilitated for centuries and also still facilitate today. The Catholic Church doesn't need ANY protection from p3dophilia accusations when the amount of evidence collected has been so huge and well documented that you can easily say that they are a harmful institution and deserve a good "knocking" for allowing and perpetuating LITERAL CHILD R@PE
