Hail and farewell "Captain Karl". You warned us years ago. Too bad nobody listened...

I got here because of Facebook. It's really cool to hear this version. I first heard this song in Germany, on Armed Forces Radio in late '86 or '87. I bought the album a little bit later. Still have it. The "avarice and greed" lyrics must have gotten added later. I didn't know what that word meant in '86. I had to look it up...in a real dictionary! :-o Thanks for a great song-and increasing my vocabulary! :)

Very cool Karl, thanks much for posting. WP's show in Seattle on the Bang tour in 1993 was one of the best I ever saw - It was at the Moore Theater, you opened I think with Is It Like Today followed by Ship of Fools, and the place went nuts, with people up dancing through most of the show. You guys were playing really hot and I remember you smiling and laughing throughout. A great memory - "Pure Pop for Party People" as the saying was back then.

I remember the first time I heard the final cut of Ship of Fools on Radio One, it would have been about 1986 when I was 16 years of age. I was just completely blown away Karl! So much so that I tracked down where you were playing live and my best mate Jen and I travelled from Cambridge to see you at The Astoria, probably the best gig I've ever, ever been to! S of F is still as relevant today as it ever was. Thanks for sharing this embryonic version! x

I love it - neat to hear what developed into the final song. It's all there but stands very well (beautifully I would add) on its own. Thank you for all this gorgeous music!

Really enjoy hearing the writing process unfold and how it formed into the final product, inspiring to me cause im kind of a perfectionist as well, early versions of stuff reminds me that it takes work to get to where the song belongs.

I've been a fan of this song and band since the 80's. Although I've heard several versions of this song, I can't remember hearing this one. I like it will listen again. Words and meaning is so relevant today. Thanks y'all!!

Ah, how amazing. One of my all-time favorite songs, so incredibly evocative in its final form, and here's a glimpse at its ... evolution? ancestry? gestation? Whatever you want to call it, it's really something to get to hear it with a different feel to it, after all these years. Cheers for this, and for all the rest, Karl.

Really enjoyed getting an insight into what would become a classic song. Love how the final take got edgier and darker, the sail me to save me was the making of the song for me. On a second play through, this first take holds it's own, brilliant stuff Karl.

Fluid treatment - saturated in reverb, drowning in the vision, splashing around, man overboard from the ship of fools, and the full cargo yet to be delivered. This would be an awesome lounge treatment just redoing the vocals. But it would have to be an inflatable lounge in a swimming pool. I really like this. Thanks for sharing . Love the solarized cargo ship.
