@@TaylorExchangethis makes sense to me bc when it gets thicker it also gets shorter and narrower by the same amount. only thing that doesnt make sense is measuring the flap to bc that gets folded over.

As I understand it, all packages must have the actual dimensions so they can pack the trucks correctly. The machines sort them and allocate the right amount to each bin/truck/van etc. So if you have 71 packages that are 3" thick and you are only counting 1", you are shorting them by taking up too much space, and you will probably get backcharged at some point.

I have often wondered the shipping question, myself. Ask 10 different eBay agents and 10 different postal workers, and there isn't a lot of consistency. What I can say about that depth measurement is if you choose a poly mailer on Pirateship the third dimension doesn't even show up, only length and width. It states that any envelope over 18" in any one direction must be shipped as a "box" package type where you'll need to enter that 3rd dimension measurement. I can only assume Pirateship is a reputable source and is in good standing with USPS. For me, this seems to be the most concrete info I can find. I have had adjustments on rare occasion, one, years ago, when my scale was on its last legs and gave inaccurate reads. I quickly replaced it and the only thing since then has been the very rare overpayment, in which case I receive a credit. That my 2 cents. :)

We ship with 10x13 mailers too. I close them so they are smaller than that. 8x10 as a rule. I put 2 ins if it's over 1 in and that doesn't raise the price. It's the 8x10 or less that saves me $1 each time as a rule. We are east coast and I do this when it's Texas or west of there.

i've always ship this way. i squeeze everything. for the most part if you keep it at 10/10/3 on pants is the cheapest. I always measure the highest point on the thickness of the packege. most pants are about 3 inches I know a lot about the cubic shipping and its a lot to learn. I learned the hard way.

@@TaylorExchange I just shipped a size 14 cowboy boots for like $8 just by making it under a cubic foot. after a cubic foot you have to do it like fed ex and do dimension shipping. cubic foot is like 1700 inches or so. just click on the learn more button on ground advantage and the first paragraph explains it. Its length times width times height and its 12/12/12 and after that you have to do like fed ex. I only have had one charge back on my shipping in 2 years for a 13 oz from a 8 oz so like 80cents or so. hope this helps. the more you can save on shipping the better you can do a cheaper service for your customers too. I have min set to 0-4 oz at one price 5-8 at one price 9-12 at one price and 13oz to 1pound at one price. once over one pound really depends on the size of package. try to keep it under 12 in long will help you on pants and hoodies

Found out that I can Frankenstein one of the 30x8x8 into a 30x4x13 to ship a tennis racket for just over $13 with a weight of 3lbs...one use of cheaper stock boxes..a 30x6x15 was just under $10 at the mailbox store...a savings of over $7 for the box and even more on reduced box weight..even the box scorer at minimum setting does 2" so perfect for slicing and dicing.

I do the 1 inch thickness on ground advantage. But sometimes I will trick ebay. I will fill out the weight measurements, put 1 inch thickness, click ground advantage and it will give you the cost for the package. Then I will go back to the thickness and put in 2 or 3" and the cost wont change. You kind of have to trick it for some reason 😁 Hope that makes sense.

The eBay shipping module is not setup for poly mailer measurements and if your using 1 inch its not correct. You need to use the actual measurements including the actual thickness. Soft pack does have a separate way to calculate cubic rate which is length + Width but again eBay isn't setup for that. I will try to share the link to it.

@@TaylorExchange Sean also do not use the dimensions of the empty poly mailer for length and width or you're going to overpay. When I put a small pair of jeans in a 9x12 poly mailer I close it up tight the measurements are typically under 8x10x2 which will ship at the .10 cubic rate. Typically if the actual measurements of the item is larger than 8x10x2 it is going to go up to .20 cubic rate. Based on my experience, the three shirts you were shipping should end up in the .20 cubic rate and the two mens jeans will end up being in the .30 rate.

Unless it's really noticeable I don't think they check packages for size just the actual weight compared to what you put on the label. I never got a price adjustment for cubic, only weight.

I've been charged for wrong dimensions. They don't shut down your account but if your package is randomly selected when they inspect you can expect to get a message that your postage was adjusted. Cause 6 inches isn't 1.

i know you definitely cannot put 1 inch for a poly m that is more than 1 inxh. If its close you can probably get away with it most of the time. Usps does extra shipping charge adjusrmebts but they charge the ebay rate and not the standard rate.

I use 1” for every package even with a small box in a bag. Sellers are leaving money on the table by not doing that.

How much is dial-up? And what speeds can you get?
