Ever since I saw ManlyBadassHero play the original Shipwrecked, I’ve been pretty obsessed with this series. You can quickly fall down rabbit holes that the final game only hints of, and I love that. Just secrets upon secrets upon secrets and so on. You probably already know this but Squeaks already has run a full on analog horror arg with these characters a few years ago. It goes into the deeper history of Broadside itself, something that we honestly only get a peak at through this game. Even the original version contain many secrets and answers that the full release doesn’t even cover, such as the question of what was going on with Brandon and what the hell are the Starlings. And having seen the original release, this final version really felt extremely nostalgic to me, I mean the plot was basically the same but only ever going to layer 2. I could gush on and on about this series but I don’t want to spoil anything for others and I even know i don’t fully know everything yet. Squeaks really has done an amazing job creating this one of a kind experience that I’m sad I won’t be able to relive, (well accept for the potential dlc, which introducing it as an in-universe rom hack is fucking genius btw) so hats off to you.

The creator has even said that they made Shipwrecked 64 because they were dissatisfied with how his original ARG turned out and wanted to make it “good again.” They’re still canon, but he doesn’t like those old videos anymore. He initially deleted them but due to fan response, he put them back up which I’m glad he did because, while I never knew about any of this stuff until Shipwrecked 64, I’m very passionate about media preservation and archiving so good on him.
@troin392510 ай бұрын
Even though it’s a terrible comparison because they’re nothing alike, the lore of this series kind of reminds me of the Scythe Saga Universe with how the game is based on pre-existing lore and the mascots being biological creatures (like in Happy’s Humble Burger Farm). However, the lore is nowhere near as insane or old, it takes place on Earth, there’s no other games like 80s slasher inspired ones, the lore hasn’t had any retcons/rewrites about what’s considered canon anymore and this series doesn’t have any zombie apocalypse, alien invasions or some kind of eldritch supernatural involvement.
@Mike142649 ай бұрын
@@troin3925 yeah, like, there are a lotta notions to the people in-universe that we lack - while to us, these are mascots that we never even heard of, in-universe they're beloved icons with a large history for their foundation. It's like you assumed that the long lost game you found was about some random mascot of the time that never got their spot in the limelight, only to feel total whiplash when you learn you've actually just been living under a rock all this time and the mascot _is_ extremely well known - it's the game itself that was lost, and for other reasons that didn't have anything to do with lack of popularity.
@Mike142649 ай бұрын
Yeah, this game is _beeg._ I think there's even some codes and secrets folks haven't even seen before yet. Also, one thing folks may already know about Blot - he actually camouflages as one of the barrels, and he slowly forms into a rabbit using random assets and textures... until reaching his finalized form, ready to chase you. One thing you may _not_ know however, is that you can hit said barrel to prevent Blot from spawning! ...and another thing you also might not know. You know how all Starlings are made using someone's revived corpse? And we know the identities of the main four? Well, Blot's corpse... ...is Rex Broadside. The creator of Blot and Bucky. You find out about this in other ARG videos before Shipwrecked 64, but the whole Starling project was started _because_ he died - in order to stay ahead of the curve in the animation biz, the execs wanted to revive the creator of the company. And, well, apparently they did. Despite the fact Rex was ashamed of what the company had become. Despite the fact he hated what how big it had gotten, how isolated it made him from his family, how fabricated the image of him had become. He was isolated at the top of the company, while the people running it all were just out of reach, further twisting his creation into something he didn't want.

My main criticism of the game is that it keeps showing the same 3 murder scenes over and over Like you get "flashes" of the murders after failing minigames, get the same murder scenes after a certain point, and then you get the same scenes in the zip that has been downloaded. I know that it is the main point of the game, in lore the game was made to expose the murders, but, am I really the only one who is super curious about the starling project? What is it, like an occult thing? Scifi? What even is this? The murder scenes are cool and all, but what about the other aspects of the lore? It would be cool if the evidence got more and more explicit as you go deeper instead of flashing the same murder avi's over and over again

@gayrurumon10 ай бұрын
"Bucky feels sublime to control" does he? Does he _really_? Imo the platforming is pretty janky at times, which to be fair, was true of many Nintendo 64 platformers that inspired it... but I don't think any modern game going for an N64 style needs to be strive for accuracy in that particular regard. It definitely could, and probably should, be better. And as much as I do really like a lot about this game, that's far from the only issue I have with it. Shipwrecked 64 is not very good at conveying to the player what they're supposed to do at times. And I'm not talking about the later ARG aspects and puzzles. To an extent, those are *supposed* to be a pain in the arse to figure out, I get that. But even just when it come to accessing that part of the game: As far as I've seen the game doesn't give you any hints, not even vague ones, that you're supposed fail the minigames to start accessing the spooky shit. It seems the game expects you to either find out by failing them naturally (which is unlikely, since most of them are very easy), or just "figure it out somehow". Which I'm not sure how many people will be able to do without looking it up, or having seen/played the demo before this. Worse: you have to fail them _more than once_ before anything odd starts happen. This makes it entirely conceivable that a player might fail a minigame, see that nothing seems to happen, and conclude "hmm, I guess that's not what I'm supposed to do" and just move on. I think the minigames get harder after the first failure to try and counteract this (which is kind of smart), but they don't get impossible until you've failed twice already, so this is still an issue. Shipwrecked also has a problem where it seems to seek to waste the player's time at every opportunity. Again: this is accurate to the time period, but not in a good way. Minigames like Olive's, Stumbler's, and Wulf's drag on for much longer than such simple gameplay can sustain. Olive's is the worst offender whether you aim to fail or beat it, and while there is a hidden way to reduce the timer in the case of the former, the game once again fails to convey this to the player. But as mundane as these parts get, they're not truly awful... unless you're trying to get the good ending. I'll put this simply: the volcano platforming part, where you get one try to beat it before the game give you the bad ending and deletes your save? Bullshit. Complete bullshit. There is absolutely no reason for the game to erase 40 or more minutes of progress just because you didn't successfully wrestle Bucky through a long, awkward to control, checkpointless platforming segment fast enough on your first try. Or second try. Or third or fourth try, because it's hard to practice and improve at a segment when you have to start over and play boring mingames before you can make another attempt. At least on the 1997 version I think you can skip straight to Stumbler's minigame, though just replaying that one still wastes a lot more time than I consider reasonable. But say player is going for it on the 2023 version, either because they're avoiding the spooky stuff, they think the ending might be different between the two versions, or just because it's the first selected option on the menu. Then it's a nightmare, because you have to beat _all_ the minigames each time you start over before Stumbler is accessible, then beat _his_ game before J.D. will appear to offer you another shot at the volcano. It's *maddening*. Forcing you redo everything doesn't add to the challenge in any meaningful way, and even if it did, that segment's already hard enough with Bucky's floaty jumps and dubious ability to grab ledges when he need to. No, it's just utterly disrespectful of the player's time, in a game that already requires a huge investment of time and energy in order to discover the true story. And in this day and age, where free time is a rare and precious resource for the average person, I consider that to be one of the worst sins a game can commit. I know I just wrote a lot of word complaining, but I really do like Shipwrecked 64. It's charming, but also very unsettling when it decides to let the mask slip. The story is interesting, and is revealed piecemeal in way that I personally enjoy a lot. It demonstrates a much better understanding of pacing and building tension than many games in its genre, and I hope more mascot horror games take note and inspiration from how it presents its story. And yet, it still has some prominent flaws that I find difficult to look past. I hope the developer continues making games and improving their craft, or even improving this game with updates, since that seem to be their plan anyway. They're very talented, and I look forward to seeing their future work.

@testerwulf33579 ай бұрын
@@gayrurumon Could be you're just not used to the controls, people who've played games from this era and gotten good at them probably have no problems whilst people not used to the janky old styled controls would struggle as they aren't quite as smooth as modern video games; just takes some time to get used to something different don't worry! I can't say it's that difficult to realize you have to fail the minigames for the other ending..if winning leads to one, you'd assume loosing would as well and grind out losses to have it happen (the dialogue for the character even changes when you loose which could make you want to try again to see if it changes again until you finally fail for real) especially as there's literally nothing else to do..there's only loosing as a second option. I agree though this and the hitting Olive to low the timer could of been conveyed better but they're fairly easy to stumble on by accident (in Olives case it doesn't hurt you if you don't know it, just takes longer)
