Shireen - UMAI
Directed by Lynette Darleen van der Giessen
Director of Photography: Daphyd Sens
UMAI appears on Shireen's first full-length album MATRIARCH, which released on 3.11.17.
After months of luminous studio recording, filming, editing, reviewing, some more editing, finetuning, and having some serious fun, we proudly present our new music video of UMAI! It is the first release of our upcoming album, which will take some more time, recording and editing. Feel free to share, and keep checking us out! Many thanks to our fantastic crew and all our extras for helping us make this happen!
Lyrics:
If I would give you my clear skies, If I would give you all golden fields of grain.
Strong legs, a tireless heart. An ocean as still as a lake.
Would you still worship and pray, and not forget my name: "Umai".
Instead I’ll give you my storm, I’ll give you my hail.
I will tear out trees, sweep up the seas and distroy your fields.
And you’ll reach for the sky, but in this mud you’ll die.
And you will pray, when lightning illuminates your face.
If you are a sweet child. Never scream to get your way.
I will forget you lying there. I’ll sleep for a million days,
and not hear your prayers: “Umai”.
Instead I’ll give you my storm, I’ll give you my hail.
I will tear out trees, sweep up the seas and distroy your fields.
And you’ll reach for the sky, but in this mud you’ll die.
And you will pray, when lightning illuminates your face.
You will pray: “Umai”.

Yup - sure is. This popped up in my feed a cpl yrs back - pretty sure it was during the COVID lockdown. But that’s when I decided that I really enjoyed her voice & their style. She reminds me of Heilung’s vibe. That tribal, Viking magic vibe. Admittedly tho this vid could’ve been a lot better imo. I feel she could’ve taken us on an excursion- where the video literally takes us out of ourselves. She already had us there til they pulled up in an old Chevy Rabbit or an early 80’s Dodge lol. That yanked me out and put me right back in my seat lol. Shame bcz it all could’ve been done without exceeding whatever budget she had at the time.

I literally spent the last two and a half hours trying to find this song, I listened to it more than a year ago, and it just came to my mind, but the only thing I could remember is that the name of the song started with U and it had a female vocalist. After two hours and some minutes I remembered that the song was the name of a deity, so it started the quest to find the name of deities that start with U, around 20 minutes reading lots of pages on the web, my eyes just glanced at >Umai

@touchnotthiscat "This guy isn't letting his poor experiences turn him into someone who hates or abuses women." I'm not so sure about that. He sounds an awful lot like an abuser. No female person has ever said something nice to him *ever*? *All* women he has *ever met* have treated him "poorly" and he's still waiting to "find a pleasant" one? Either his mother is keeping him locked up in the basement since his birth OR he does not apply the same standards to women as he does to men. He's most definitively talking about *sexual* attention he thinks women owe him, not just the basic human respect people usually have for each other. IF he's not then, oh boy, that would mean that every woman he's ever met literally hates his guts -- and we'd have to wonder what he does to have that effect. Either way, he's already blaming "the bad guys who turned the good ones bad" for his future actions. Tbh, he sounds an awful lot like misogynist mass murderer Elliot Roger who similarly called himself an "ideal magnificent gentleman" before murdering six people and himself, or like Roger's fan Alek Minassian who has 10 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder. Let's make no mistake, the Incel/Redpill/Manosphere community is *not* a bunch of harmless young men who got unlucky in their love life, it's an ideological cult that regularly turns spineless people like Derek into domestic terrorists. "Nice Guys" are not nice.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umay Umay is the goddes of life and death, fertility, mothers, children, nature, the earth. She is the bestower and keeper of the "life soul" of all beings, she can grant it, take it as she sees fit. Disrespecting mothers, children, the earth and nature are sure ways to make her take lives and she can convince the winds of fate to help her. Her mythology is pretty cool and quite diverse depending on which ethnic groups' stories you listen to.

I get the feeling that this song portrays the karma cycle of 'what comes around goes around'. The quakes of war and hatred returned by the tremors of the earth, the poisons filling the waters becoming our slow-killing sustenance, and so on. It's because she is dressed like a "dragon-woman". Notice the scales on her legs; the horns; a reptile miniature on her boots; a claw-like ring; a tail on her back; face paint.
@TomatoAbe
@TomatoAbe 6 жыл бұрын
IlIlIlIl To be fair, only the dragon "tail-oring" (yuk-yuk-yuk!) and the lizard-heels are shown in the first minute, and I didn't even see the rad heel mods until after this comment. In fact, my first impression of "draconic theme" in the video also came from the (really cool IMO) tail motif of the cloak/dress. I'd also argue that the leg scales could be pretty easily dismissed as just decorative jewelry, unless you already know what symbolism to be looking for, and the horned hairstyle could be interpreted a few different ways as well. The same could be said of the face paint, and I straight-up couldn't even really see the ring well enough to draw meaning from it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What the heck?! Ol' Barcode up there was crapping all over this video a few months back before I posted my opinion in response! I happen to see the comments when it comes up in my music playlist, and now they're not just gushing about it, but also using my points defending it to do so, and YT shows their comment as older, but not as edited? Dude, I'm not even mad somebody changed their mind, but freakin' come on. Ugh. Y'know what, have a shot if you're inclined (I am,) and just hope net neutrality will make it.

Can someone explain to me why someone like me finds this so calming and give me certain feelings of connectedness. And then also why some people find it scary and unappealing? It gets my "soul" going. Do we have souls? Or is it just our brains capable of so much but humankind hasn't even unlocked much of our brains potential. Help. Ps. My ancestors are Spanish and native Aztec peoples.

I've listened to the first 1:35 of this song for going on 4 years now at least a thousand times, just restarting it when it gets to that point. Just because I love the mental story it gives me and her voice is beautiful. But this is the first time realizing that the god she claims to be sounds a lot like how I used to feel about alcohol. Golden grain, strong legs/tireless heart, etc. It got me through the day at that point in my life, hell it WAS my life. Just something I thought was interesting, I doubt it was anything the artist was trying to convey with the music, it just happened to match. Edit: Warhammer edit -------- Come to think of it on another note, a Grey knight Astartes would definitely fight her. She's 100% a Chaos agent, demon or otherwise.
