In my opinion, if the SP3 was released now as the successor to LaFerrari in the "Big 6" and it only had 840hp with the performance numbers it does, people would absolutely laugh at how far the competition is ahead of that.
@Andy8x27 күн бұрын
As an actual recipient of an F80, let me tell you this. Would I want a V12? Yes, I am disappointed about the V6. In part because it does not impress me in the 296 due to its immense threshold lag - not enough drama compared to the V8's and V12's. But had they debuted the SP3 as the LaF successor, it would have been a no. Way too low on power, and way too low on new tech. Another reason why this V6 powerplant disappoints me, is because while V6 and hybrid is what we see in F1 racing and Le Mans, this drivetrain has ZERO to do with any of it. Merc did something clever by actually using a drivetrain that was lifted from the F1 car. This is just a more powerful version of what is found in the 296. What else I would have liked to see, was a smaller less powerful ICE but more hybrid power. Why? Because one of my gripes with both the 296 and SF90, is that the hybrid is so low on power compared to the ICE, that one does in fact not really feel that much in terms of an EV kick. I'd much rather have it be 50/50 and really get a hard EV kick for torque fill than what I worry will be the same issue with threshold lag in the 296 where nothing happens below 5500 rpm. Try and drive a 296 at 2000 rpm in 2nd gear an punch it. It will barely be able to break the tyres loose. Do the same in a 488, F8 or SF90, and it instantly lights them up. Having owned the Scud, Pista, F8, 488, 458 etc. I cannot recognize the idea that the 296 is more responsive, not in the slightest. I chose to stick with my F8 for this reason, and frankly I get more enjoyment driving a Puro than a 296 because of this boost threshold lag. Time will tell what the F80 will be like, but I'm hesitant.
@julesbarthomeuf90728 күн бұрын
I don't understand your point. You're saying the v12 isn't the technology from now but the thing is you can keep the v12 and add every technology you want after so it doesn't make sense. Ferrari just wants to make money and that's why they are preselling, moreover I feel like you're trying to be the devil's advocate for some reason maybe to get a future allocation. Am I wrong ? 🤔
@steven_taylor_28 күн бұрын
Ferrari doesn't want to add turbos to the v12 as it will ruin the appeal of that engine, adding hybrid system like electric motors will make the car heavier, so that's why the v6 was used. Also, all of their race cars are using the v6 engine, so there's that connection as well.
@Mufc_Kenny28 күн бұрын
I just deleted my previous comment and yes you are wrong. Rewatch the video as he answered your question. The V12s are in the GT cars while the V8 and V6 engines are lighter plus their track hypercar 499P already has a V6 as well as F1. He's a VIP client and going up which requires more cars and attending special events.
@Antonio8887028 күн бұрын
A smaller engine with as much or even more power... that's tech. On the passionate side, surely a V12 would be the obvious but Ferrari's hypercar has always been where Ferrari would put all of their top tech at the moment on a highly exclusive car. In the 80's it was carbon fibre on the F40, in the 90s it was indeed the V12 Engine on a "road-going F1 car", in the 2000s the top of F1's paddle shift technology on the Enzo and with the LaFerrari it was the hybrid system. Now in 2024, it is the F163 V6 engine seen on not only the 296 but also in the two-time Le Mans winner 499P...

That v12 is completely new compared to Ferrari's 20 year old or so v12. Ferrari themselves have admitted the v12 doesn't have more performance over their turbocharged v8 or v6 engines and they don't want to add turbos to it to ruin the appeal of a NA v12 engine. Also, the W1 will decimate the F80 if there was a v12 in the latter!

@@steven_taylor_ and yet Aston Martin was able to develop a new V12 for the Vanquish. Ferrari could have easily made a V12 by joining two of the existing V6s from the 296, same engine in the F80 and replace two of those electric motors. If the V6 was good and new enough to produce performance gains then two of them are only going to be an improvement. Instead Ferrari was lazy so they just slightly upgraded the performance of the 296 engine, slapped on a couple of additional e motors and called it a day. Edit: also don't forget that 12 Cilindri just came out recently and that had a V12, if Ferrari were so hell bent on performance they could have gone with a V6 there because it's more "efficient" and yet they didn't. And it's not like the F80 has so much performance gain that it's going to gap the likes of La Ferrari or SF90XX or anything. No. Shedding the V12 for some measly tenths of a second faster is illogical. The least they could have done was develop a new V12 around that V6 engine or just add two more cylinders and make a new V8, but of course that would mean they have to actually innovate and not lazily upgrade the 296 engine because it's more work

If the F80 had a 3.3L V6(94mm×79.25mm/100mm bore spacing), the "little V12" would be half of a 6.6L V12 with 990PS and 330PS from hybrid assist equaling 1320PS(1320ft =1/4 of a mile) as it's a heavier car than the McLaren W1 and a 9500rpm red line same as the V12...... One of assets the F80 has is a 285 on 10.5's(?) and a 345 on 13's(?), not only wider than th W1's but a 60mm width stagger vs a 70mm width stagger, but not having a 35% profile 285 front tyre means less of an ability to maintain traction around corners that are less than smooth, less gradual release of traction around corners, do not alow for stiffer suspension and will be greasy sooner from not having as much mass for the heat to distribute it's self through and surface area to dissipate the heat. But to compensate for some of these issues it has AWD, and for a street car a aesthetic(smaller front quarter pannel arches) and outward visibility(could the cockpit be 15mm higher) is important.

As for the comparison, the Senna isn't on the same level as the P1. This F80 is an equivalent hypercar pinnacle car for Ferrari, so the fact that it looks like it does simply isn't acceptable. It's not a track-focused crazy car that people don't understand, it's a V6-equipped street car that looks mediocre. I don't need hindsight to know that this car will be viewed as a regression to the LaFerrari's beautiful appearance.

You make a good point that when the LaFerrari first came out people hated on that car's styling - calling it derivative or insectoid-like or just straight up ugly. I remember all of that.
