Jason... I had an elderly mowing client last year, ask me to spray foam a hole in her tree. It required my ladder, so I brought it on our next mow. Using her materials and my equipment, took me about 30 minutes. I then mowed her lawn. She paid our normal amount for mowing, but nothing extra for the tree. A simple gesture of $5 would have went a long way with me, just to let me know my time is valuable... but nothing. It bothered me for several weeks. I finally had to release her from service as I didn't want hard feelings to fester. It does seem some of my older clients feel entitled to free and extra services.

The elderly are the most difficult to work for..I had one lady, not anymore, she would call me all the time about this and that, sending me text messages wondering where I was and have all sorts of crazy request. She lived in a million dollar home and she would act like she's struggling and complain about bills. Then one day she asked me to trim the hedges and I told her the price and she responded "ooooohh, I thought that was included with the mowing?" This lady lived in a mini castle with a double hedge row all the way around! Hell no! Needless to say we went our separate ways haha

Speaking of twigs in the yard, what about an after-storm condition, or just an old pecan tree with dead limbs in it that are constantly dropping sticks? You don't want them destroying your mower blade, so what do you do? If there are more than a few that are obviously visible which you can pick up by hand in 2 minutes, at what point do you charge extra? And how do you get them up? Rake the entire yard? That could take a long time, and if the grass is high, you wouldn't get them all cause they're down inside the grass and still dull the blade and tear up the housing.

I think every LCO runs into people like this every year. I just had a guy refuse to pay for a yard cleanup...had before and after pics (among other evidence). I got the cops involved because it is a criminal offense in GA to steal services. Less than 24 hours later I was payed online. The guy then left me a nastygram voicemail, but I rendered it irrelevant. Can't focus on the bad when there's too much good to be had.

As I am 59, my gut clenched a little when you said "the old". As you went on I realized that your business problems are very much like mine. I've been doing drywall since I was 16, but the differences are that age hasn't been the difference; it's attitude. The worst customer I've ever had was a preacher, and I have had a disproportionate number of problems from those of "the cloth". It is not a God problem, but more the attitude of arrogance. Some grow more arrogant with age, some with privilege. Just like you, I have strived to satisfy someone so much that I have had them sign-off a job after which I informed them not to call, or recommend me again. The times I have done this I have never regretted. I have had humble older folks, drinkers, gays, all races (I'm white) give a little extra. I have also walked away from homes that looked like museums; yeah, they're really going to want a drywall job done in here? Anyway, you seem to be very professional and will enjoy continued success. Thanks!

Got the same problem with old people in Minnesota. They are retired and have time to inspect every square inch of their lawn. I used to paint houses before getting into lawn care and it was the same deal. Was painting railings on a condo 3 stories up on a boom lift. This woman who looked 80 years old came up to the window and pointed out microscopic paint flecks on her window. I could barely see them. I don't know how she saw them. If you were back three feet from the window you couldn't tell they were there. I had to get my face almost up to the window just to see them. She sat there for 5-10 minutes pointing out these tiny specks on her window. This was about 10 years ago. It still amazes me to this day someone in their 80's had that good of eyesight. I bet she cleans the corners of the mirror in her bathroom with a Q-tip.

Jason, just before you spoke about the standard, you were talking about picking up sticks, which I don’t mind but my question for you is when you give a customer a good deal and your agreement is to show up, weed trim and blow, do you feel like it is the customer’s responsibility to make sure sticks, limbs etc are all picked up and the yard should be “mow ready”?
@lawncarelife6 жыл бұрын
I think if it's a few sticks after a storm that is understandable. If it is a constant problem then it would need to be discussed with the customer what are the expectations

Offer people a pair of sizzors so if a blade of grass causes a problem, they can use the sizzzors to maintain the way they want. I had a business for 25 years also dealing with families and I was asked to babysit their dog,cat,kids,parents, and some are my good friends now, some are not, personality conflict is all I can say They will use you because they look at you not as a business owner but as a yard boy or a person to clean their homes and you don't have a PHD added to your price quote. I watch your videos for DIY lawn care, as I'm in north east Al. and I do it myself at 61, not yet old (lawnrey) person. Lol

I was in pest control for 14 years. I found that the hardest people to get my money from were the middle aged, very well to do folks. Not only were they difficult to get paid from, but they would get upset if you called them and told them that they need to pay. I can't say that I ever had problems with elderly people, none that stands out to me. I also found out early on that some folks no matter the demographic, were quick to blame me for the fact they didn't pay. I tried to educate all my customers on what they can realistically expect from my services, my guarantee, and the pesticides we used. It cut down on misunderstandings and if one had a complaint that was not legitimate, I would remind them of the beginning conversation.

The people who I always give a really good deal and do all the extra work end up canceling on us. The people who I end up charging the right amount or way too much end up being my best. I have one lawn priced way above my market price and they give me a 10-20% tip on my bill every month. This is crazy and I love that they tip because I'm already making a lot of money on it.

@@lawncarelife Man you put up some great videos. A buddy and I talk grass on a day to day basis and were constantly sharing your videos back and forth. Quick question, is there a chemical out there to make the transition from winter rye back to Bermuda faster? Meaning to kill off the winter rye in early spring.

ROFL I'm trying to understand if I resemble those remarks. I just turned 66 and have been disabled for over 10 years. If someone knocks on my door before noon it will wake me up and I'll introduce my cranky side. If they are trying to sell me something I'll present them with such a splenetic diatribe that the blue cloud will follow them all the way home. On the other hand if you encounter me between noon and 6am you'll find me as 'normal' as anyone else you may encounter that day. If I become your customer I'll be one of those who will tell you flat out if you don't charge enough. If I wouldn't do it for that price then you shouldn't either. We all have our idiosyncrasies and now you know this old guy's. Cheers. Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work. Think about making a set of training videos that covers every thing imaginable. Then offer them for sale because there's good money in digital marketing and you only have to write/film it once. Between periods of retirement I considered getting into that line of work but didn't have a clue about what I would need, how to prospect, and how to price. I'm down for good this time but still on occasion wonder what it would have been like. If you had been around to train me I would probably still be at it. Just my 2 cents from a cranky old person. Maybe not so cranky, it's 9 pm which is my noon :-)

Nice honest discussion regarding the elderly. I'm a young 57 guy, but by now I've realized humans form their social behavior at a young age, and carry it forward. As much as we want to 'respect our elderly', their is a good chance that if we witnessed the behavior of SOME OF THEM at age 30,40 or 50, we would have steered clear of them. (NO, I do not mean ALL elderly). Another harsh reality of ageing that can not be adequately explained is the realization that their youth has been slowly stolen away by the passage of time. Retirement is a great shock to many, since most of life's familiar people and places suddenly no longer exist. Your youth, energy and friends are gone, and left alone to enjoy the 'Golden Years', which is a bunch of BULL STUFF! As the years rapidly pass for an older person, they witness their friends dying, becoming crippled by stroke, bed ridden by illnesses, etc, and see this as the fate that awaits them. The great questions of life haunt the elder. This is it? Now I just wait to die? Bitterness and resentment will kick in, and they will blame anyone and everyone else, because they can't blame Father Time. The young will never understand this, until they too are worn down by the passage of time. Life is a wonderful opportunity, and the sooner we learn to appreciate it and others, the easier our journey will be as we move towards one of my favorite places to cut grass... ...the cemetery. Again, I am not referring to all of our elders, so turn off the flame throwers. Best to All, Mr. Brown Florida

Dude. That is a common tactic with hotrod shops. People will negotiate a repair or a mod to something. You agree on work and such. Then in mid course the guy will say oh while your at it can you do this and/or that and you agree to do it and not negotiate additional fees. Or possibly in mid course they want something done that is beyond your scope of experience so they take it somewhere to get it done then back to you and the person who did that job messed up your work and blame you for it. The point is, before you do work, get a contract of expected work to be performed and cost for the work. Anything outside that contract draw a new contract or say it is not in the contract and not your expertise. That way it is written down on what is expected. It does not matter what others before have done. It is what is in writing. If they want you to trim bushes and stuff in addtion just renegotiate contract. Tell them you are a business and X dollars cover Y amount of work. If you say $40 an hour and your yard takes 30 minutes so that is $20. And bushes will take an additional 30 minutes.... what ever it is. They have either become ignorant of the fact people are being nice or they are using it for their advantage. Just say I am in the business to make money, and I dont work for free.Sometimes it is better to let problem customers walk than take the work on then it bite you later.
