Montana Cowboy puts shoes on a horse in a very unique way! On a horse Shoeing Table.
Rhett & Link attempted to put shoes on a horse in one of their episodes this year, so I thought I would show a completely different way of shoeing.

As a farrier and an animal behaviour student my only thought is 🤦 That horse is a saint... Equines in general are saints... If it is not necessary, why put an animal through all that, is there a single veterinarian reason for laying that horse on a table? Plus, you know that you can see if you've done a good work only when the horse bears its weight, there is no way you could say you had done a good job before she was on the ground. Hope she does well and lives till her thirties, hope she doesn't get shoed like that all the times. Have a good day.

I am flabbergasted! I would never even consider using what sounds and looks to me like a torture table. Just how long does it take to train a horse to put up with this. Seems to me that you need them standing to look at getting a proper trim. For hundreds of years the normal way worked fine. Out of curiosity, what was it that made you believe that reclining was the way to go or is it all about the ease of using an electric sander or saving your back? I can't watch anymore.
@lilik6945

literally, this has to be learned helplessness? i doubt they taught the horse to lay on the table properly- they couldve just trained holding the feet properly in a shorter time. i dont see what problem this is supposed to solve.. not to mention evaluating balance with a horse lying down is impossible (im starting equine behavioral studies this year! 😍)

You ought to be using a clinch block… bend the nail over with your hammer, nip it short, set each nail with your block to start the clinch (about 90 degrees to the hoof wall) and finish it with your clincher. I know you feel those shoes are on tight, they are not. You rolled your clinch. You even said you bend the nail over. A clinch has a nail crimped (clinched) over at a sharp angle, not rolled over like a coat hanger. Clinching also sets the nail head into the fuller of the shoe (the groove). Makes the shoe tight to the foot and helps the nail head wear more slowly. If you do it absolutely right you bury that clinch, don’t even have to rasp them off to smooth them. I first came across this horrible style of shoeing in Wyoming. Lonnie Mantle and his brothers ran hundreds of head of horses. Leased them to dude ranches and rental strings all over Montana, Wyoming and Colorado(maybe even Idaho). You could lease them for the summer and get them shod or unshod. The outfit I worked for got them unshod. That was because the shoes would not stay on, often the horses pulled them stomping around in the stock trailer while getting delivered. We leased 70-80 horses a summer from them and I shod all of them. In fairness, some were pretty wild for shoeing and for efficiency’s sake I did tie down a few to get them done. But horizontal shoeing just generally is not good horsemanship or good equine management practice. Taking off all the hoof varnish the way you do with that grinder is also unnecessary. It is detrimental to the horse. That stuff is natures way of retaining moisture in the hoof. Shouldn’t have to rasp any flares much higher up the wall than about a half inch, generally no higher than your nail line. One last comment… you bend heels around the horn of an anvil. You are ruining the hardy hole. That hole is for hot shoeing cutting and forming tools. You’ll get a smoother arc on the heel that will match the bend of the foot using the horn. If you need to bend one so sharply as to need the hardy hole then you might not be using the right size shoe. Just some unasked for two cents from someone who shod a few thousand in my lifetime.

maybe that's a good idea for horses with heavy Laminitis to help them out of this misery. But for a healthy horse, it's more stressful than necessary. On the other hand, removing the outer layer of the hoof wall to "make it pretty nice" is an absolute no-go, because you remove the ONLY layer that safes the wall against environmental impacts.

Interesting. Only time seen a horse be put sideways is some wild Mustangs who aren't trained to stand. Various KZbin channels trimming dairy cows use machines to hold them & turn on side. The dairy cow trimmers also use a sander. Never seen that for a horse. -- My hoof trimmers just ask the horse to hold up the foot for them. They also use a hoof stand. I think this method of tying a horse down would be mentally stressful, even for a horse used to the process. Horse was breathing faster & when got up was trembling. Well, interesting. I've seen all sorts of trim videos on KZbin. Some Russians & in eastern Europe who work on draft horses use a stock to stand the horse in & tie up hoof with ropes. Pull the rear legs out backwards. Have little platforms to place the hoof.

Never shod a horse on its side, not sure any of mine would tolerate this without being sedated. Either way, comments suggest inability to properly shoe for pastern angle and balance. Flat hoof is flat, perpendicular to leg, plumb, degree of angle from to the heel to the toe is relative to pastern angle of the animal so they may travel according to phenotype. Every horse Ive shod is slightly different. In terms of its use and genetics relative to hoof soundness. Its simply the ferriers view point of the horse from standing or laying. The mechanics necessary are exactly the same. Didnt make the hoof fit the shoe, fit the shoe to the hoof and removed the excess. Think a moment, if this didnt work for this person, the result would be lame unusable stock. Just because You cant wrap Your head around it doesnt make it an unsound practice. Quality gentics, environmental factors, management, and a horse of those qualities will typically manage their feet with little intervention. Shoe a horse standing or laying, the fundamentals are exactly the same, difference is perspective.

Genetically sound animal and good management of the stock makes shoeing useless...
@jerryallen8086
@jerryallen8086 Жыл бұрын
@@windfiend I agree. I generally perfer an unshod horse over a shod horse. For light ranch horse or as a using animal (the typical application of my personal equine partners labors). I say this from NW Arkansas with 40+ inches of rainfall, diverse soil types, intended animal use and frequency, and their management practices. My stock is rarely confined to a lot; let alone stalled. Neither are condusive to nature helping to manage natural hoof care or nutrition. My horses are comingled with the cow herd under management intensive grazing. Hoof care is given as needed, and shoe's applied based upon animal genetics, management, and performance desire. Perhaps Im still old fashioned but even a mid level barrel racing animal reguardless of hoof soundness could benefit from a proper shoe selection. Riding bare foot is perfectly okay, been done for thousands of years, but the environment our equing partners are sometimes confined to; the high performance feeds, the hard or stony ground to allow for natural hoof care they are restricted access. Mid level using animals benefit from natural surroundings, diet, and limited thoughtful human intervention. Just my 40 year expirence that works for me.

This method of shoeing has really stirred up some contentious comments! Having grown up with my own pony and later in life with my first wife and her horse, have always had a farrier do hot shoeing, personally think it’s a better fit. As for the technical of having a horse standing, I give way to those in the know of fitting a shoe. This is what seems a local practice in Wyoming, watching the horse go over on the table, did seem to me a little alarming but it did not struggle and seemed ok at the end. Health issues aside and welfare of the horse, I am not a religious Man, each to their own, with respect, but I like to think that I try to be ‘Christian’ to my fellow man and to see the vitriol out pouring of comments on this subject against Trinity, I just find awful! I can see this being a godsent for a horse who is lame in all legs and it is painful to put their weight on three legs while the other one is lifted for be trimmed and/or shoed, but for a healthy horse, stressing them, putting them in a laying position where they don't feel safe and vulnerable, not to say how their anatomy works and how they can't lay for very long to the point they evolved the ability to lock their joints to rest right up and need only a few mins of REM sleep to feel rested. I mean the horse is slightly tiled up right so it isn't the full effect of laying down, but doubt it feels nice for em, I mean when we lose oxygen, our muscles aren't supplied well we shake, tremble and take shallow breaths, and we as warm blooded animals and the horses being that too, our muscles work the same, you should know how awful it feels, now the horse has to feel the trembling weak feeling every 4 weeks that they are required to be shoed. horses don't tremble if they aren't in an awful state. I know bovines are turned like that, but their anatomy is completely different, they can lay for longer periods of time while they chew cud

To each their own. If you got a horse that's okay with that go for it I guess. It certainly does not look comfortable for the animal though. You can build a rack to run them in like they do for draft horses. It's safer and easier for you and much more comfortable for the horse. Those racks also have support straps that go under their belly for added comfort for the horse.

Hmm, this was very interesting..., I've never seen anything like this before. I don't know much about shoing, but this technique seems helps the humans to do the job more comfortably, but what about the horses... I guess, there's so much work on the farm, that sometimes the most efficient method of doing certain things is the most preferred one... Love the nature around your area, it's so beautiful and vast! 😊

I am a big fan of your videos but not of this one. Horses physically can not handle laying down for hours at a time. It puts a lot of stress on their internal organs. God designed them to stand. This is why horses only lay down to sleep for 20 to 30 min everyday. They sleep standing up the other 4 hours they sleep. Also you cannot check the angle of the hoof. Also your horses is obviously amazing to let you do this, but if she were to get spooked while on the table she could freak because she is tied down and hurt or kill herself. I like outside the box thinking, but I don't think this is a wise choice.

This is: 1. Unprofessional to call out on someone, especially by their full name. 2. Completely UNSAFE for the horse! ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING can go wrong with this tipping table! 3. Damaging to the horses front leg on which the horse is laying down as it can cause a paralysis of the radial nerve! 4. Damaging to the hind legs where (if the horse decides to fight the straps) they can break their hocks or tear their knee caps from rotation, pull and being strapped down! 5. Wrong, as your angle of looking at the hoof is distorted and you miss true hoof balance. 6. Wrong as you are using a GRINDER to shape the hoof: THIS IS NOT A COW! As a DVM with interest in lameness and orthopedic shoeing: your job was way worse than the previous job, you will cause massive flares and under-run heels in just a few shoeing cycles as your measurement is off by the position of the horse.
