Kirby Allison yes, but talking too much about the personal aspects, especially about going into the Prince’s bedroom, then about him giving the shoes to his son as they didn’t fit is not a clever move. Some of us have had regular contact with Clarence House through charitable work - the Royals require those dealing with them to be very discreet.

Most versatile "next to black"? Black = definitely not the most versatile. I've always believed burgundy is the most versatile color, as you can pull it off on not only charcoal, lighter greys, and Navy suits, but also with olive green, light blue, camel, and other colored trousers.

Hi Kirby, I have a pair of burgundy shoes that I want to 'antique' similar to HRH's shoes here. Will the black saphir cream polish go too far and blacken the shoes too much? I usually use the bordeaux colour. If I'm not happy with the result will the reno mat strip it all back off? Thanks heaps

dthomson409 try mixing oxblood, burgundy and a bit of black dye. I did this recently.

dthomson409 Great suggestion from Demar. But, yes, all of G&G’s patinas are done properly with alcohol-based leather dyes, so you don’t have to worry about the Reno’Mat affecting the original finish. That said, don’t go crazy because if you try hard enough, you can strip off some of the original finish.

sagar godse I’m not certain what they call it. Probably burgundy / claret - the official color of the Royal Family. The Queen’s Bentley is painted in this color.

Kirby - When I clean and polish with Saphyr products the broguing in my wingtips gets plugged with the creams. Anything you can recommend to clean or prevent this?

Is it possible for a company as young as G&G to earn a Royal Warrant? In my observation, that usually appears to be an honor bestowed to those merchants with an entrenched reputation which goes back at least several decades. But please correct me if I’m wrong.

Interesting story but I'm afraid this is very indiscreet. Now everyone knows the Prince is a 9F. His Lobb shoes have lasted for decades and are very, very cracked and even patched.

I hope G & G get their warrant, but I agree, this type of video is definitely not a good idea - Rigby & Peller lost their warrant because they gave out a little too much information about their Royal clientele. This video almost assumes getting one is a done deal, and that’s a good way to ensure you won’t get one. As for Lobb: hugely overrated. They are more expensive than G & G, unlike G & G don’t include the shoe trees in the bespoke price (Lobb charge a further £750 for making the trees!) and again, unlike G & G, Lobb don’t even make a trial shoe for new customers.

Foster & Son has gone through quite a revival and has invested a lot in a new factory in Northampton. As for the Royal Warrant, G&G should not think it is a given. It also looks a bit shabby to be courting a warrant by offering gifts and then telling the world and his wife that you measured the Prince of Wales's feet in his bedroom. It didn't work for Stephen Hitchcock either...

Karl Delavigne It wasn’t the original intention of the shoe, though. HRH was very happy with them, but G&G after seeing his feet knew they wouldn’t fit. So, they offered to do something bespoke for him. In the end, though, they’ll probably just do a heavily-modified RTW last and run some shoes through the factor for him. Interesting concept.
