And the crazy thing is, EXACTLY 1 year ago on 9/19/2023, he had his Tommy John surgery. Most pitchers after that surgery just spend the whole year on their couch recovering. Ohtani decides to take that recovery year and just go do something no one has ever done before in the history of the sport. And I find it laughable that some people poo-pooing about how easy it is to steal bases now. If it's so easy, how come only 1 person in the big leagues has more stolen bases than Ohtani?

Yes, I'm glad you brought that up. 50/50 aside, just hitting 50 homeruns playing at Dodger Stadium is unimaginable. With all the great sluggers in Dodgers history, nobody was able to hit 50 while playing half their games at this stadium. Dodgers play 70+ games at night for home games. At night the air is so cool and heavy that fly balls lose about 30 feet. Similar to how you gain 30 feet at Denver. Most sluggers lose about 10 homeruns a year because of the stadium effect.
@LL-tc1reАй бұрын
Ah, I remember Ohtani had a lot of warning track shots caught at the wall, but looked like a HR off his bat. Probably did just miss at least 5 more HRs. I also remember he lost 1 or 2 in the beginning of the year at Wrigley with the wind.

I did not think he can do all of this in just 1 game so how he got to 50-50 was the most significant for me. My jaw dropped when he hit that 50th homer. However, the most fun thing for me was that when the stat line became 50-51, I thought to myself it would be nice if he can make that an even 51-51. And when he actually did it, it was a very OMG moment that got me yelling and pounding the table! Unbelievable!

So it should be said too, not that it matters, the hardest home run to hit was the 3rd. Your amped up for velocity, or some 80-90 breaking pitches at worst. To effortlessly square up that pitch on that arc showed his next level barrel control. Most people would write that off as a cookie.

KZbinrs! - Is there any close equivalency in any other sport? I can only think of Wayne Gretzky scoring 5 goals to get 50 in 39 games in 1981 when the previous record was 50 in 50. Is it ironic there is a Gretzky jersey in the background! I really appreciate this exceptional take on this historic, monumental event! Shohei is already a transcendent player at this young age!

If there was no wild pitch and the base runner does not come home his rbi would have been up 11 rbi. If his double was a home run it he would have 4 home runs and 12 rbi. If he was not thrown out at 3rd base he would have a triple. His stat line would have been 4 home runs, 12 rbi, 1 triple, and a single, 2 stolen bases. He would tied for the most rbi in a game and tied for the most home runs in a game in historic night where he got 50/ 50 club. Even though he did get those stats it's still the most impressive moment in baseball history. I guess 3 homers, 2 doubles, 1 single, 2 stolen base and batting 6 for 6 will do. The crazy thing is he could batted for the cycle also.
