Are you going to cover JoJo's? It's longer than One Piece (from 1987 and likely to end in 2035). It's also had dramatic change, very dramatic. Part 1 looks very dated (good still) but then Part 7-9 look far, far better.

TLDR: Horikoshi got more assistants to draw his books. Early on it was mainly himself doing the artwork but later he ammased a huge team (7-9 artists) to draw for him. Which explains why backgrounds, shading, panelling etc all imrpoved. Horikoshi himself admitted that he no longer needs to work on the art as much because his assistants handle all of that. I wish the assistants were recognized for their work because they are the main reason why the art looks so good. Here's a list of some of them: Kei Monri, Keisuke Ikeda, Taichi Mugino, Tatsuya Tanimoto, Rin Matsui, Yuuki Yoshida, Ryuu Horie, Hirofumi Neda, there's a few more that I'm forgetting though. At the end of each volume Horikoshi would credit his assistants and thank them for the sheer amount of work they do. Especially the assistant who works on drawing/designing the costume for his characters. It's pretty nice because a lot of mangaka don't do that. Kohei Horikoshi's art has improved over the years (you can tell by comparing his old sketches to his new ones), but for the manga he said that he mainly focuses on the writing with his editor. But if I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure he does do the covers himself. Kohei (and many other weekly mangaka) have a very effecient system for creating manga.

Something I would love to point out is Horikoshi's facial expressions, for me they're one the biggest aspect of his artstyle and something that has inspired me a lot, he's able to show what a character is feeling perfectly just with small tweaks and changes to their faces, I think that's something that also has changed over the curse of the manga, in early chapters the expressions were a lot more cartoony and exaggerated, now even though we still have those, there's also the very subtle ones that are also able to convey as much emotions as the exaggerated faces

Well said! I love studying Horikoshi's expressions for this reason! Ofc intense feelings are shown with extreme faces, but in the earlier volumes, even quieter emotions like unease and relief were portrayed with pretty exaggerated expressions. The expressions become more subtle as the manga progresses, but those are also amazing because the quieter expressions still manage to portray those feelings in a completely clear way, while feeling more human. Another thing that really inspires me about MHA's style is how Horikoshi draws hands! His author's comment for Vol. 2 says that he loves drawing hands because, beside the face, they're the most expressive part of the body. He's very purposeful about drawing them, and when I read that authour's note and started to see hands as "something expressive" instead of "something difficult to draw", they've somehow become *fun to draw.*

@@Bumblebee_Aziiwitch hat atelier art style is incredible and the artistic choice in panelling and unique illustrations are even better. But it’s very hard to compare it to bnha art style because of how different the intentions are. Bnha is an action packed shounen and one of its strongest qualities is dynamics and edginess. The perspective work, lineart and poses are just top notch. Witch hat atelier gives off that pretty cottagecore fantasy feeling which is too different, and I’m not saying this as a bad thing but the faces in that art style are a lot more anime typical. I personally prefer Horikoshi’s art work for its animation-like dynamic liveliness and unique character design and the characters expressions

@@ronan5642 I wouldn't say mangaka's (or animators for that matter) are good at art, a lot of them barely know anatomy and proper perspective shots. If you compare it to western illustrators these "panels" dont stand a candle to what type of quality and render they can pull off + mangaka work mainly in black/white and then have a colorist after doing the job, etc. The biggest factor that matters for manga is the style and composition, because details are easily achieved today with digital drawing and screentones.

Honestly I really like how the art style developed overtime along with the story. Back at the beginning it felt like more of a lighthearted, cartoonish story about a hero ready to take on the world. I think that the art style reflected that really well. Then, as the villains got more powerful, the stakes got higher, and the childlike innocence that we saw in so many of the character interactions started to fade, the art started to change. The paneling, the detail on the character's faces, the overall darkening of the color pallette, it grew overtime to reflect the state of the world continuously growing more dire. Horikoshi really goes above and beyond every chapter and I'm so excited to see where the story goes from here, I really like where we're at in the story in chapter 420. BTW, I'm writing this before getting through much of the video so if a lot of my comment was already mentioned, sorry for the redundancy.

I’ve always loved Horikoshi’s art style, simply for the fact that he can make realistic proportions and still have it have the anime feel by giving the characters distinct features. He’s also amazing at using his understanding of anatomy to convey feeling from his pages. Sometimes there doesn’t have to be any words on the page to get the mood across, it’s all told perfectly through the characters’ poses and facial expressions. He’s also able to take creative liberty and make funny and out of proportion drawings to get humor or over dramatic moments across. He’s one of the greats in the industry imo!

My favorite thing with Horikoshi is probably whenever he does page spreads. There's always so much detail put into them that makes them look amazing. I honestly didn't even notice the lack of background in the early portion of the manga, but I'm glad that was pointed out given that it really shows how much emphasis was put on the characters themselves. It kinda reminds me of Tite Kubo and how he draws Bleach later on with backgrounds not being a top priority.

The thing that i noticed is that everything drawn in his style (especially in the latest chapters) has thickness. The simplest example- lips and mouths ( i guess its the most noticeable in Bakugos expressions). While other mangas draw them as flat objects, like a piece of paper glued to the face just to make the reader to understand is it a smile, or angry expression , Horikoshi gives it thickness. It’s not “just a smile” or just an opened circle-mouth to show who is speaking. No, you can see, if not understand, the muscles of the face, teeth, lips and so on. Everything has thickness. Shoes again. Not flat - every layer has thickness, there s not just left and right of the layer- but also up and down. It’s bodies, cloth, arms( have you seen those last chapters? It left me speechless!) And again, fingers and arms also have thickness. Some may draw them as cylinders, Horikoshi makes it look more like parallelepipeds with rounded corners. And this “squareness” again somehow makes it to point out its thickness too. eyebrows are not just lines- they have it in them too and so on so on so on. These thicknesses make layering pop out, catch your eye not just give you a knowledge that there are layers, just believe it- you see it yourself.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I thought this video is a pretty mixed bag, leaning more into the negative side imo. You should do a little more research on how manga production or any other type of production is done. Horikoshi has many assistants compared to other mangaka, which is why we start to see more detailed backgrounds. This is the case for most manga with detailed backgrounds; here's a rule of thumb for manga (and any media in general): if it looks too good for a weekly release, a bunch of people worked on it.

I do think in part it’s the way manga tends to be written: the beginning books readers in with introductions of characters and really cementing designs for the later story. While the later chapters are dedicated to the actual story since the characters largely stay the same; we’re not being introduced to main characters again, we know what they look like and so more effort can be put into backgrounds or objects. Just something I’ve noticed in long ongoing series I personally read and is kinda the standard across the board

Hm make me want to reread Crazy Zoo again and see how his art changes because they are the same, just more animals he draws. We also get like alot of characters from Crazy Zoo and we get characters styles from it. Sad he had to rush the circus arc I would love to see the Zoo animals fighting dinosaurs in a museum. Just pictures a bakugo lion spining like a drill attack a T-rex or a three horn. That would be cool.

6:56 "they aren't dramatically different" well yeah of course not. That's just how improvement works, slowly but surely. Once an artist has an art style the next road is to solidify that and continue honing your foundations so that no matter how your style changes it'll never look wonky. 7:35 so he...improved? lol It basically all comes down to milage. He sharpened his skills in hatching, values, anatomy, shape design (especially this), and perspective and viola! Well rounded art! I wished u showed more of the cover pages Hirokoshi does (like the vigilante Deku bc his hatchlines there was a good example as well) and other big spreads from the war, since u already disclaimed spoilers. But oh well As for what a think abt his stye. I think the word "boxy" or "angular" fits well lol, he uses his lines well to show 3 dimensionality. I really love his hands and overall anatomy, I like observing muscles - more specifically forearms, biceps, triceps, the whole arm basically lol - as well as hands from diff artists. I recommend Hirokoshi to beginners for studying since shapes with actual angles (clear beginnings and ends) are easier to understand and emulate even if it doesn't fit with your style rather than rounder shapes (which leads to uncertainty most of the time - which is different from fluid lines, I wanna clarify).

Lovely video ! It's a bit of a shame thought that you didn't talk about how his style changes depending on what and who is drawing :o What I thing is so interesting is how he adapts to different characters, All Might with the black shading, NightEye and Jeanist looking so ridiculously long, Stars and Strips coming out of a comic book, I believe it's pretty iconic of his work

Although I dropped MHA long ago, I still follow Horikoshi and sometimes check in on the manga JUST for the art style alone. No matter how my opinion on the story has changed I'll always be grateful to MHA for pushing my own art and inspiring me and my artstyle. Hori's art is freaking beautiful with his designs, new linework, shading, detailing, backgrounds, COLORING with his color spreads! I loved seeing it evolve over the last few years. Too bad studio Bones isn't able to adapt it into the anime as properly because it would be a breath-takingly beautiful anime if it were, no doubt about it. Edit: I think one thing he's gotten better at are action scenery, idk why but perspectives and intensity are so much better in recent panels I've seen. Maybe expressions too, more cleaned up I think

The word I was waiting for you to say is: graphic. The way everything looks so crisp and clean is because Horikoshi have a wicked good sense of shapes and how to use them to convey ideas, that’s why he could get away with less shading, background or line weight variety, he thinks like a designer and that translates to the crucial points of his work being super appealing to the average consumer.

@@ShonenOuji imo the heads seem more balanced, like in relation to shoulders. (Obviously they’re gained muscle but I think it goes beyond that- the heads have gotten wider too and izuku’s cheeks have changed sm.) the mouths are drawn smaller now for the most part and the anatomy is a bit less exaggerated. (Ofc you mentioned that with the hair and eyes, but the eyes are drawn super different, not just the change in size) For example look at the panel where izuku is running to save bakugo from the sludge villain, super cartoony. Compare that to him lunging forward here pbs.twimg.com/media/EkHaOnuVcAATqG4?format=jpg&name=large I hope this doesn’t sound rude I really love this video! I’m just super passionate abt art lol

A lot of the grey screen tones and better backgrounds while horikoshi definitely improved on that front he has said his assistants handle a lot of that stuff because he hates drawing it. Which is him underselling himself bc he still crushes backgrounds. But as his manga grows he gets more and better assistants which is another reason why the backgrounds get so much better. Read his older series Crazy Zoo I believe that's the English name. But that's were Gang Orca came from and the lady momo did those Ad training with plus more animal base characters. It about a lady who want to be a Zoo keeper than she get work at a zoo were the animals get people forms because the own is a curse bunny man. He want to make his Zoo the best Zoo so he break the curse. The fights are fun and all the characters are nicely drawn. He also have another manga that got canceled where the hero have like a shadow skill hm kind of like dark shadow but hero if I remember have a midoria look to him. Just ya look at some of his older series before my hero they are all fun reads.

I feel like when the characters got more rounded on like their joints and chins, they looked a lot younger (especially Deku, Uraraka, Tsuyu, Kirishima, Bakugou, and Denki), which is probably what brought up the theory that after Deku was rewinded by Eri in Deku v. Overhaul to the point where he looked slightly younger after.

Hes always been my biggest inspiration for art, since the manga came out. His ability to mix comic and manga art styles so seamlessly while also adding his own flair, his insane character design process, the complexity of the designs and costumes, the linework, the masterful shading and use of black, it's all the work of an outstanding artist. Even the backgrounds blow me away. Particularly when (SPOILERS) Deku breaks through Shigaraki's mind gate in the recent chapters and the buildings are seen being shattered inside his head with a piercing light. Everything is so dynamic and blocky in his style, but he balances it out with such good knowledge of everything else he's doing. I can't say enough about this man. Top 5 mangaka of ALL TIME.

I feel like you missed mentioning the heavy use of hatching and cross hatching more, with the variation in screen tones being darker and more blacks on the page. Folds in cloths also rely more on hatching rather than pure linework, which adds more depth. I also believe as of the last 30ish chapters, the linework particularly with the villains are more "wavy" in a sense which conveys their chaos more. I know you don't typically talk about colouring but I think it goes without saying that Horikoshi while he has a "main" style of colouring he's definitely branched out into a number of colouring techniques and styles, sometimes dependent on the vibe he wants to evoke
