Another reason that makes Turbo Granny work is that she has same kind of "I'm old, I don't give a fuck" energy as Seiko, which is why they become besties. She has this weird Garfield-like appeal where you can tell she's *clearly* an ass, but you still like seeing her on screen. She's prideful which makes it funny when she gets knocked down a peg, but it also makes you cheer when she actually pulls something off and she look cool. She's also a great version of the "Jerk with a Heart of Gold" trope. When she helps Okarun to get stronger, it's less a case of "I want to help you out" and more a case of "you have *my* powers, how the hell do you suck so bad? We're fixing this now, because you failing makes me look bad."

The funny thing about Chopper is that Oda was against him being a mascot. But Ikue Otani(Pikachu’s VA) did such a good job at making Chopper more adorable, that Oda ended up making him more of a mascot.

Turbo Granny is more of a meme than a traditional mascot like Pikachu or Chopper. Because Turbo Granny is actually a veteran who's on the same level as Seiko and some of the smart aliens, knowing more about the lore than the main characters themselves. The only thing that makes Turbo Granny cute and funny is that she acts tough and badass while being in a silly little cat and just becomes the meme of the show. In my opinion, traditional mascots just have to be marketable, cute and popular. Backstory and character development don’t really matter all that much, and Chopper and Pikachu are great examples of this. You could just see cute merch of them at a store and want to buy it without knowing their backstories or importance to the show. The best anime character to compare Turbo Granny to is Dimple from Mob Psycho rather than Chopper or Pikachu. At first, you might glance over them, but learning how funny and deep they really are makes you love them instantly.

It makes his point about how Chopper doesn’t grow meaningfully compared to TG even worse. Not only does it point out Chopper’s failings far more, but it also has nothing to do with the history of the character. TG has grown as a character, making her more interesting than Chopper. You don’t need copious amounts of history for it. The belief that the sole reason that she’s successful is cuz she hasn’t been around long enough to annoy ppl is also a bad argument. This can be alleviated by giving said character good moments, but also not make them the focus all the time. There’s no reason to be sick of her when she’s not even there.

Tbh I don't see Turbo Granny as a mascot because she's rarely cute (bonus chapters and the ending) and she has a lot more to offer character wise (mentor for example). Do I still want to buy a Turbo Granny plushie ? Yes. Did I preorder Dandadan volume 15 collector edition with a Turbo Granny hat ? Of course. One mascot I really like as a mascot is Emul from Shangri-La Frontier, they really did a great job with her !

First off, Chopper isn’t the mascot-that’s way more Luffy’s role than his. Chopper is cute, and the crew is too big for everyone to get their own arc post-time-skip, but he still has his moments. He shines in comedic, cute, and even cool moments. I love how he imitates the older crew members and all his quirky habits. Comparing him to Pikachu is such a low blow. Saying he did nothing after the time-skip is just false. What about Punk Hazard? The whole situation unfolds because he and Nami couldn’t turn their backs on the children. He’s such a lovable and memorable character in that arc. Or Wano? He worked tirelessly during the raid and even punched Queen right in his stupid face!

Actually the more I watch this the more I'm realizing kon would've been the absolute *best* example for a bad mascot one could find in a popular shonen considering your criteria. Lmao choosing chopper over him is hilarious, that decision alone has already made him a more endearing case than any of the examples in the video. Also I wouldn't put too much stock in how the op community feels in large about things- especially when they're mostly concerned with powerscaling and things of that nature, trivializing the story while letting other details slip past them. I don't think as a group they're equipped to tackle topics such as whether chopper is a good mascot or not so I wouldn't use them as a focus group. For this you should've stuck to people who actually collect anime mascots, who are wholly familiar with them, and ask what they feel about each of them as characters in their collections and why, compare and contrast those feelings for each mascot and then maybe you could've come up with a good hypothesis for what makes a mascot a strong one. For now, to me, chopper is still miles ahead of any of the other examples in this video. Good vid btw!

POTENIAL SPOILERS- Chopper knew he couldnt remove devil fruit powers and he did invent a drug that cured a crazy disease within the wano arc you talked about though…. Maybe he could have thought about reverse engineering the smile fruit but I still don’t see you saying chopper hasn’t changed and he’s done nothing even though he got over his fear of people for the most part and he also has had significantly bigger roles inside of each arc. I agree with most of everything you had said but you can’t downplay chopper. He also was never meant to be a mascot, unlike turbo granny having an already used trope like in ghost stories. Also it’s easy to downplay him seeing that he’s known to be overlooked by the marines, as well as the viewers.

I would argue luffy is the mascot of one piece. His signature hat is the name for the crew, he's in more promotional material than chopper and he sells better than chopper. Could be because he's the mc but in all definitions of mascot, luffy out performs chopper except for cuteness since no one can beat chopper

Turbo Granny might be my favourite character in Dandadan so far. It's between her and Momo. You explained exactly why I like her. She challenges the main characters in a comedic way but she is also helpful to them. I think Turbo Granny's cat form is really cute, especially in that one scene at school when she is eating. Her cold & disrespectful character provides this sense of irony that makes her so appealing. Chopper in part 2 sucks. I miss part 1 chopper, he was sooo cool in Enis lobby

I feel like usefulness plays a big part in being a popular mascot. Which I feel like is why chopper’s popularity has been declining. Chopper used to be vital part in the arcs in taking down the big bads but nowadays he is just a person that at most stalls the big bad for a bit and then returns to being the token cute little guy. Here’s an example. During Wano he stalled Queen for a bit but then just healed the ice oger plague and inbetween just turned into baby gramps chopper for cuteness sake.

One Piece does suffer the issue of drawing out a story as long as one can so you can take time writing and creating ideas. Shonen Jump and the majority of weekly comic magazines don’t allow the best writing with a tight schedule and editors who strive to turn a series they’re overseeing into someone else’s. One can only hope that One Piece can end and can have a revision that shortens it and fixes the story and character contrivances.

That's the thing though, Chopper wasn't a mascot. Earlier on he felt like an actual character with things to do and such. It wasn't until around the end of thriller bark where his design was worsened and was given less and less fights until he eventually became a generic cute character with only so much to do at this point.

The answer is simple. Oda stopped writing several key characters and did not develop chopper anymore. Cute is good but also emptional attachment is a thing as well. Turbo granny is funny and cute! Also an interesting character as well. Chopper has not had development in a while and was just made to be cute. Some of the most cutest are ones that people had an attachment to from the shows and games. Not just that but people grew attached to them because of their journey and experiences. Oda left several characters to be one note or only there to be there.....scoff wcoff chopper, sanji, brook and more.

One piece fans have been asking for Oda to stop with making Sanji like how he did in the time skip. Not just that but people have called out oda for not developing other members of the strawhat crew and ignoring several important things. When you know how to write a story you know when there are problems with it. I have known and commented on these problems with only minimal positive replies.

? Punk hazard was chopper's arc, brook was literally instrumental in the B plot of whole cake island (getting the road poneglyph rubbings essential to their further progress in the grand line), and franky handled the smile factory destruction in dressrosa and held his own solidly in wano. Chopper and brook also had moments in wano. They also all have resolved traumas for the most part, and are simply working towards their dreams. Unlike sanji who honestly STILL has issues even after 2 backstories, zoro who's struggling to maintain himself as the solo pillar of the team because he puts too much weight and blame on his own shoulders, etc, and usopp who's cowardice will always hold him back until he's able to come to peace with himself.

Happy is just an annoying and worst written version of Chopper with even less depth than Chopper’s hat Elizabeth is alright, just a gag character tbh (outside of that one arc where he’s kinda the focus), not much to dislike or like Kon is a inferior, downgraded Dimple type character. Honestly, one of the worst “mascot” type characters Finally, Turbo Granny is what Kon wishes he was and while I do like her so far, she just doesn’t have the depth and character writing as Chopper does. In no particular order, I’d say the best in terms of writing, character, and all of the above for “mascot” type characters are Reborn, Chopper, and Dimple.

The problem with chopper is that he doesn't get many good moments (The oni incident in wano could've been removed and nothing would've changed!) he can be cute but he doesn't do much.. I know he's supposed to be a doctor but he barely does doctor stuff. and him constantly in his mascot form sucks since he has so many other forms yet only uses two or three of them most of the time! (Mascot form, kung fu form and monster form... NOTHING ELSE) two for fighting and one for looking adorable and going places, he also used to have brain point where he could find the opponents weakness if given enough time that was never used again after his arc... sad

What about Punk Hazard, where the whole point is to save kids and cure them from drugs? Or when he saves the entire village of Zou with the help of Caesar, preventing the poison and saving Neko and Inu characters. Essentially, what he does is character-related stuff. Additionally, he also saved people in Udon, including Luffy, which you are ignoring and lying about in the comments.

I feel like this is an unfair comparison. The only reason Turbo Granny it's not as dislike as Chopper is that she's a lot less prevalent as he is, not really as well explored as he was and overall is more of a gag than a mascot. If you ask me to buy a plushie with both of them, I'd definitely choose Chopper over Granny any other day. The white cat design is too generic and there's a lot more cuter cat design than Granny. Also, most people are annoyed only at the recent development of Chopper where he's a lot more of a crybaby and childish compared to his more matured self in pre-timeskip. Which is another issue that I have with your comparison. Chopper was so well written in the past that compared to his current self, does not lived up to it. He has a lot more going for him like his ambition. So seeing none of those being addressed in the current One Piece (YET, cause I know Oda will eventually cook with him), can really be frustrating to the fans. Meanwhile, like I said, Granny is a gag character. There's not really much development with her and occasionally she's being used as an exposition tool. She's a safe character. Nothing much to hate nor like about her. Anya from Spy Family is a better comparison, but then again, Anya's high is not even close as Chopper's peak. And when you don't set yourself up as highly as Chopper does, no matter how useless or irrelevant your character had become, people won't be as disappointed or annoyed as much. It's like saying Rilakuma or Gudetama or Tony Tiger is a better mascot than Chopper cause there's nothing to really dislike about them as much. They're all bunch of safe, inoffensive and chill mascot. Like at the of the day people don't hate Granny as much as Chopper, but inversely, they don't care nor invested about her as much.

You’ve also summated what the video says, that they’re disappointed at how Chopper was treated. Which stands in contrast to granny who gets continuous development over time and has a major or minor role in almost every arc. You’re ignoring her development, but that’s whatever. Like you said, Chopper doesn’t get any so maybe you just don’t notice development at all. I can’t believe you’re comparing a supposed gag character to a main character from another manga. Your expectations for what you call a gag is kinda insane. But if she IS comparable as you say, then I guess she’s got a bigger role than you’ve let on. Your argument is just “he was amazing and your problem is that he isn’t anymore so he’s worse than TG to you”. But maybe the whole point is that if you’re writing you keep this in mind by keeping her roles more minor with development throughout to not fall into the pitfall of her becoming irrelevant like Chopper became. The author knows this so well that when he removes her from the story, people actually miss her.

Again, if you pit those two characters together more people will go for Chopper cause he IS a main character. Not just a mere mascot. That's how Oda had always intentionally designed him. Like by the sheer popularity of his character is evident. Also, learn to read. I literally explained why that disappointment should not be a justification to unfairly attacked Chopper and compared him to Granny or any other safe mascot. Because again, if you look at both of them as a whole, Chopper has significantly more development and better character arcs than Granny. Granny like I said for the most part is a gag character or an exposition tool. Most of her serious moments literally got undercut by gag. Doesn't mean they can't have any development. Your argument about Granny literally is not only applicable by Chopper, but was done significantly more cause unlike Granny who you admit has major or minor, Chopper simply has a major role in most of the arc. When people think of Dandandan they don't think of the cat, they think if Okarun granny mode. When people think of One Piece, they think of the Straw Hats including Chopper.

But the fact he knows she's just a side character, he has no issue in completely removing her from the story. What kind of mental gymnastic strawman argument is that? He didn't removed her because he was afraid her falling into the trappings of becoming irrelevant, he just simply know she's not a main character and have to be let go eventually. You could have chosen any "mascot" character out there, and you chose Chopper for your example of not great "mascot" characters... I just--, that is one of the worst examples you could've given, as Chopper is not only one of the best written "mascot-like" characters' but also being infinitely better than Turbo Granny writing wise. Chopper, throughout the series, has had way higher peaks than Turbo Granny and she barely beats out Chopper when he's at his lowest low. Don't get me wrong, I love Turbo Granny, however to even have the gall to upload this video, not only comparing her to Chopper, but to even say she's better is crazy. Especially when there's other, way better examples you could've used like Happy, Hawks, or Kon. That's just my two cents and advice on how I would make this video better and having stronger foundation for the topic, though.

Chopper aint even the only one who got basically ruined in the timeskip. Yeah, I still love all the Straw Hats, but Oda just decided to make Zoro more serious, Sanji more annoying, Usopp being more of an annoying coward, Franky being WAYYY to annoying and unserious, Chopper a living toy, and sexualizing the living hell out of every single woman in One Piece.
