So I've been recording in 4K(30frames) to be safe. Question, am I right in thinking that I'm future proofing my videos, since quality on all devices will only get better over time? Or will it never make a difference on phones and tablets? In any case, I like that my vids will have the best current quality on 4K TV's. But it does take a ton of space. Surprisingly enough, my iPad Pro can handle it well, I've editing up to 45min of 4K with two tracks with almost no hiccups. I just offload the vids to an external afterwards.

I recommend shooting in whatever the highest resolution the technology that you own for your workflow will allow. if you have a computer that can't handle 4k (which is fewer and farther between these days honestly, particularly with the gpu doing a ton of the encoding and decoding work now), shoot in 1080. have a camera that only shoots in 1080p? shoot in 1080p (don't bother spending a ton of cash on new equipment if what you have works fine for what you do)... HOWEVER if your camera can shoot in 4k and your computer can handle rendering these files, I strongly recommending to shoot in 4k (even if the monitor on your computer doesn't support 4k) because A. it gives you significantly higher quality output for displays that do support 4k if you target 4k exports OR if you target 1080p exports it gives you not only he ability to crop in if you choose, but it gives you the option to completely re-frame shots in post which can be super easy. in fact, one trick i learned is that if you shoot a 2-person interview wide with a 4k camera, you can cheat a little bit and get 3 seperate high quality shots out of the deal (wide, close-up person a, and close-up of person b) all without losing hardly any resolution at all if you're targeting 1080p. further if you straight-up have bad frame composition when you shoot because you don't have control of the situation (stuff like live interviews) - if you shoot it a bit wide with a 4k camera, you can totally re-frame the shot in post, linking people up on the rule of thirds lines, or taking the portion of a shot you want and putting a digital overlay, or a digital background behind them... the sky is the limit - the more resolution you have to begin with, the less you lose if you choose to re-frame... and lastly, you get significantly fewer compression artifacts when you take 4k footage and compress it down to 1080p than you do when you take 1080p footage and compress it to 1080p in your post production workflow/editing. you usually get better color rendition, and a sharper looking export when you come from a situation where you have more visual information for those compression algorithms to work with. sure, it takes more computer power to make that happen, but it looks better in the long run. Personally I just watched this video at 4k on my 40" 4k computer monitor and I really appreciate it when my favorite content creators have made the transition to 4k, but I also realize that i'm something of a minority when it comes to 4k viewership as you pointed out in the video, most people are watching at 1080p. But for those who are viewing on a large 4k screen (such as on a smart tv or using a games console or other media device, or casting from a phone to the tv, or have a large 4k computer monitor) there is significant benefit for shooting and targeting 4k. On the other hand, some of this also comes down to the type of content that you're shooting. if you're a tv show fan channel and the highest quality you can get the show in is 1080p and you're showing clips and screenshots, it doesn't really make sense to make your camera footage 4k (unless you want to re-frame) as it doesn't matter how pretty your video is if your other sources are significantly lower quality. or if you're mostly doing a small frame picture in picture with a high quality secondary source (such as a weatherperson might read a weathermap) so the content itself may dictate how you shoot. lastly and most importantly, I want to make absolutely clear that it doesn't matter what your video looks like if your audio is poor. you can shoot at 320x240 and make great content if you have a decent audio workflow (mic and dac). if people can hear you clearly with high quality and you speak well, people will readily forgive substandard looking video. some folks I watch target 720p still and their content is largely educational in nature and doesn't really need high resolution to get the point across... they have good quality microphone setups and they make fantastic content. - at any point in your media creation journey you stop and think to yourself "i've got a little bit of additional capital to invest in this venture, where should i spend it to make the most impact" - lots of people would think to upgrade to a 4k camera or a fancier camera. I say NO. instead, look at making your audio the best it can be. look at microphones, lav mics, shotgun mics, dynamic mics, stands, dacs, learn about the differences between different mic setups and find something that fits your workflow to make you and/or your guests sound awesome. following that, lighting. an old lower resolution camera (even a webcam) with great lighting is generally going to look WAY better than even a high-end professional hollywood video camera with poor lighting - and lighting is usually pretty inexpensive. - get yourself a softbox or two, or an led video light or two, learn a little bit about cinematography and different strategies to light talent. this will allow you to use the equipment you have already be it a pro movie camera, a dslr/mirrorless camera, a webcam, or even your phone more efficiently and get the best out of every shot.

There’s one thing you should mention when it comes to KZbin and particularly new, small channels: you should upload in at least 1440. Why? Because only then KZbin will give you the vp9 codec which has a superior playback image quality. With 1080 you’ll only get the avc codec. Therefore it’s better to shoot 4K or upscale your 1080 footage to 1440. I wish I knew that when I started. Greetings from Germany.

QUESTION. Correct me if I’m wrong here,....but isn’t there two different codecs for KZbin videos: a higher quality and a lower quality (more compressed, lower resolution). For videos uploaded in 4K, KZbin assigns it the higher quality codec. Most screens can’t see a resolution difference between 1080p and 4K, but can definitely see the quality difference in these codecs. I know this was true last year. Has KZbin changed this? I've heard some creators shoot in 1080p and then export a 4k video to upload to KZbin. KZbin registers it as a 4k video and if it does prioritise 4k content will push it out the same, even though you recorded in 1080p. You won't have the same 4k quality, but honestly most people won't see the difference if they are watching on their phone or just streaming it in 1080p anyway.

If the 1080p file is 117MB then the 4K file should be around 4 x 117MB = 468MB, right? I think you are using different codecs for your two examples, so the numbers don't really make sense. The absolute best resolution for KZbin, and the is going to be controversial, is whatever your camera can film in it, if the highest your camera can get is 1080p then that is the "best" resolution for KZbin for you. If you are mixing landscape and talking head into one video then, more of a personal choice, down mix the higher resolution to the lower one. Basically take a 4K landscape with 1080p talking head make it all 1080p, this will give you the best talking head and a really clean landscape shot since there will be more pixels.

If you CAN shoot and edit in 4k, than do it. Watch the video at 03:00 again for my thoughts!

I’m really loving Nolan’s videos 😊 I’ve been shooting in 1080 because most of my audience watches on their phone as well

Awesome video! Thanks! So when uploading in 1080 vs 4K to KZbin, does KZbin compress your files differently and does that affect image quality? I feel like sometimes I upload 1080p however it looks sharper on my computer vs online on KZbin...not sure if my comment makes sense. 😅

I noticed this video is 2 years old - a lot can change in that amount of time. Is your guidance the same? Could be worth an updated/sequel video

Thank you for the beginner friendly 1080pm recommendation! I’m a beginner feeling person and have started on 720p using my iPhone, Raza :)

I saw a video a few weeks ago. It was suggested if you're just talking into a camera, shoot in 1080p, render and upload in 4K. If you upload in 4K and KZbin crunches it to 1080p, you get a higher quality of video than if you upload as native 1080p.

I currently shoot in 4k and export to 1080. I don't use the crop feature very often, but I do prefer the overall look. I switched to 4k full time in the last year or so with the previous 9-10 years being 1080. Just about 57% of my views are on a mobile device, about 30% on a computer, and the rest on a TV or a device connected to a TV.

I will have to check if my Cannon 70D shoots in 4k? Great to know, I have been struggling with memory and tech issues. I need to switch to 1080 for now.

If your computer is not powerful enough to edit a 4k video, you can use proxy media to edit the video and only go back to 4k resolution before export. I use Final cut pro, (I am sure other video editors have that feature as well), always shoot in 4k, edit with proxy media ( all the edits are simultaneously done to the 4k video) and then export 2 versions - one in 4k and one in 1080.

Why do you export in 4K and 1080p. Why not just export in 4K?
@MrGuitarist9891 Жыл бұрын
@@maverick8348 Because my display is 1080max. I use a 4k version for future proof only. Just in case I dont want to post a resolution I cant actually see or double check.

Great topic. 4K is useful as a production tool. If you know how to use it that way and you have the drive space and computing power to process it, it can be helpful. Delivery however is another thing. Did you know, much of broadcast TV is still 720p, and at best, are at 1080i? That's "i" (interlaced) as opposed to "p" (progressive). Is 4k emerging? Yes. Why? consumer demand brought on by marketing. Did you know your eyes can't even resolve 4K? The reason 1080 was developed was it was the max most eyes could resolve with a displayed 16:9 aspect ratio and a distance that your brain could comfortably process the image, including the periphery. There is a science behind it. Your eyes can't resolve 2.1 megapixels (1920 pixels by 1080 lines) at the appropriate viewing distance/angle. Now if you got in 4X closer than the recommended distance, you could see the pixels. That's where 4k can help. However at 4X as close you are leaving 3/4s of the screen ostensibly unviewable because it is out of your viewing periphery.

I shoot in 1080p for all talking head stuff, mainly 'cause the files are so much smaller and easier to edit. But for fancier productions, short films etc. I shoot in 4k. Sometimes I'll still export in 1080p, but I'll also shoot those in 4k. So....both.
