Too many people associate guns only with crime and death. Aside from the typical self defense argument (which I wholeheartedly support), guns can be great fun to have a day out shooting with friends and family. I feel most anti gun people aren’t familiar with that side of guns. I hope in addition to your purchases, you take time to enjoy them by taking them out to shoot. I know a lot of people who own a gun, but let it sit in a safe for years.

@@rickthe533 That's unfortunate, the ammo shortage has been a real pain, especially for new gun owners. As a college student, I was able to save up for my first gun several months before things started going downhill in March last year. When everything began to hit the fan, there wasn't a huge spike yet in ammo sales where I lived, but I knew it was coming, so I bought several boxes. I couldn't get that much because I am on a tight budget as a student, and although I have some reserves for emergency use, It's hard to afford ammo for practice.

Ricochet is some real sht, don't sleep on it. I got hit with some shards of Lead (or steel, copper, nickel etc..) that had slowed considerably from a .357 mag in my arm/shoulder area, and when something like that stings you while ppl are shooting near you, it SCARES the SHT out of you!! Edit: I wasn't badly hurt, but it cut me like glass/metal does, and it cut like an inch across the skin on my shoulder. However it wasn't fast enough go deep into my flesh.

Great tips! Not so long ago I was shooting an old steel car rim at about 50 yards with an AR. Lots of curved surfaces on that rim just caused a fragment to make a U-turn right back at me.

We shot steel in the Marine Corps and pretty close. We would have little spots of blood on our faces. Fast forward 10 or so years I'm sitting on the couch watching a movie with my wife. In the corner of my nostril there was a bump. I start picking at it and what do I pull out of my skin. A piece of copper jacket from a 9mm ball round. It was surprisingly large I will say. My wife was mortified I kept that damn thing hell I wanted to put it back. Fond memories of range days. The MP5 was fun to shoot.

Hickok, we modeled our steel range around your idea of using shepherd's crooks from the local hardware store. A bit of physics here: a large part of what prevents shrapnel from bouncing back at you is the swinging plate absorbs much of the energy/momentum of the bullet and thus it is not reflected back at you. When you shoot the coffin around 8 min in, one soda can bursts. Why? I'll tell you why: it was because that bullet impacted the coffin when the coffin was swinging back at you! All of your other shots impacted the target when it was swinging AWAY from you, which built up the stored momentum in the coffin! When the coffin is moving towards you and the bullet impacts then, the bullet's momentum is met with greater momentum in the opposite direction from the coffin, which mathematically is identical to the bullet impacting a wall that is moving towards you! This might be more intuitive if you imagine a head on collision on the road: if your truck moving 30 mph impacts a stationary truck of equal mass, much of your momentum is absorbed in the collision and the net momentum of the system after the collision is still moving in the direction as your truck was. But if instead you crash into a truck that is also moving 30mph towards you, that is mathematically equivalent to driving your truck impacting an immovable wall! If that truck you hit is now even heavier or faster than your truck, then the net momentum of the system is in the direction of the other truck, meaning you are going to have a bad day when you go from 30mph due east to 10mph due west in milliseconds.

A friend of mine was stationed on Kodiak Island in the 60's. On his day off, he walked up a beach on the bluff. With a .223 he fired into the water at a piece of floating bark, about 30 yards away, shooting down at a 20 or 25 degree angle. After shooting at the bark he got hit in the forehead, and the ricocheted bullet traveled around his skull under the skin and stopped in the back of the skull. He drove himself to the hospital where the Dr. removed the bullet. I saw his scar and have no reason to doubt him.

I never really cared for firearms for the dangers of them, though I was always curious about some of the technical details of them. Now I know target shooting is a lot of fun, and defense of the common people is immensely important. But I just wanted to say that Hickock45 is an incredible teacher. A classic, safety oriented, knowledgeable man that takes a "dangerous" subject and applies common sense and teaches anyone and everyone on the proper practice. It's why a I followed and continue to watch to this day despite not even owning a firearm. He is an example of what the gun community should be about. Many of the comments here are surprisingly (to some communities) are also examples of this as I rarely see hateful and ill tempered comments. They are all about the products, safety and just sharing experiences. We are in a period where there is a divide where more guns means more violence, and less guns means more innocents killed a difficult and seemingly impossible situation to compromise. But that sweet middle ground is people with the respect and knowledge of what he/she is dealing with like a man like this. It's about knowledge and respect towards the risks of the hobby and educating about it. It's not political, it's not race or gender, or any other politics, but about the product and only about the product and expressing safety. Much respect for honest, genuine, channels like this.

Ccw holders commit the least amount of crimes on the country, lower than actual police officers. The safest states in the country are states that allow the least amount of restrictions when it comes to the 2nd amendment and conceal carry. Really makes you "wonder why" some states are super regulated yet have the highest crime and homicide rates....

Hickock, A very good episode. You made some good points. 1. Using Hanging steel is very important. 2. Using Hardened steel is also very important. What you didn't say, and I think it is very important, is that people should hang their hardened steel targets so that the bottom of the target is further away than the top of the target. That makes the splatter hit the ground just in front of the target. There are many ways to do this. If done correctly, hardened steel hanging targets can be shot safely at fairly close range. Love your videos. Thank You. Duane

Great video that covers the basics of shooting steel. The only thing I would add is that sooner or later, you will be hit by splashback. Most of the time it will feel like a pin prick. When it happens, remember to keep the muzzle directed down range and take your finger off the trigger. You are responsible for muzzle direction no matter what happens! Like with hot brass down the shirt, I've seen people turn on the firing line creating a dangerous situation. It's more about the surprise of being hit than any actual injury caused by the splashback.

Ice makes a great reactive target. And the cleanup is easy - just wait for it. It does require some preparation, like saving some plastic containers to freeze ahead of time. If you don't like the clear/white color, then a little food coloring can be added before freezing.

Thank goodness for KZbin. If you have a question about firearms you can most likely find the answer here. This video is very informative. I recently started shooting steel at 50 and 100 yards, sometimes at 200 yards when I feel like carrying steel that far. I'm about to venture into shooting steel at close range (20 to 25 yards). I kinda figured out the answers to most of my questions base on life experience and logic. But, its nice to watch a video like this one that re-enforces my beliefs on the right way to shoot steel.

I was RO at a GSSF match at our club. I was running the plate station. 8 plates @ 11yds. My truck was parked in the pit over 25 yds away from the target array. I had a tarp on the hood. At the end of the day after running a few hundred shooters on 2 racks, the tarp on my truck was covered with fragments, mostly pieces of copper jackets. They should rule out jacketed ammo at such a stage IMHO.

Fully agree with you on the hardest steel you can get. I have one particular steel target that I have shot thousands of times with no problem, mainly .22 9mm and .38 special, and from further distances, but one day I was showing my son, which thought a 9mm was more powerful than a .38 special because it was louder, (NOT ARGUING THAT), we were discussing it because I was taking my .357 (same gun we shoot .38 special through) deer hunting and he wanted to know why I wasn't taking my 9mm, so I wanted to mess with his mind. I moved us up closer to the plate and this time I dropped in .357 Magnum instead of .38 special without him knowing. My very first shot put a dimple in the plate and the round came back and hit me in the stomach so hard I didn't know if it penetrated or not. We have never shot that close again.

I once shot a wood fence post with a .22 revolver from about 10' - 15'. The bullet hit a knot in the wood and came straight back, hitting me just below the eye (like 1" below the eye) and glanced off to the side. I was extremely blessed that it did not hit my eye or kill me. Scared the crap out of me. That was 20 yrs ago and to this day I haven't shot any fence posts or any wood with knots in it or anything that close. It is amazing how a standard lead bullet can literally bounce back with such velocity. I tend to steer clear of steel too.

Great info, thanks. I remember back in the 80's, had a friend with one of those ultra cheap Norinko surplus SKS's coming out of China. Geez, didn't we all have one of those. : You could pick one up for less than $100. Came with 500 rounds or so of 7.62x39 Steel penetrator core ammo. He decides to shoot at one of the steel supports on one of those giant electrical transmission towers from about 20 yards. I remember those supports were about a 1/2" thick. I was thinking wasn't such a great idea and absolutely not recommended, but he did it anyway. Went over there and took a look. Blasted a hole right through it. : )

Hickock, I think you covered it all. I’ve been grazed by rifle jackets coming back from craters in mild steel, and narrowly missed my eye. Like you said, hard steel and distance are your friend. Mild steel at distance or pistol only (not 5.7 or other rifle type high velocity round) are all I’ll do now. I’m not the worry wart kind, but learn from close calls. Good video, thanks for the information.

Use extra caution with kiddos and steel targets. Had a bounce back while shooting with my son where a jacketed round tumbled and stopped right up to our feet. @hickok45
@hickok45 8 жыл бұрын
The stand is generally not a problem, except if you are using these for rifle targets (.308, 5.56, etc.) out there at any range, you'll occasionally cut the shepard's hook and have to replace it. Remember, these things are designed for some other silly purpose, such as hanging plants, I guess, so they are not made of hardened steel, of course. A hot rifle round goes through them like butter.

How far away were you shooting the AR15? You definitely do not want to shoot a high-powered rifle at steel if it's close at all. I think it's recommended to be out at 100 - 150 yards at least. If the majority were as sensible and decent as this chap then there wouldn't be much of a gun control issue. Sadly it doesn't seem that way considering the gun violence and death statistics. Yes a fair bit down to criminal activity but they get their weapons down to lack of sensible storage for theft and lack of decency in some sellers. Hiscock should absolutely be mandatory viewing for all new gun owners though.

when i was training/range officer for my small urban p.d., i got some steel from a friend for targets. he thought he could use them for an h&k rifle he had. Nope, he had holes in his, so I got the left overs. I had a friend bore two holes in the, since they were close to 8x10. I used smooth head lag type bolts to secure them to sign posts, and used a sledge hammer to set them up. I did so at an angle so the target waas angled slightly from the shooter. It looked square but if you got sloppy with the front sight, the shot would slide by. Or The top was angled closer to the shooter slightly, so shots deflected down. Never got splash back. I and a bud were shooting some large steel poppers on another range and we both ruined shirts with holes and bruises on chest/belly from bounce back. Not fun. a .30 carbine solid would dent the steel, and .223 or larger just left a nice clean hole.
