I recently bought a JP Sauer William Tell stalking rifle in 8.15 x46R. The cases are made from 30-30 and dies are available. Just picking up the rifle fills me with a burning desire to be still hunting a densely wooded river bottom!

great shooting . As a fellow black powder cartridge shooter , here is what I learned . Weigh every charge to a tenth of a grain . use a drop tube of at least 2 foot , have a powder compression die , compress your powder at least a 1/16 th of an inch . fill the case full with your properly weighed powder charge then compress your powder . Use a card wad then grease cookie " I recommend spg then another card wad Then seat your bullet a few thousand of an inch from the ogive .Taper crimp with a 50 A&E sizing die . With this procedure and tuning you will be able to the accuracy you have now at 50 meters at 200 . With black powder cartridge the reloading bench is almost as important as the rifle . The more time you spend casting your slugs " measuring and weighing each slug " and the more time you put at the reloading bench the more accurate your rifle . You can be primitive reloading , but it will never reach full potential . Your black powder gun has the ability to shoot as well as a modern factory rifle if you work on loading bench

Wonderful rifle. I took my first deer with a Rolling Block in the same caliber. I reloaded the same way you showed. My "sizing die" was the chamber of the rifle, running it in and out a couple of times. This was when I was in the 8th grade, in 1973. Simpler times.

I was very impressed with your reloading method. I noticed the wax in the bullet grooves, but was rather surprised at the lack of a bullet lube/ coating, like alox or such. I'm reasonably certain there is a historical equivalent. I just love your videos. The quality and thought you put into them, really you deserve more recognition.

Hi! As a historian and an enthusiast of vintage firearms, I absolutely LOVE videos like this. I also appreciate your roots, because my maternal grandfather was from Kiel in Northern Germany. It's obvious that you love the Kipplauf.....so would I. One suggestion, if you don't mind? I know it's been done before, but I'd love to see you do a video with a pre-WWII Mauser in 7X57, which is also a pentultimate stalking rifle in its own right. I hunt deer with the 7X57 Chilean Mauser and the 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser in Louisiana and am continually fascinated by them...Please also do more reloading segments!!!!!!!!!!

It is great that you can hunt with these lovely old rifles. In Scotland this would be impossible due a minimum muzzle velocity requirement of 2450fps. In England and Wales you could use this rifle, but you would still have to use a bullet designed to expand rather than the solid lead projectile you are using there.

That is a beautiful Kipplauf rifle and a joy to see. You are probably aware of what I am about to mention, but I noticed that the first time you fired it and found that it liked the 60gr load, it grouped in the centre of the target and you had the sun over your left shoulder. Then the second time you fire formed the cases, you were in the shade and it grouped left of centre ( which would be it's true zero ) and the last time the sun was on your right and the rifle grouped way to the left. This is caused by the ball type front sight bead only reflecting the light from one side and the shooter focusing on that bright spot. I learnt this years ago and use only flat faced beads which negates this problem. It could mean a miss or wounding at longer ranges.

I have a very similar one , by Christoph Funk in 9.3x72R, and I do take it hunting. The elegance of a Hahnkipplaufpirschbuechse is second to none. I kept smiling for all of the 18 minutes. My only recommendation would be to get rid of that anachronical rubber recoil pad and install the proper basketweave horn buttplate .

Never assume fire formed cartridges are not accurate. Our original 264 Win Mag improved, developed in 1979, shoots more accurately when fire forming the case against a false shoulder to prevent the case from stretching. You just never know.

Just before the 14 minute point, you show the two types of fired cases. I am deeply puzzled. The original case has that bumpout of brass, the case head is is not flat. The new cases are of course flat, that is the universal standard. The once-fired new case base remained flat, the brass has not moved backwards despite whatever the considerable force of the test load is. So over time, does the case head deform ? Or does it remain flat ? I suppose the massive momentary load is transferred to the rifle by that portion of the rim in contact with steel. There is still that little air pocket with no brass in it . Someone with experience of firing this brass in this cartridge will enlighten me ? Thanks. Always a pleasure when a new episode shows up. Cheers.

I assume that the old 11mm Mauser cartridges were simply shaped with the non-flat case heads. I doubt large amounts of shooting would misshape a case like that.

I recently got a funk drilling 1880s 16g x16g x 11mm /43 Mauser. I found some old 11mm Mauser ammo in an auction new in box old stuff. Union metallic Corp (umc). Says 77 gr of powder and 380 grain bullet. Would this be safe to shoot in the drilling??? The 16ga fluid steel etch barrels are lined to shoot modern 28g shells. It is Sweet gun and I want to shoot the elephant killer 11mm but worried this is too strong round for gun. Gun is tight and of high quality but probably 1885-1890 mgfer.
