As a 'well-endowed' female archer, these are all good points for women (or 'well-endowed' men I suppose) who are starting archery. As to the linear pull into the side of the breast, which I do, it helps serves as another 'anchor' point to make sure I am at full draw with the correct anchor. Thanks for the video and the laughs!

Sport bra's are my friend, as a normal bra would come up and poke everywhere and the straps tends to slide off. I have long hair and forgot to tie it up once, it wasn't nice to shoot that way. I now have a spare hair elastic in my bow bag, and some hairpins to get shorter hair out of my eyes.
@danielled17208 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on both comments. I can only testify for average endowment, but sports bras are a chest saver. Also, I found that the chest guards made the problem worse. They don't cover the middle of your chest. Instead they make the string land in the middle and you get stung on the inside of your breast. The way sensei changed the draw seemed like a good idea too. I was keeping my hair down until one windy day when my hair became wrapped around the feathers on the arrow. I looked so stupid.

Thank you!!! I'm just starting out in archery, and I'm a 38F cup. I'm 5'10", with a 29" draw length (yep, I get the Amazon jokes all the time), so using shorter bows isn't really an option. I also have my heart set on recurves and longbows. I have literally zero interest in compounds. The very first time I drew my bow, I realized it was a problem. Of course, as an F cup, these kinds of problems are common, and I'm used to looking for ways around them. Thank you for this advice! I've already ordered a chest guard that'll fit me, and I've found that opening my stance works well, too. Opening the stance creates more clearance for the chest. My advice for anyone with this problem is a chest guard, a sports bra that is a size too small (and possibly wearing more than one at a time. When I go running, I wear 3 sports bras, all a size too small), and an open stance. It's what worked for me, so it should work for DDDs and DDs, too.

well done. At my club there are many young women which is great to see. Chest protectors are definitely made with men in mind and their fit is less than optimal with a woman with a average to larger cup size. A manufacturer could make a bit of a killing if they designed with the cup differential in mind, perhaps allowing a bit more compression. My trainer told me there is a woman in Germany who can make custom protectors.

Women fencing will often use a plastic chestguard to reduce the pain of a fairly hard metal sword poking boobs. Whilst it won't do too much to protect from the side it will certainly give plastic armour to save from the pain of bowstring hitting boobs. I'm not an archer so I couldn't say if it gets in the way, gets uncomfortable, or makes technique difficult but its certainly something to consider if that is the problem.

I can relate to the problem very well. I have shoot forn the best part of my life. A good few years ago i was doing very well and attended an intrrnational F.I.TA, A WHOLE DAYS SHOOT! I had a few weeks earlier purchased a new bow, a Portland Marksman with quite a draw weight. I practiced like crazy to be use to the bow, but as somebody pointed out, I was not at my full draw because I was curling round the bow. I took thevadvise to heart and made every effort to be in the upright position when at full draw. Now inmposession of this informaton I started to open up to the bow, but withvery little time before the shoot. The day arrived and I turned up ready to give my best, the very first arrow left and found its mark much to my pleasure, however a few arrows into this shoot and I found the the factvthat I was now using all the bow, it decided to teach me a lesson. Every draw was at its best but was now bitting me right were it hurt. This effected my score and my ego and at the break our team leader came up and said that he had seen the look of pain on my face, He asked to have a look, I was black and blue forbthe whole area, and clearly notnin a good state to carry on. It took four weeks for the colouring to go away, and also gave me time to go to thecshop and buy a chest Guard which is still very much in use. I did learn that this van be quite dangerours, mostly for the ladies as it can burst blood vessel like crazy, soit you have a bow string that is intent to cut chunks out of you wear a chest guard!!!!!

This reminds me of my first computer science class in college, wherein my male prof made a point to tell everyone the department supports the female students, and we belong in computer science if we want to be there. As a woman it is very appreciated when men are welcoming to us in male-dominated spaces. Of course we don't need your approval to be there, but it makes everything much less stressful, and I would even call it mentally healing. I like how frank he is with the advice about breasts too. It is what it is!
@lorinichols18474 жыл бұрын
Helpful, and thanks for addressing the topic, but once you finally hear the explanation, it's quite intuitive, so probably could have been much shorter, leaving time for details about sizing and draw weight in male dominated sport. All the "how to choose your first bow" videos seem to assume male size and strength, and the lowest draw my local shop has for me to try is 40#. I am petite but strong and fit, yet also have a rotator cuff issue I don't want to stir up. Archery has turned out to be a great pandemic pastime for me since I have a huge yard! Grateful!!

Love this video man, as a skinny guy I obviously haven't had this problem, but I will definitely refer anyone who does! Quick question, when using a bow that is designed for a slightly shorter draw than the one that's more natural for the archer, what ways can you compensate?
@jjaska8 жыл бұрын
Compound or recurve/longbow type? Easier for compound to compensate but really difficult for others.
@theflyingcrud8 жыл бұрын
+jjaska oh sorry, I should have specified. I shoot recurve
@jjaska8 жыл бұрын
What is your draw length and how short is your bow then? Unless your bow is seriously short to you, you usually can draw it to your max anyway. I would not recommend doing any compensation unless the bow has really light draw weight.

Sports bras are brilliant and so worked out side of breast is great for the very well endowed. One technique shown was to create a 'hollow' by sticking your rear end out a little and leaning the upper body in (yes, this was taught by an 'instructor' who was female). Very bad for balance, stance and posture but you miss the breasts and forearm slaps. Not good.

Hmmm I've just come across this problem with a beginner shooter with particularly large breasts. She is so well endowed that to reach an acceptable anchor point the string actually distorts around the left breast. Perhaps that won't happen when she is able to shoot a higher poundage, but at the moment the 18lb bow string curves around the boob at full draw.

what is the maximum draw weight on recurve bow an average woman can handle?
@richharding91357 жыл бұрын
Adriana Kuzmikova There isn't really a limit - at the Olympics and world championships level, most women are shooting in the 40's for DW, but there are a few, like Khatuna Lorig, who shoot over 50lbs. That's higher than the majority of the recurve men, and she shoots just as proficiently! At my club, we've got recurve shooters who are shooting 22-38 on the fingers, so that covers the normal range of general archers who don't train every day, but in the end, it comes down to what they feel comfortable with.
