Love these cars. Have an 88 in pearl white. And you didn't even touch on the technology that car has. Look in the manual for light substitution. If a low beam headlight is burnt out it will turn on the fog light on the failed side. If a blinker is burnt out it will flash the park light. It was the first car I know of with lighting control modules. There's like 13 in it with a data wire between them all. Output Switching Modules. Brilliant! It's a maintenance nightmare, but still one of the most unique cars out there. And if you dare take on the challenge, they are very affordable to buy now. Maintaining them though, better have a thick wallet!

Awesome video! Allantes are super cool. I believe the DNR button is "Dolby noise reduction", meant for reducing hiss/background noise while playing cassettes.

The exhaust sound on these cars is one of the best out there, period. I remember going to the dealership just to gawk when these first came out. It was like looking at a spaceship. I'm glad to see young people appreciating these cars. It seems like boomers are too stuck in their BMW -s-God mindset from the 80s to have any objectivity at all. These cars were pretty quick, especially for the time.

My dad has one in a light blue metallic and I love it so much. I drive it near and there when he lets me and I love it. So comfortable to drive as well. He was given it to by his dads dad. He said it was sitting in the garage for a while I forgot the exact years but Ik it was in the double digits. Went up to New Jersey to get it

I recently purchased a black ‘91 Allante with beige interior. There is a lot for me to learn about this car and your review is the best I’ve seen so far. Lots of info on the car I didn’t know and I love the digital gauges too. The only option...the car phone!!! Gold cassette tape! The owners manual. So awesome! The enthusiasm you have for the car increases my own appreciation. I loved all the context with the ‘80’s excesses being thrown in. The uniqueness of the Allante is what appealed to me. Thank you Zack for doing this and I’m eager to drive the car this weekend. You have a great voice and I enjoyed listening to you.

The 93 Allante (last year for it) was actually the only one that got the Northstar. IIRC the Northstar was actually developed for it and debuted exclusively in the Allante that year, quickly becoming an option in the Deville, Eldorado, and Seville (I think) and then quickly again becoming standard in those cars.

TWILIGHT SENTINEL refers to the automatic power off delay of the headlights, which is adjustable. DNR= DOLBY NOISE REDUCTION which reduces background noise when playing cassettes.

that is a very rare allante, i believe there were less than 50 that the phone option was put on. it’s also extremely clean, and if it’s a late vin 89 it also has the fixed soft top issue that the early 89, 88, and 87 had.

"Twilight Sentinel" was the name given to the sensor system that turned on the headlights at dusk. My mother's 1977 Cadillac Coupe De Ville had it.

Having an Allante myself I really enjoyed and shared this video. I'd like to make a suggestion. When you did a walk around of the car with your camera there was a noticeable up and down movement. You might try using the camera car as a dolly as you go around the car. You are very good at what you are doing.

Also, "DNR" (in medical terms) is "Do Not Resuscitate." In other words, "don't try to save me." Since the target market for this car was older people... well... maybe that's what they wanted? JK - it's Dolby Noise Reduction. I'm old. I know. ;)

Twilight Sentinel was GM’s version of automatic lights. There were light sensors that monitored daylight and turned on not just the headlights, but all the lights which normally come on when you turn on the headlight switch.

I had a 1990 Allante loved it. 😍 got looks and inquiries all of the time. Check the tech on this it is very cool. It is the first production vehicle with traction control. When an exterior light burns out the computer compensates for it. I hope his grandson keeps it and cares for it.

They come cheap but be prepared for expensive repairs. In this respect the Allante is no different than any other 30 yo car. I know.

I had both a Cadillac, and an oldsmobile with twilight sentinel. My Benz had it, as well as my Pathfinder, but it the feature went by another name on both products, and the Pathfinder couldn't claim that feature was on the truck as an option in the 80's... That kind of technology was quite above it's station back then. Definitely an example of automotive trickle down tech.

I don't think the major issue was the price. It was the fact that for a little more money you could get a Mercedes SL which was better in every way. The Lexus SC wasn't a thing in the US until '93 when the Allante was discontinued, and it was only available as a coupe until ~2002, so that doesn't compete.

Most torque of any front drive up til that time? 1970 Eldorado fwd had 400 up and 550 lb ft of torque.

Pininfarina also designed some Japanese cars. The most common example was the Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin. That was designed primarily for Europe though.

Shouldn't have to roll into these cars. The 4.5 with the lower gearing on the phase two cars like that one is really responsive. It's not a race car by today's standards. But more responsive than many cars that are actually faster. The pedal thing you mentioned sounds like a dirty throttle body or cable. It's not completely smooth but should feel like a step you can feel.

The 1989 is my favorite Year for this car. the 93 with Northstar was problematic and no longer had the recaro seats. The 1987-88 had the crappy 4.1l V8. The 89-92 had the 4.5, but I like the 89 as it did not have airbags giving it the nice looking sleek steering wheel.

Nice review, but you need to know some history before you start ridiculing terms. Yes, those were the headlight switches, but Cadillac buyers since the 1960s would know that the Twilight Sentinal were lights that turned on when the photocell detects dusk or tunnel conditions, and automatically turns the lights on, and the timer could be set to turn the lights off after a specified time to illuminate your way from car to front door, etc. I think most people buying one of these would already know what Twilght Sentinal was from previous purchases or just being familar with the cars. Of course, the salesman would demonstrate it to eliminate any confusion for an uninformed potential owner. The two things that worked against the Allante were 1) the "Air Bridge" flying components to Turin on specially outfitted Lufthansa and Alitalia 747s, and returning with finished bodies for final assembly at Hamtramck near Detroit...its lacklustre publicity that was a foolish extravagence on the part of GM when funds could have been spent where it would be evident in the car (like a power top!) and 2) the other factor working against it was FWD....oh, how I hated GM's wholesale shift to FWD beginning around 1980 with the Citation. Maybe for economy cars and basic transportation, but for a Cadillac???

The 4.1, 4.5 & 4.9 are newer versions of the Buick 215, unfortunately, they are garbage engines that were underpowered and weak, GM later sold the patents to Landrover. A small hex shaft drives the distributor and oil pump; the shafts were notorious for stripping out inside the oil pump, leaving the engine running with no oil pressure. They are also impossible to rebuild without the right machine that torques the crank shaft and head bolts simultaneously.

Wellll, it wasn't even close to the most torque ever in a FWD V8. That title did (and probably still does) belong to the 70/71 500 Eldo and their 400 (real world 500) ftlbs. Twilight Sentinel appeared in the 50's and was the system that controlled the headlights automatically. Set it and forget it. DNR "Dolby Noise Reduction"

The Allanté didn't sell well because Cadillac's management didn't want to wait until it was ready for production. As a result, public interest dissappeared when they found out that: 1) The fabric top leaked everywhere, 2) The first year it had a 4.1 L engine that produced only 170 hp, 3) The fabric top was unnecessarily complex to operate (see item 1 above), 4) The stereo system could develop horrible noises in some cases that required complete replacement. Truth is, most owners can tolerate shoddy worksmanship and a stratospheric price if the car is very fun to drive (just look at the Jaguar and Lotus offerings of that era). The Allanté, just like the Buick Reatta or the DeLorean, wasn't fast enough to justify being sold on looks or hype alone.
