When I was young I worked with a guy, who on his very first day on the job had his arm broke by narrow bar hanging out the back of the headstock. He was standing to the left of the supervisor who was demonstrating how to use the lathe and change the speeds and the supervisor accidently left the machine on top speed after his demonstration and when he started it up the centripetal force bent the bar and it broke my friends arm !! Thanks again for your video's, I always manage to pick up one or two little nuggets of knowledge

Us gunsmiths use these quite a lot for barrel work as we center the barrel both ends ( clocked to the bore ) a tip I would make is when drilling the bolt holes do a 3 and 4 pattern , because you can bet the next long job will be 6 sided. And if turning work that is already finished to bright then recess those bolts and fit some copper pads .great prodject keep them coming.

On my Taiwan dividing head you can disengage the worm & spin the head freely, & there are also 24 index holes directly on the faceplate w/ an index pin - if your head had this feature it might save some handle twisting?? Also, wondering if it would be beneficial to reduce the speed ramp-up time on your VFD - I was watching to see if the tap would disengage before it stopped at the bottom of the hole! & this speeds things up as well.. I have not tried power tapping in my mill yet, it only has permanently engaged fine feed on the quill - but I have a couple of tapping- head-like devices sitting on the shelf waiting for cleanup/fixing, to eventually try. Thanks for sharing this interesting work!

A really nice job of boring and fitting the spiders to the lathe spindles but had you thought of mounting a 3 jaw chuck on the rear end of the spindle instead? That's what I have done on both my lathes since I do long bar / tube (hydraulic cylinders and rods) work daily. The boss of the 'top hat' shaped chuck backplate is split length ways and for half the circumference just behind the chuck mounting flange with a single clamping bolt (two on the medium and three on the largest lathe which has a 3.25" spindle bore) which holds the assembly in place.. Yes, it is a larger and more more expensive solution than your spiders since one has to source a 3 jaw chuck and reduce most of a piece of 10" diameter barstock to swarf but much more convenient in use.

Thanks . If i was doing long stuff all the time , i would probably go that way . I have seen that set up on the large Oil Field lathes . Cheers 👍

Hi Max, the Bulldog tapping chuck might be a bit of mission to repair finding suitable friction material. They probably used asbestos interwoven with bronze fibres, the ears must be robust enough to withstand the torque. When you said you were going to make a riser block I thought it was for the BP, then you continued to say it was for the fixed steady Just a question, can you buy 1 7/8 threaded rod to save all the work in making it. In the refinery we used B7 threaded rod and just cut to length.
@swanvalleymachineshop10 ай бұрын
I might try some industrial brake friction material from the brake reline company we use . The cost is $ 300 for B7 1 7/8 , i will make my own ! I only need a few bits 300 long , but i will screw cut the entire bar . 👍

What is the matter with chucking your tap (not real tight or not real loose) in a Jacobs key style drill chuck Max. That's how we do it out here in the woods when there is no room for the tap head or lack of a dedicated driver (which are fairly easy to make if need be). Curious to your thoughts on that. Of course a nice sharp tap is necessary. I hate dull taps and set them aside.
@swanvalleymachineshop10 ай бұрын
I have been doing that for ages , mostly with smaller taps because it's quicker ! Tapping head grips the taps properly so they don't slip , i am not big on over tightening a drill chuck to hold a tap . Esp with more than one hole to do . Cheers 👍

Max, what kind of (speed?) control(s) do you have on your Bridgeport? When you were using the tapping head, it looked like the control tapped, slowed down, and reversed by itself -- without you having to push buttons or turn cranks. Also, as an example of how much walking around in a Shop to do a job, when I was working (about 15-20 years ago now in this example), we did a "5S" cleanup of a jet engine assembly shop. A coworker and I were tasked to follow one Artisan around for me to write down everything he did (& why) and my coworker had a measuring device to measure how far the Artisan had to walk around to gather parts, tools, fixtures, consumables, etc., to perform his task. To make a long story a bit shorter, the Artisan literally walked around about half a mile before he could start & complete his task -- and the assembly shop was no larger than your new workshop! We arranged for him to have everything within arm's reach to perform his task and a half-day task turned into less than an hour. The same was done for every Artisan in the assembly shop and their turn-around-time on assemblies dropped to less than about 1/4th of what it had been. Other teams worked with all other shops in the jet engine building and did the same, greatly reducing the time it took to repair an engine and rebuild it, therefore greatly increasing the number of engines needed by the fleet.
@swanvalleymachineshop10 ай бұрын
Thanks . The Bridgeport has a VFD with an auto reverse function when the stop button is pushed . It takes the spindle a while to wind down when shut off , but that is the way i have it programmed . I do not like instant braking with the VFD , not good for the machine . 👍
@TedRoza10 ай бұрын
Gday Max. Excellent video with the spiders overal. A question if that's ok. 1. With the tapping jig when you stripped it down, why didn't you replace the MT2 shaft & make an R8 shaft in it's place, then you would have the extra room required.
@swanvalleymachineshop10 ай бұрын
Then it would not fit the lathe . 👍
@WilliamChitham10 ай бұрын
