@@TaylordriftsI’d like to see it. I’m an HVAC tech and appreciate the tools. I’ve reduced my tools dramatically over the years. I can fix 99% of everything with a tiny tool pouch. Not necessarily the best tools for the job but quality multi purpose tools because I need to carry them everywhere. Weight reduction was key. Different for a shop setup but still purpose built tool list.

You could run the speaker wires through the peg board holes in the lower corners. That would hide them well. Even if you had to drill one hole in each lower corner if the wires were a little to big you wouldn’t ever need to use them lower corner holes anyway. Love the shop updates it’s a dream shop for sure. Keep down what you’re doing

As a retired mechanic that visited the Snap-On and Mac tool trucks every week for years, I appreciate your comments and respect for quality tool boxes. I still own my Snap-On boxes - bottom, middle and top at nearly 6 feet tall. All the drawers are full of Metric and Imperial tools, many duplicate and triples which were necessary in the flat rate mechanic world. Love your tool room on wheels (new box) hate the green.

Super impressed at how far the shop has come. What a great layout! You should add a tray above the pack-out boxes on your fab table so you don't fill them with metal shavings and can catch them all.

I feel you should just make the side with your compressor your wiring and hose building spot. That will allow you to buy more tools for crimping, etc, and build a small table. That also would allow you to reuse them toolboxes like you are currently trying to do and the packout boxes. That would be my two sense of making use of that area while keeping that hangout area still available.

Now you just need to get that welding screen up, so you dont roach whatever car is on the bottom with welding slag, and get that compressor outside so you can work in peace, lol. For the pliers drawer: I'm not sure if you've got the depth in that specific drawer, but I have a rack for my pliers that holds them on their side rather than flat. It's a much more efficient use of the full drawer volume and you can fit like 3x more pliers in the same space.

When I started wrenching back in 85ish I started with craftsman and it did the job for a while. As I went on I outgrew the box and needed something bigger but snap-on/mac was out of my price range so I just kept packing it. In 93-ish I was able to afford a snap-on box,I still have it,its a Harely 90th anniversary box. I was able to sell my craftsman box to a younger guy just starting. In 2000 I bought a bank and a half top/bottem box for for 2500,the top box was new and the bottom was lightly used. Like you said, you can tell the difference between a tool truck box and EVERY OTHER brand. I used the box everyday so investing in a quality box was a no brainer.

Definitely should have put the stacker in the left corner so its a straight shot from the left bay door. Then have 1 big loft and you have the rear rollup door to have a "hybrid" fab area for the noise and welding gas to stay out of the shop more. Im sure it would feel more open that way
@cameron7187
@cameron7187 2 ай бұрын
Having a large covered work space definitely could've been cool. He talked about having a primary and secondary toolbox meant one became forgotten and definitely feels like there's the potential for that to happen with the loft bays
@chrisgilmour831
@chrisgilmour831 2 ай бұрын
Picturing this in my head actually sounds soo good. You could use a curtain made of welding shield plastic underneath the loft for keeping smoke/sparks/dust contained under the loft for fab projects. You'd have clear access to the rear door with out having clearance issues on with the stacker. You'd have an open spacious loft you can build isles in one spot, then the rest for hanging. Fab tools and bench under the loft, and mechanic tools in the big chest out in the main shop by the hoists

I've never understood the reasoning behind the stacker going in the middle either. I could maybe understand it if he enclosed the rear lean-to.

You should make the railings for the loft like a stake body truck. So they protect you when you’re up there not trying to lift stuff up and down. But when you need to you can simply lift it out of its holders and put it aside while you put your objects up there. Then slide it back in the slot when your done

Incredible work on the shop. The wooden table heading out the door shows just how far you have come since you moved to this house. What would be cool to see is some dedicated movable racking where you can put all the parts needed for a build so that they are accessible when you need them but tucked away when you don’t.

One idea for additional storage that is often overlooked in hutches; magnets. For a box that is almost always stationary, you can put magnets on the back side of the door and put your most used wrenches, ratchets, pliers, etc hanging under the door, but still shallow and out of the way of reaching to the back.

Mount your independent socket rails to a metal place. I used 16g and put screws up from the bottom. You can now stand every rail up. And won’t have to hold the rail to pull a socket off. Way better than free standing or having some lay down.

The right side of the loft needs a door to a outdoor deck. Pour a nice stamped concrete patio outside below it. Then have regular steps that go up along the side of the shop to it. So if your standing at the side entrance door just about 5 feet to your right you have steps upto the deck. You could so some outdoor storage cabinets below the steps. You then have a covered shaded lowered patio and nice deck above overlooking your house and your property. Then you also have walking access to the lofts from outside. Just make the deck on the outside the same length of the loft on the inside. That'd be so cool and you'd have an outdoor chill spot on both levels aswell as loft access without going inside the shop. If you needed to carry a box or something to the loft you don't have to use R2 or walk the spiral stairs and use the bridge. I'd hang those string lights where each looks like a mini later under the the deck to light up the lower patio. Have a litte outdoor tiki bar chill area on the lower patio Then the upper deck off the loft just have a chill deck with maybe a small grill and some outdoor table and chairs with an umbrella. I just think that'd be a cool easy addition that has multiple benefits and ads some optional access points. Another idea would be removing the rear covered storage roof and building a elevated deck in its place. Then build a new roof that matches the roofline of the shop. Then frame that deck in and make a room with doorways at the back of each loft into it. Then if you don't want to use the bridge just walk into that room and loop around to the other loft. Then you have that entire back room for whatever. It's 30ft wide by however deep your covered storage is.

A guy ordered it, didn't like to colors he picked out for it but already paid half of it off up front and took the hit and ordered another one. So his loss was my big ass gain lol. I paid 22k for mine and the dude literally never even put a single tool in it. It was storm gray with purple trim. They are under just over 30k for most of the options. But it must be nice to have the kind of money to drop 40k on a box and lose out 20k in under a month and just not care because you didn't pay enough attention when ordering lmao. Oh and yes, damn near half of it was empty but my box I traded in was paid off and I got 18k for it on trade so there was absolutely no way in any universe I am not getting a Mr Big for under 5k out of pocket.

Nice box and upgrades Taylor! The locking drawer on the Matco is used by a lot of techs at shops. Keep paperwork, and anything else sensitive in there without locking the whole box. Looks like you could remove the lid if you don't mind doing light damage to the box. @@spinpop01 it should! Which will be nice for playing the sim because it gets hot when playing because the computer. Screen. Motion rig. Wheelbase. Plus you’re basically driving. So ideally we can crank it to icy up there for that.

I just got my first tool box, the Harbor Freight 5-drawer cart, and I was just as excited as you were to get the giant Matco box 😂 Obviously I don't have as many tools as you, but all my tools were just on shelves and peg boards before so it's a huge upgrade.

One thing people always forget about the entry level toolboxes compared to snap on, mac and matco is the height/depth of the top drawer. a lot of them arent even tall enough to stack sockets on organizers so they end up laying them on there side.

I swear just like in any video game with customization. all the time is spent on the aesthetics of things. I would gush and just stare at and think of all the possibilities with this box lmao. there is something beautiful about having everything in once place and well organized. I love a box like this for model making. (I can't afford to mod real cars lol)

about your awning, you need some angle on there to direct the water away from or to where you want the water to go, no much maybe 2 inches of drop. also, you could use tensile rods or steel cables to support it from above, its not too much in your face and you can take that support beam away

The awning is a nice touch, however that downspout will channel all of the water into one big stream that will eventually wear on the yard and create a hole. You should really get some kind of gutter and route the water into a downspout and onto a concrete downspout 'splash block' that will take the brunt of the force and in turn not tear up your yard. As an added bonus you can point the splash block away from your garage and house.

I’m sure you thought of it, but if you have a big wiring project those stairs are going to do your head in and make you want to pull those boxes back down

If you add a new receptacle box on the right and left then you can put a new piece of conduit between them to get the box back more flush to the wall.

So I work at a body shop and had a snap on tool box that was 72" traded it for a matco and it's way more of a box. The matco has weight to it when you started down your ramp I don't know how it didn't take off with you. Also the matco drawers can be adjusted on the sliders for different tension and adjusting them to what weight is in the drawers makes them feel even better. Although the game changer for me was getting a nice ish roll cart to be by my side with my common tools or what I need. Also a bought a big light off Amazon that has a switch and I mounted it to the lid. Ive went thru 2 or 3 matco lights for the tool box. I would like to build a car stereo in my box running off a computer power supply.

Like the box colors a lot! Would have opted for the snap on epiq just for the power drawer. Love being able to keep all the Milwaukee power tools in there along with the chargers and batteries
