Many, many years ago, I used Erno Laszlo black mud face soap for a while because it was a recommended "secret" beauty tool used by only the few "in the know." I'd go to Macy's or Saks to buy it and the sales pitch by the beauty rep was always the same, whispered in a conspiratorial tone: "This is so good, other beauty sales consultants come over here to buy it." This always happened and I always believed them! I have no idea if they're still doing this. It was a very nice soap, by the way. :)

Yes! Reno Laszlo was probably the first skin care system I used when I got out of school & had my first real job! The black soap, the splashing, seems like the toner I used had something in it (powder?) so that it dried down matte & helped absorb oil. I didn’t use anything we saw in the video, tho. I’m always hesitant to buy skincare in TJ Maxx, Marshall’s or Ross. I feel like it’s there cause it didn’t sell anywhere else! Plus I hate to have to dig through stuff to find the big Gotcha!! 🤣

Erno Lazlo was a Hungarian dermatologist who reportedly produced the first dermatologist skincare range. He treated Hollywood stars Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn and other famous people like Truman Capote and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, at the Erno Lazlo Institute in NYC, on Fifth Ave. If you search "Erno Lazlo face splashing technique" you will see more info. and you will see that his face cleansing method is not one which Dr Dray would approve, including rinsing one's face with tolerable hot water until it turns the colour of a tomato! I remember reading a double page newspaper feature about him in the 80's, he died in 1973, but a skincare range under his name still continues. 👱‍♀️❤

Holy hell, those bar soap mesh things, that takes me back to me growing up in eastern Europe in the 1990s. Liquid soap was just not avaiable so every public bathroom basically had this mesh thing with soap in it hanging next to the faucet. Vividly remember how I was always grossed out by it, even as a kid. Wild times

We had gross soap too, and actually had to buy a piece of toilet paper from the person sitting at the entrance of the public toilet. Had to pay the entrance fee, and they would give us toilet paper. The toilets are squat. It is in Uzbekistan. Travelled to Kazakhstan a few years back. They had the same system in the public bathroom at the main train station in the capital! The person that collects the fee was sitting in the bathroom! With a table and eating her lunch! I was beyond shocked and felt sorry for the lady! It was weird that the public bathroom in such a place was not free and the worker looking after it had to sit inside. Here in Canada public bathrooms in shopping malls are very very clean thank god

The ones near me look like a pit and the few products they offer have been opened and "sampled". :-( The only skincare items I buy here or at TJ Maxx are cheap bottles of micellar water to clean my makeup brushes. It's especially useful to clean my foundation and concealer brushes. :)

At 2.02- Ahem, yes, I am a philosophy girl. The founder, Christina Carlino, also founded Biomedic back in the 80’s. This is an excellent cleanser that does all that it says. If it didn’t QVC would’ve sued them a long time ago. I know plastic surgeons helped with the formulation of this product & stores sell one every 15 seconds or something. It’s the premiere selling cleanser in the US. I’ve been using this for years & it’s been a game changer for me, because I really couldn’t find a decent cleanser that made such a difference for my skin.

Its crazy how there are SOOOO many products out there. I used to use Merle Norman yrs ago. Then stopped. I broke out down the road I broke out because of poor diet, weather, lifestyle etc. I was told use chanel, philosophy all these name brands that were expensive. I wound up going back to merle norman cleansing lotion and my face cleared the up! The bottle was huge and was like $20 well well worth it. Sometimes simple things work best. I dont use the cleanser anymore just because but I would recommend to those who have some issues. Not sure what dr. Dray would say but my clear skin approves!!

Honest question......why is buying facial products (scrubs or tools) to exfoliate the skin seem to be looked down on as potentially causing issues, but we can do things like microdermabrasion and chemical peels which both seem much harsher on the skin then a scrub/tool?

Funny that. It is just the opposite for me. I have hard water and sulfate-free or sulfate-mild? Oh no, forget it. I do have a scalp that has SD (seborrheic dermatitis). But the only thing that works here is a harsh SLS/SLES shampoo, and I have never seen any soap scum left behind, on the contrary, that happens to me with sulfate-free or sulfate-mild. It, however, might also be the way my scalp is; there is that!

What about all those plant extracts (not oils) in the "fragrance free" products? Is that cause for concern for those of us with sensitive skin? I see that all the time and generally avoid if there are too many listed but I'm no doctor. Am I being overly cautious?

Having used Erno Lazlo 30 years ago it’s a tribute to corporate greed to see how what were once classic European skin care lines are now over burdened with products whose value is questionable. The same can be said of Clarins, which at one time had a mild cleanser, toner, and moisturizer as it’s ‘regimen’. Erno Lazlo had a double cleanser ( oil, then mild fatty soap) and a moisturizer. That’s it.
