This video is designed to be a guide, please note that other complications may exist that aren't addressed in this guide. While we always strive to provide accurate and detailed information, we can't guarantee that it will fix your TVs issues. ShopJimmy is not responsible for and damage or harm that you may cause to yourself of TV during the repair process. Try all repairs and troubleshooting at your own risk. Be sure to take all of the proper safety precautions.
In this video we will show the process of how to replace the LEDs in LG TV model numbers that start with 50LN. While all of the models do not use the exact same LEDs, the process should be very similar in these models. This can also be used as a general tutorial showing how to replace LED strips. When replacing LED strips, you will have to remove the panel. Removing the panel can be very difficult, as the panel is extremely . If you damage the panel during the replacement process, you will have to get a new TV.
I will remove the back cover.
Disconnect the two ribbon cables from the T-Con board and the two other wires from the IR sensor.
Disconnect the bezel from the clips and then lift the bezel to remove it. Your T-con board may have a cover over it that will need to be removed before disconnecting the ribbon cables.
Remove the screws that hold the panel brackets in place. After you have removed all of the screws for each bracket, you can remove the bracket.
Slide the scan boards out and temporarily tape them to the panel.
Once again the TV panel is fragile, be sure to be very cautious with the panel to be sure it does not crack or break.
Use two thin pieces of plastic or something similar to get underneath the panel. Be sure not to touch the underside of the panel with your hands. If you do not have thin plastic sheets, you can try using a few sheets of printer paper on each side of the panel to lift and remove it.
Lift it away from the TV and set it aside on a non-abrasive surface.
Undo the clips on all sides holding the filter frame in place.
There are two light filters, tape them together in two of the corners and then lift them from the TV.
Then squeeze the plastic clips on the risers in order to remove them. This TV has 4 of them.
We can now remove the reflector.
Disconnect the small cable on the distributor board and then remove the board.
The LED strips are held in place by double sided tape. Use a 5 in 1 tool or a putty knife to carefully remove the strips from the light case.
After you have removed all of the LED strips, install the replacement distributor board and secure it to the light case with the screws. Also, be sure to connect the cable to the distributor board.
In order to help your replacement LED strips adhere to the light case. It is recommended to use double sided tape on the backside of each of the LED strips.
Connect the LED strip to the distributor board, and then adhere the strip to the light case, then connect the second strip for that row.
Be sure to use the correct strips in the correct places. These strips are labeled as R1, L1, R2 and L2. The R1 connects on the top strip to the distributor board, and then connect L1 to that strip and then R2 and L2 below that. There may also be labels on the light case as well to help guide you.
It is recommended to test the LEDs before re-assembling the TV.
Reinstall the reflector and 4 riser clips to hold it in place.
Put the light filters back in place and remove the tape securing them together.
Reinstall the filter frame.
Now, reinstall the panel.
Next, put the 4 panel brackets back in place and secure them with the screws.
Before installing this panel bracket, remove the tape holding the scan board to the panel, and slide them back into place.
Now, we can reinstall the bezel.
Reconnect the two wires from the IR sensor and two ribbon cables from the t-con board.
Check that all of the connectors are secure before placing the back cover on the TV.
There you have it, we have shown how to replace the LEDs in this LG TV.

Great tutorial and great product from ShopJimmy. Bought this broken tv off Craigslist for $40. Parts and shipping for 12 new LED strips and double sided tape was $80. So all in this $600 TV only cost me $120. SCORE!!

Just replaced the entire LED strip set in my 5 year old 47" LG with ShopJimmy's product. This video and the product made everything go great. It works perfectly now. Since only one LED was burned, I'll save the rest of the old strips for any future problems, but I'm guessing these new ones will probably last 5 years, too. (Who knows what TVs will be like in 5 years). 5 stars for ShopJimmy! BTW, the new strips already had self adhesive on them with peel paper strips.

Great walk through (Toshiba 50l 1350U). My tv had 4 plastic risers as described, but two with a straight tip and two curved tip. I didn't see how they came out, couldn't find any reference, so I just guessed when they went back in. *** Take the warning about the panel being thin and fragile to heart, especially when putting it back in because it needs to be very tightly aligned. Don't force it (like me, 3 inch crack in the upper left corner, but barely noticable :) ****

Thanks for making this process so easy to follow. I replaced the light strips and the backlight is now clearly working. The issue now is I can't get anything to show on the screen, no inputs, no menu, nothing. Is there a chance I reconnected the ribbons or something else wrong and that's causing the issue, or is something else wrong with my tv?

Thanks for the informative vid. I used your tutorial to replace a single strip about a year ago, now I've had two other strips with defective leds. I just purchased a full set from your eBay store, and hope to get a few more years out of this tv. It'll be nice to have the older ones that are still good laying around too. Question, I understand that you say to update to latest version of software. If I already have the latest, is it best just to re-initialize the set to factory settings, and then lower the brightness and backlight settings? Thanks again for the info AND the led's. Oh, and this time, I'll tape the screens, lol....what a pain to line up, but it was successful. G2G, these dark spots are messin' with me eyes........

I thought leds were supposed to last years and yet this is such a common issue. We are in 2018 surely they can use better more reliable technology. Imo it all comes down to greed in the end. They want us to keep buying new TVs.

A question for you. I have a 47" LG tv that started flashing. On, off, on, off. Sound is fine and picture seems OK when it flashes. I have replaced all three boards on the back. One post indicated that maybe some LED's have gone bad causing the ballast to reset. Would you agree? If so would you replace all LED's or try to figure out which are bad. Thanks

Had the same problem here. It's a series of burnt out LEDs. You can replace one or two and see if it turns back on but the best method is to replace them all. If they are the original LEDs, they'll continue to burn out one by one until the TV turns off again.

Can i use super glue to stick cap over led in led tv?
@currentuserjade
@currentuserjade 6 жыл бұрын
Most people do so. If the same led burns out, it'd be best to replace the strip anyway, so the need for a removable adhesive isn't necessary. At least that's my opinion. Be sure to only use superglue in the 3 dark spots made for adhesive, and not on the led itself. Btw, ShopJimmy sells the unit to heat the strip for led removal, in case you didn't know.

DONT DO IT Takes 3 hrs of tedious concentration, so many steps that you can make mistake then when all done and said the frame did not align and our screen cracked but before that the scanning strips would not align and go back in and properly show full image. We spent 167.00 on bulbs, tools and all the stuff and as a highly experienced mr fixer just go buy another tv. Now we have a LG 50 w new bulbs and its worthless except we spent more to make sure its worthless.
