Fast classic cars and slow wanders through rows of vintage goods make Bowling Green, Kentucky our antiquing destination today! Across from the National Corvette Museum is "Vette City Antique Mall," a big emporium filled with things brought home long ago in those classic cars. What will we race to take home today?
This place is huge, with offerings from centuries past (including a whole space of antiquarian books) among the swung vases, Pyrex and 1970s kitsch prized by a lot of modern collectors! An old telephone switchboard, 1890s Stevengraph bookmarks, mirrored 1980s furniture and a handsome antique Victrola share space with everything from fine Fenton specialties to flea market finds.
We get to dispel a few myths along the way ("Catherine Holm" did not design those bowls!), talk about what's appropriate to sell in an antique mall (notice that the non-vintage is all on deep discount?) and pick up some 1950s cocktail shakers in time for New Year's as we take our spin through this fun antique emporium! We'd love to drive it all home in one of those hot classic cars for sale across the road, but the '65 Pontiac GTO will just have to stay on our bucket list for the time being...

The cabinet at 17:36 is for matrices (mats for casting) on Intertype or Linotype typecasting machines, not for typesetting. So it's a matrix cabinet, not a printer's or type-setter's cabinet :) Cases (not drawers) for type are stored flat, and you'd pull out individual cases with minuscule letters and set them on the lower part of the cabinet, and the case with the capitals/majuscules on the upper--which is where "lower case" and "upper case" comes from! Cheers! Love your channel, George!

Oh, that is good to know! It's a different method of type machine then. I hadn't encountered such a thing. Fascinating about Upper and Lower case, I never considered that! Thank you for broadening my understanding. (By the way, I may have said the same inaccurate thing in another video I already processed, so I'll try to pin a comment to correct that)

My husband and I visited the Corvette Museum last spring. Even though we are a Ford family it was still quite enthralling. It’s like a walk through our country’s history but focused on car manufacturing. We loved being able to witness a couple drive their custom made Corvette off the lobby floor. The story of the sinkhole opening up under the museum a few years ago and swallowing millions of dollars worth of Corvettes and the recovery process was interesting and disconcerting at the same time. I totally recommend a visit to the museum.

Making things look older than they are isn't a new concept. There have always been people willing to bury pottery and glass in the ground to give it age and patina. Some of it can be really hard to tell the difference. I think we have all gotten hit at least once or twice with something that turned out to be new or darn close to it.

Wish I knew who made that duck planter, but ceramics aren't my bag. Cool though. What will be collectible in the future? Things that are meant to be used and used up, but somehow survived. Things from chain stores that were iconic in their day but went out of business. I'd say McDonald's toys, but they made too many. CDs may well be. They speak to their era, and if you can find low number items by bands that got big later you may have something. It's already happening to cassette tapes, at least some of them.

Good evening, George! I hope you had a good Christmas! We did. The decorations had to come down the 26th, though. They went up the second week of December, and we can only handle so much gaudy and glittery for so long 😂 Hmmm...I spotted a blue and white wash basin and pitcher, at the start. That was interesting. Was it Flow Blue? I liked the clock on the table next to the Victorian dresser. I liked the Victorian match holder piece, with the hunter on it. I used to have a set of the Beam birds, but sold it when I moved here. Those were the only Beam bottles that ever interested me. I'd like to have a Ski Country Ivory-billed woodpecker decanter, though. Those antiquarian books really had my interest. Mom still has the set of Pyrex primary mixing bowls she bought new. They are used quite a bit, too. Loved the old cast iron pot with the spout and the bell, in the "old farm junk" space. I've seen old tractor hood pieces like that used as the sides on a coffee table. It would definitely take a certain decor to use it, though. There were some interesting items there. Thanks for the take-along!
@TheAntiqueNomad

I took my tree down on Boxing Day as well! I like outdoor lights the best, those could stay up all winter as far as I'm concerned. I didn't think the set was flow blue, I should've taken a moment with it but was a little disoriented at first, it's a large space that goes in all directions when you step inside. I like a few Beam bottles, I have the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair Space Needle edition still! I've seen the birds in some displays where I thought they looked sharp. The antiquarian books were really amazing, so nice to see such a variety in one place! I liked the farm junk in general, the cast iron pots do attract me...I'm about to come into a bell, so I held off. I never thought of using the tractor pieces as "fenders" on furniture, I bet that was fun! Glad you enjoyed it and happy new year to come
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS
@CONSTELLATION_PEGASUS 5 ай бұрын
@@TheAntiqueNomad The set might not have been Flow Blue. I only got a glimpse of it, but the blue and white caught my eye. I could tell that space was huge. It looked like the type of antique mall where you really had to pay attention where you had and hadn't been, to not miss anything. I'd really like a full-size Ski Country decanter of the Ivory-billed woodpecker, but those tend to be a bit difficult to come across. At one time, the Beam decanters did command a premium price. I can remember my uncle, who was an antiques dealer in Virginia, having a huge number of them, and there were collectors that were paying serious money for them...that was in the 1970s, though. They are made of really good china. Oh, those antiquarian books would've likely been my main area of focus there. Certain titles/topics, in books from those eras, often provide information that "isn't allowed" today. It was some time ago that I saw the old tractor hood parts, (and other pieces), made into furniture. Some of the old hoods, that were one-piece, were actually made into bars. In the open end of some of them, they had installed shelves for bottles and such, and the grill end was left intact. That look, for a bar, appealed more to me than the coffee table use. The barstools were...naturally 😉...made from old tractor seats.

Honestly, I don't think anything from today will become future antiques/collectables. For two reasons. 1) Things are so mass produced that nothing is rare or scarce and people are projecting and trying to hold on to the things they think are going to be valuable. And 2) Things are made like crap and just don't last. The only things that will be collectable are art, studio pottery and glass and other handmade objects. Otherwise, I wouldn't hold on to anything that is contemporary. An interesting subject to discuss.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad 5 ай бұрын
I appreciate your thoughts! I suspect a few things we aren't imagining will become future collectibles, but I agree that things are so mass-produced and sent all over the world now that the idea that things will be scarce or regional is hard to imagine. Too many people are holding on to endless plastic toys in packages for them to hold up in the long-run I feel! I agree with you about artisan items and things handmade regionally.
@persiphonehellecat
@persiphonehellecat 5 ай бұрын
I always use the example of baseball cards. My parents were huge baseball card collectors. Had over a million cards here. Old cards are worth money - because they are scarce. We played with them. We traded them, flipped them. I remember hooking Mickey Mantle cards to the spokes of my bike with a clothes pin. They were shredded to pieces in a day. Once, a friend of my brothers offered to marry me if I got my brothers' cards and gave them to him! I think I might have been 10. He was younger - which is why I said no. Wasn't interested in younger men - at the time. But in the 70s, people started collecting cards. They stopped putting gum in them because it left a white film on them. People began hoarding them. Condition - which we never considered before - suddenly became everything. Collectors suddenly started looking for crisp corners and perfectly centered cards. Now people pay tons of money to have them graded and sealed - and it is extremely difficult if not impossible to come up with a 10 rated card - even if you slide it out of the pack and into a protector. Kids stopped playing with them because they were no longer a dime a pack. They became an adult's collectable. And now, unless they are graded superstars, most cards from the 70s and beyond are worth nothing. There are even forgeries. And unscrupulous people have learned how to open wax packs, pull out the good stuff, reseal them and sell them as unopened packs online. I gave them all to my great nephew. I told him if he finds an Upper Deck Derek Jeter rookie card, he owes me half of the money it's worth. I only own two cards. One is the infamous Billy Martin card with the obscene gesture - I loved Billy Martin. The other is the Topps Yankee card where the designer stuck George Bush in the crowd. Worth nothing because EVERYBODY saved that one. So many people have things they think are worth a bundle. New Waterford is not made by the original Waterford company. And Waterford Marquis is made in Eastern Europe and most of it isn't even crystal. Yet I see these shopping videos where people find a piece of Waterford on the shelves at Goodwill and suddenly it's worth a fortune. Same with the Jim Beam bottles. They were marketed as collectables. I have come to the conclusion that anything marketed as a collectable - is not. @@TheAntiqueNomad

I agree for the most part, although people are now collecting things from 20 years ago for nominal amounts of money, things we would scoff at. 90s clothing and such. So while it’s hard to pick something mass produced to say it’ll probably be collected later, I think we can bank on quality being future collectibles-like minor designers and costume jewelry producers who still use prong sets and multiple platings. Joan Rivers, Chicos, etc.
@persiphonehellecat
@persiphonehellecat 5 ай бұрын
Yes the prices for some of that costume jewelry really shocks me. It is very well made, and that is what is going to make it hold its value. But - there is a LOT of it out there - maybe not on the market right now, but certainly in people's collections somewhere. Joan Rivers sold a TON of jewelry on QVC. So while it's pretty and fun. it will never be scarce. I buy a lot of vintage clothing, but I don't think of it as a collection - it's just what I wear. Toys seem to be kind of an exception to the rule. Mass produced action figures are going for insane prices right now. I especially look for bags with the little accessories in them. Some guy who is missing the sword for his He Man figure is willing to pay big bucks for it. Thank Bog for the "completist" out there! They keep us in business. The thing is - it is impossible to know which artist is going to be worth money in the future without a crystal ball. Back in the late 70s, I probably passed Basquiet selling his postcards on the streets of the East Village dozens of times. Never thought to stop and buy one. So many were tossed away. Today, he is long gone - a member of the 27 Club - and his canvases sell for 9 figures. Those little postcards are worth several hundred. I adore his work. If only I had stopped. I have begun dabbling in buying and selling art, and I am learning a lot. @@nemophilistnay
