It's more Star Trak discussion! This time, Mike and Rich talk about the current state of Star Trek: Discovery going into season 2, as well as the worthless short films that have been released to keep everyone...interseted? Excited?

You know one of the things I loved about the older Star Trek shows and movies? It was the slow ship battles. I’m talking stuff like in wrath of khan, which is probably the best example of it. Treated the Star Trek ships like 19th century sailing vessel’s that had to carefully maneuver and aim shots. I loved that. If I want to see ships zooming around like in Star Wars, I will watch Star Wars.

@GeorgeMonet
@GeorgeMonet 4 жыл бұрын
I hated that in Wrath of Khan. It made no fucking sense. The ships should be so advanced that they can accurately hit each other from across the galaxy as the computer should be in charge of targeting based on predictions of how the enemy ship is going to move. And ships should be constantly jumping into and out of warp to avoid fire. They should also be making more use of the teleporter which would render torpedoes and canons worthless since those could just be sucked up in a teleporter and then turned into energy and fed into the power grid. Since they wouldn't be worried about the safety of the torpedoe or canon fire they are teleporting then they could lock on super fast.
@dodojesus4529

@hohhoch3617

@@GeorgeMonet Being that it's space, the reality is that these ships ARE engaging each other at long distances. Star Trek itself has mentioned many times how teleporters struggle to lock on to fast moving objects. It still takes time for a ship to make the jump into warp. Time and energy - which takes away from critical systems needed in a fight. Warping away from a fight is done before the fight begins, or as a last resort.
@daver12591
@daver12591 3 жыл бұрын
@@GeorgeMonet Dude it's Star Trek, you're overthinking it. The space battles were meant to resemble naval battles, just like the ships are run like naval ships. This stuff is part of Star Trek's DNA. Besides that, I'll take a dramatic drawn out battle over just a bunch of shit flying all over the screen any day.

This comment was from a year ago and it’s only gotten more relevant. Now the Doctor’s not even a Time Lord anymore and has had a dozen previously unknown regenerations before Hartnell, Gallifrey was blown up again in the most anticlimactic way possible, and the season literally ended with Thirteen looking at the screen and saying “eh, this doesn’t actually change anything, don’t worry about it” before getting kidnapped by a cliffhanger. It’s a shitty knock-off of the Cartmel master plan that ignores and/or straight up retcons all of the stuff that made the Doctor an interesting character to begin with. Star Trek has Picard, which is a ten episode saga of Picard getting berated and called an old man while a bunch of minor characters from previous Trek shows are brutally murdered to prop up the new cast of OCs that aren’t given enough screen time to let us get to know them. Oh and there’s a prophecy of an apocalyptic future caused by robots that an all-female Romulan death cult is trying to prevent, this is treated like a bad thing even though almost every non-Data android shown in Picard are gigantic assholes to everyone. Picard also has a Romulan ninja bodyguard because Alex Kurtzman likes ninjas. And Star Wars is just a gigantic dumpster fire that Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams keep dumping gasoline on because they hope at some point it’ll just magically start being good if they keep telling everyone it’s the best Star Wars content ever made. Oh and none of the original six movies actually matter now because all Anakin and Luke accomplished was slightly delaying Palpatine’s plan for a few decades so the *real* Chosen One, Rey, can come and kamehameha him into hell instantly because the Force is now entirely based on belief in your own goodness and not intense training or natural ability. It’s fantastic, between about half a dozen people, they’ve managed to completely destroy the three greatest science fiction franchises ever, permanent staples of pop culture, by essentially taking a giant shit on them and then saying their self-insert fanfic characters were actually always the real heroes of the story. The original creators just weren’t powerful enough to see that yet.

I'm surprised they didn't talk about the fact that CBS is being sued over ST:D. For plagiarism. There is an indie video game developer who created a point-and-click adventure game called "Tardigrades" that was greenlit on Steam, quite a bit before the release of ST:D. It is a game about a spaceship and a blonde scientist who communicates with giant blue space bugs to teleport across the galaxy. And ST:D has pulled, from out of nowhere, something about a blonde scientist communicating with... giant blue space bugs... to teleport across the galaxy... (as if they didn't already have wormholes in Star Trek) So far CBS has tried scapegoating a former employer (VERY bad idea which they are now pretending they didn't do, since that meant admitting that plagiarism happened), threatening to countersue, moving for immediate dismissal because , and now... now the case looks to be heading to trial. The judge has said that unless CBS can provide genuine evidence that they didn't plagiarize (as opposed to falsely accusing the plaintiff of claiming to have copyrighted the actual RL species known as tardigrades), this case is proceeding. Also, their attempts to bash the plaintiff fall flat, given that the plaintiff is an Egyptian medical researcher who spends most of his free time caring for his invalid parents and works on video games when he's not at work and his father doesn't need his bedpan changed. The guy checks out pretty much every box on the "sympathy bingo" checklist.

They're distorting an existing franchise to appeal to a wider audience and make more dollar. Star Trek has been reduced to the cast running through corridors while ships explode and villains cackle, the stories of Tolkien have been altered to include somersaulting dwarves and skateboarding elves all the while the reanimated corpse of Star Wars stumbles in whatever current direction the winds of social media are blowing. Your interest and passion for things past have been noted and assigned a dollar value. Now all thats left is to grow the market.

@@SuperKing604 Why does that matter? I would rather see a niche LOTR that is more intelligently written and truer to the writing than something that is made to cater to the idiot populace. So what you get is writers who clearly didn't understand the material. I will give you some examples. Frodo and Gandalf leave the shire 9 months apart. In the movie they leave together, and when Frodo arrives at Bree, he asks for Gandalf who was heading to Isengard, so unless Gandalf can teleport around the world, why was he asking for him in Bree which is in distance terms relatively close to Hobbiton. Because the so called writers and experts for the story were clueless. How about the transition from Aragon being seen as an threat, to becoming a trusted friend, go watch the movie and see how brilliantly they handled that piece of writing, the transition went from them almost fighting him to cut scene and he is watching over them sleeping! How about the fact that apparently Saruman was responsible for forcing the party into Moria knowing there was a Balrog there (I am sure he wanted the ring to fall into the hands of a Balrog!). Or even better, why is it that during the discussions of entering Moria, with Gandalf and Aragorn, Gimli in a completely opposing position is telling them they will be greeted by a roaring fire and feast? At no point does Gandalf or Aragorn tell him, or he question them on why they were worried about entering Moria? How about the fact that the Orcs of Moria can scale up sheer walls like spiders? it makes holding up in a place like Helm's deep completely useless and the need for a bomb to blow a whole in the wall also pointless Instead of spending time on the building of Aragorn and Frodo's friendship in Bree, or Legolas and Gimli's friendship growing, it is more important to spend time 12 minutes of showing Legolas defy the lore's of gravity fighting a Troll. I could spend hours more writing about how bad they did the storyline, but it's unlikely well ever get a reboot made with enough balls to not dumb it down to the public

Rich is more right than he knows regarding the creator's hating Star Trek. For anyone interested, Midnight's Edge (another youtube channel) does some great videos looking into the state of Trek, and there's probably two big things that will keep things from ever going back to old Trek stylings. A) The executive in charge (I forget the name, but can look it up if anyone actually reads this and is interested) does actively dislike Star Trek. He's been quoted on it, I believe, and he's been in charge of setting the course and finances for things since the early cancellation of Enterprise. B) After multiple company divisions, the rights for creating Star Trek have been split between Paramount/Bad Robot, and CBS, and very messily. Essentially, CBS is only allowed to make TV episodes, but has to do it in such a transformative way that it can in no way be referred to as a copy/ripoff of old Trek, from the visuals to the very themes and tone. So even if there was a will, there's less legal way.

Star Wars is WW2 in space. Star Trek is Hornblower in space. Everything stems from this; differences in style, in fanbase. It's also why both Star Wars and Star Trek have been destroyed by modern iterations - both franchises have forgotten these roots. The old Star Wars movies were war films, with some fantasy adventure stuff thrown in. The old Star Trek shows were idealistic nautical adventures. The new stuff, in both cases, is just... action. The historical element - the nostalgia that drew us to these franchises in the first place - is gone completely, because the modern Star Trek and Star Wars writers and directors never actually knew what the franchises were about, and carried across only the most superficial elements.
@NicholasBrakespear

@@dragonknightleader1 Oh totally, that's what I'm always saying to people. The tone was right. If you stripped the sci-fi elements of Rogue One, you'd basically have The Guns of Navarone. And the frustrating thing is... there was so much potential, if they'd kept this historical element. The new trilogy didn't need to actually be war movies; given that RoTJ ended with the destruction of a super weapon and the collapse of the Empire... the new trilogy could have been post-war spy thrillers; there could have been a sci-fi Cold War, with everyone trying to build their own super weapons and become the new big power - imagine a Star Wars version of... The Ipcress File, or Tinker Tailor, or hell, they could have even made some "James Bond in Star Wars" type franchise with a new spy protagonist traveling from one exotic planet to another. But no. They managed to simultaneously copy all the plot elements from A New Hope, while failing to actually implement them in a way that captured the war movie feel.

Please keep going. I just want Mike and Rich to keep talking about Star Trek in any context. Even if its just how terrible Discovery is. "Mike and Rich talk about Star Trek" is the best thing to happen to Star Trek fans in a very long time, and we are a long-suffering people!

In regard to the shooting star thing, I'm tempted to point this out to the writers and I expect one of two things to happen: 1. They respond by saying, "Neeerrrrd!" 2. They make me the head writer and ask, "Can you teach us how to brain?" I'll let you guys know in a few weeks if I just picked up a seven figure salary.
