The riptide R1 and DIYeboard run the same power train. the difference is the R1 runs a 6s 21.6v battery. Im guessing the DIYeboard you've built is mated to a 10s 36v battery. The cool thing is that Riptide's ESC can be "reprogrammed" to work with a 10s 36v battery simply by desoldering 1 connection... which I did and threw in a 10s2p battery and BOOM. My riptide now has torque all the way up into the 20mph range. Voltage sag is not a thing and hills not a problem anymore and range is significantly improved at around 12 - 14mi (130lb rider). Definitely stronger than my Ownboard W2 board now.

This video looks like it’s 7 months old.because l just bought a R1 Riptide on Black Friday for $399.00 and it came with 2 extra belts and a full set of bearings as well.so I couldn’t pass up this promo deal last week.its a cool board and the turning radius is unbelievable,l do own a V2dual+ Boosted Board with 2 extended range batteries so l can go on 25 mile trips if l want and l do a lot of those but I wanted a short eboard so that price hooked me in and l am stoked on the R1.

Nice video, I enjoyed the analytical approach and fact based assessment vs. other aboard reviews on youtube with more flash and editing, but ultimately largely opinion driven. I've been looking for over a year and now considering a DIY kit as it would seem I dont need the technical/electrical proficiency to put it together as I originally thought. New subscriber and looking forward a boosted mini review. What's the weight of the DIY board fully assembled? Cheers

Ya, they are cheep LG cells. But i think you can get the kit without the LG cells and buy cells from a battery site like imr, or you can get pre made battery packs from ownboard or meepo or wowgo. The sanyo cells are nice, so are the samsung 30Q cells.

@skatemetric627
@skatemetric627 6 жыл бұрын
Thinktank No, it's the exact same ESC too (configured for a 6S battery), and it's imprecise and laggy. Check out the kit in the video or the WowGo (or Ownboard) shortboard. Either would be a much better alternative. Also check out our shortboard video. For the price of the riptide you could easily put together something very similar.

Now that the Meepo 2.0 is out and has an ultra fast acceleration mode, as well as a 25+or- speed. And considering the parts are all available individually as well as it being easy to deck swap or get the Sanyo Tesla batteries. I think,. Meepo may win now.. who would have thought?! Like, wow. But ya riptide sucks, and they have shady "commercials"...

Here's the thing: The guys at Riptide are actually coming from the culture side of skateboarding. Most of the competition isn't as you mention earlier in vid. I think that says a lot about the market share that Riptide is after. The DIY thing is interesting, but it isn't a brand like the others. Therefore, I feel that is an unfair comparison. I could probably source and find even cheaper, faster, better etc. parts to undercut the $400 price point on that. A good 50 dollar complete sans E motor is still a great way to get around. That is where I come from. I respect your position on all of these products.
@skatemetric627
@skatemetric627 6 жыл бұрын
We certainly wouldn't have included the DIY board if it were a full-blown DIY build, but it's actually a complete kit by DIYEboard that can be assembled in 30 minutes or less (like the popular WowGo and Meepo kits). You're undoubtedly correct that many riders would still prefer a ready-to-run solution, but because the kit comes 90% assembled, we felt it was fair to include it. And we appreciate Riptide's angle, but the R1's performance is markedly worse than nearly every other board at its price point. As we said, it's a nice board to ride, but if you can spare 30 minutes to bolt the kit together, you can have the best of both the R1 and the Meepo at a great price.

That's a lot of excuses for pathetic performance. It's like saying that Ferrari should start making shoddy cars because they come from a race background, so it's okay for the performance to suck due to knowing what their F1 cars can do.
@travisnewhouse1665
@travisnewhouse1665 6 жыл бұрын
And your excuse is that you compared Riptide to an Italian sports car. Congratulations! I guess that is more of a complement. I didn't know e-boards were supposed to be fucking race cars? Riptide is doing what none of the other boards are doing. They have more credibility than any of the other brands! Maybe if you spent more time at the skatepark and or actually used one (before they put motors on it,) to get around you'd have some idea. If it was truly a terrible product...NO ONE WOULD BUY IT! Also, not bad for a first board. They deliver on specs and have pretty good customer service.
@travisnewhouse1665
@travisnewhouse1665 6 жыл бұрын
Is the DIY free if it takes me longer than 30 minutes? I'd take that up with the Riptide guys if you are really committed to advocating for the consumer. I'd like to see other testing done before you slam a company. After all you are on here to make money from ads? Be more objective!

Travis Newhouse it’s a comparison! Chill out. What are the owner of the company or did you buy one and realize that it wasn’t that good and are salty. And the Ferrari thing was a comparison if you want you could say that oh boosted board is from a longboard electric background so it doesn’t matter if there small non electric board is bad. That’s what your saying. So chill out and think about that comparison.

A good board needs vesc esc and at 63mm motors and a battery at least 10s3p so 30+ cells. 25r are cheap but 30q cells are worth it.
@skatemetric627
@skatemetric627 6 жыл бұрын
This comparison doesn't include a full-blown DIY build, because most riders don't have the tools, time, or knowledge for that type of project. And 50mm motors geared with a high reduction ratio can efficiently deliver plenty of power for a 30" board, without adding unnecessary weight or reducing ground clearance. We love VESCs, but they're not particularly cost effective here, nor are 30Q cells.
