I used to like Grados. Until one of the small pieces that stops you extending the headphones too far came off my SR125s and got lost in the ether. I emailed asking them if I could buy a replacement part , they refused. Instead they wanted me to send my headphones from the UK to the US (insured - a reasonable cost), pay for a repair and then pay for shipping to return them for me. After that I decided to not buy from them again. Companies like Beyer Dynamics will happily sell you replacement parts and I think that's important for expensive headphones.

I've had 2 grado headphones that I had used for years, pretty similar to these They sound great, they were comfortable, but had 2 glaring issues. One was the hair - it ending up stuck in the drivers and go through the membrane, causing annoying buzzing (sometimes fixed by blowing/sucking air on the back side but not always and it's oh so frustrating) The second is that the cables below the caps eventually twist and turn enough to get damaged. Both my pairs ended damaged this way and I really tried to be careful. My "noise leakage" experience was different as well, mine did leak a lot of sound, in and out - but had amazing soundstage I guess thanks to that If you're thinking of buying Grado first time don't buy these, and look into the problems they have. --- "Must be either Singapore, South Africa or Finland." @@iLoveTheseRemoras I for one (especially as Finn) am not really sure where you did pick the info that hemp would be illegal in Finland ( in fact, to quote from a website: "Unlike many other countries, Finland never passed a specific law banning hemp production. This meant that cultivation never fully disappeared, especially in rural areas. The 1990s saw a revival in the industry, and since then, hemp has become a vital part of the country’s economy again" ( to be fair, I for one am not fully certain why between 1950-1990 the hemp production went almost into zero in Finland; probably was because how "hip"-trend importing "everything" in general was during those years. EDIT: A summary after further research: World War 2 -> decline in fibre-plants in general -> both hemp and flax eventually got replaced by cotton-imports. I highly recommend to look for article called "History of Hemp in Finland" originally written by Erkki Laitinen )). A clarification: It is true that both "hemp" and "marijuana" are are both cannabis-plants. The main difference comes in the concentration of "tetrahydrocannabinol" (THC), which usually is less than 1% in hemp, while on selective-breeding this is often over 20% in marijuana-cultivation. In fact, the overwhelming amount of (normal) cannabidiol subdues the effect of THC, thus also making the "easy of pain" and other "stereotypical cannabis" / narcotic-effects pretty much non-existent in hemp. --- So yeah, in Finland you can find hemp production in pretty much all forms; from-to and everything between oils to cat-litter-pellets, to name couple of examples. Sure, we necessarily at the moment do not have a "power-production" in hemp-fibre-production that we would be making all the ropes needed for example. But we're getting back on this since hemp-business a little by little. ---

I have a pair of SR80 and while they sound great, it is super annoying to deal with the free spinning "feature" they will inevitably get twisted to hell and one side of my pair broke the connection. I mean hemp is a good replacement for wood and paper in theory. For about 30 years it's been considered as a solution to cutting back on deforestation as hemp grows 20 times faster than trees and can be used for basically the same functions. It just not as durable for things that need tensile strength like building structures and buildings. It's just it requires a large change in how people view hemp for it to really be attainable. In theory it would be cheaper to do in the long run and less wasteful but again, people would need to be more accepting of hemp otherwise it's just going to lead to schools complaining about kids taking paper and burning it to get high.

Their SR80's are really good headphones though and are well respected in the audio community, and you can get them all day for around 100 bucks. These special editions are just for the meme.

Trade secret: there are no audiophiles into cannobis culture with "money in their pockets." The overhead on those first two endeavors is... Wait for it... ... ...Too high.

I'm literally an audiophile who grows and consumes weed. Oh, also I'm a Mechanical Engineer for Ford, Tesla, and SpaceX. I have a few thousand in headphones and I'm literally looking at these. I have multiple Grados including DIY ones with Nhoord Red drivers. Yeah, I get these might be somewhat gimmicky, but as he said, I have money to burn.

"With the SR-80s, they were totally put on the map." SMDH. That lack of appreciation for history is just gobsmacking.
@peterj19794 жыл бұрын
Gobsmacking? Get real. This isn't an audiophile-specific channel, and there's no reason for them to be super knowledgeable in the histories of every niche category of tech.

Except they litteraly don't. The only grados to deviate from their house sound. If thats what the video is saying then its a bad video

Had the SR80s, sound wise they were amazing, but not many people talked about the poor design. The metal poles are slide up/down too freely, the clamping force is weird, and makes it hard to listen for extended periods. And worst of all, as James (somewhat) mentions at 2:40 the unlimited twist and the soft cable means you actually ruin the (non replaceable) cable just by day to day use and it getting twisted past the point of no return. This brand knows sound, but they need to actually change things up if they want to sell more.

Great video thanks.....they lost me at $420USD for a set of headphones that look very flimsy. Edited: I may have been a bit harsh in my comment. I like them and they probably sound great but to me they are over what I am willing to pay for a set of headphones. They do look a bit flimsy though in construction and any of the options you can add to them are also very costly. I am sure there are those that would snap these up and roll with them and enjoy them very much.

You're not wrong though. You can get a lot better built headphones for $420. Sure, they might sound incredible, but if you prioritize build quality and durability they might not be a great choice.

Yeah. After buying my cowin e7 for 60 bucks. I can't imagine paying hundreds of dollars for a headset. Maybe I don't get it, but my cowin e7 is is amazing and I love it. Its all the sound I need.

i love how half the people watching this video don’t know who Grado are or what their headphones are about. Grado’s Headphones aren’t your basic quirky brand headphones, they’re not AirPods or Beats, they’re audiophile headphones. They don’t have in-line controls because they don’t need in-line controls. The $420 price tag on these is obviously a joke, but these headphones are genuinely fantastic. They’ve been getting manufactured for decades, and have probably the most detail and greatest sound in a conventional headphone. they’re open-back headphones, which means they let all the noise in and a lot of the noise out, meaning people outside can clearly hear your music (you can legitimately shine a light through them). this isn’t a downside, this is by design. open-back headphones have better “soundstage”, which is basically how wide and 3D the sound feels. Grado headphones are absolutely incredible if you want some headphones to use at home. they’re so great for movies and music, you can literally hear the sounds of the gravel the characters are walking on transition to dirt and back, in detail like no other headphones at its price. the hemps are obviously just novelty headphones. anyways thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Grados are for people that are primarily interested in the mid and high-pitched audio range. Generally older people that have loss of hearing in higher frequencies enjoy them most because of the exaggerated highs.

They're one of the best known and respected makers of high-end headphones and phono cartridges, for 65 years. Often called the best available at any price. They are not advertised or sold in mass market outlets....they are famous, desirable among professionals musicians, engineers, wealthy audio lovers, and regular folks who hear that they are so far superior to "mass-market" brands that once you go Grado, you never go....back. So THAT's what music sounds like.....
@jubuttib4 жыл бұрын
Grado headphones, pretty much across the range, tend to have a significant emphasis on the trebles (James wincing at the high harmonica part makes me believe these aren't really different). Not a super high, but clearly boosted. Personally couldn't get along with them at all (tested at least the SR60, SR80 and SR125 that I can remember for certain), and wanted something a bit more neutral on the top end. This is not to say that they're bad headphones by any stretch, just that they have a distinct characteristic sound, which might not suit everyone.
