The joining area where the rear pin and receiver meet is WAY too thin. Mine cracked and I had to send it back. I was making sure I was following the gas settings too. Good thing is DTs customer service was always pleasant.

I don't think it's that they're NOT working on improving the Aug, I think they're just very limited as to what they can actually improve without significantly revamping the design and breaking parts compatibility (at that point you may as well just make a new gun).

The only improved aug that exists is the f88 made by Thales in Australia, and they made sure that it’s not available to plebs like us. Safe to say Steyr isn’t interested in upgrading the AUG, any of the popular aftermarket modifications can be done without redesign and still no factory improvements

Steyr just doesn't bring the cool AUG stuff to the US market, that's the problem. Whether it's demand or just not caring, they aren't focusing on the US market aside from selling the rifle. They've teased 300BO and an upgraded side rail for years and it never materializes. They could bring back the 9mm kits too, they just don't. They make the AUG in the US now, and some of their US guys seem on board with catering to the US market, but it just never happens. I still love my AUG though, despite it being an older design

@@JohnBrowningsGhost The only "improved" AUG coming from any factory is the EF88 (also known as the F90) by Lithgow - a rifle made for the Australian military, not for the US civilian market. However, the F90 is largely not parts-compatible with a standard AUG because it has made several large revisions to the design - which is exactly what OP was talking about.

These are significant problems that other products do not have. I’d take an AUG, X95, SAR, or even a Keltec over the MDRX for reliability’s sake. When the MDRX works, it is soft shooting and accurate. However, parts breakages and functional inconsistencies make it unviable as a defensive rifle.

Desert Tech should split the MDR family into large and small frame. A combat reliable 5.56 (and .300blk) size bullpup. No fancy ejection, no .308 size and weight, no magazine inserts. Just a lightweight, compact, reliable bullpup with a precision trigger. The gun the AUG and Tavor and L85 always wanted to be. 16" and 12" (and 8" 300blk) options. No barrel touching picatinny slot that burns up your hand. A little less modularity. Just reliable, compact and lightweight. Oh, and maybe an improved trigger pack. Maybe even work with Triggertech or Hiperfire. We would absolutely pay for even better triggers. And then the big boy rifle for .308, 6.5creed and nowadays 8.6blackout.

I still second the rail bit. No one's mounting a tiny pistol dot to their 20" 6.5 Creedmoor barrel, it was kind of a dumb idea to begin with, also shows a lack of faith in the weapon retaining zero when removing and reinstalling a barrel.

Better stock trigger, more reliable and a straight forward design that doesn't make concessions like the MDR does just to let people slap a 5.56 barrel in it, and still wind up being just as heavy as the stock .308 configuration. It also doesn't help that the MDR is known to have a lot of flex in the frame using 6.5 CM or .308, inducing horizontal fliers fairly consistently. DT still has MDR and MDRx owners that have rifles that've gone back several times (a few guys I've spoken to have correspondence with DT CS that has been going on for a year, and up to 7 trips back to DT for rifles that refuse to work cause their QC is dogshit. There should me minimal issues at most for a 2,500$ rifle, these aren't Kel-Tecs where that shit can be explained.

Memories a bit fuzzy, but its either that the stanag mag body doesnt have a last round hold open or it doesnt have a bolt release like the original magazine body, eother way the gun needs to have the charging handle operated when it runs empty with stanag magazines. Also ive been told running it suppressed it weird, like the replacement pistol it needs to not be overgassed has what is basically port pop but from the front. A few years ago id have said trigger, but there's a replacement metal sear available which improves it so its probably the only 'issue' with the AUG i dont actually care about.

I like that thing a lot. I'm moving back to Washington state. Hopefully it doesn't just turn into Northern California or Western New York and I will be able to purchase whatever guns I want as is my right. I am hoping that at some point I can get a slick bullpup like this in the new high pressure 6.8 and in time hopefully other high pressure loads will come available. A 6mm or a .25 caliber would be really interesting. I can't wait till components are available to start reloading /hose new cases especially if pressure is opened up to 100kpsi. I wonder if we are now hitting a time with 3D printing where we can start printing sabots. Imagine small high pressure guns like this with smooth bore 9mm or .40 caliber barrels. For close range the could shoot full bore fin rounds and for long range something like 6mm in a sabot. Some of the printers can handle metals and it should be possible to run tungsten carbide fin stabilized cores possibly with expanding copper jackets for serious armor piercing ultra high bc controlled expansion all in a single projectile with the possibility of velocity over 5000fps. I'm seeing interest in new designs of firearms but with all the technology that is becoming common I don't get why there is so little interest in actually updating cartridges. If anyone is interested in this sort of thing and could offer any advice or would like to collaborate in some way let me know. I check my replies every so often and hope to start designing a system that will offer some major gains in performance.

Me? I'm an AUG owner since the late '80s. The MDRX has had a L O N G gestation period and looks to be still changing. Doubtful it will ever have any big military contracts. Kudos to Desert Tech for sticking with it. I'd prefer it to a TAVOR B/C the TAVOR puts gas back into th shooters face!! Very toxic.

Don't think so. Desert Tech hasn't budged from their statement that it's not happening, and the design of the gas block isn't the issue, the placement of it is. The gas block needs to be further back (closer to the chamber) to work right, and they say this would require a redesign of the upper receiver. I'm no engineer, but I don't see why they just don't make a low-profile gas block (like an AR low-profile) without the pic rail that can just fit under the receiver as it exists.

No, there are not. At least, not factory offered. I'm sure some random .22 wildcat based off a .308 case exists, but the smallest commercial chambering with a .308 parent case is .243 Winchester.

Search SRS rifle. There's the 22-250 Savage. Its not based on a 308 but it's a commercially available 22 cal short action cartridge using the same bolt face iirc pushing 4,000 fps.

I think the real improvement to focus on is QC and having the gun actually work. Might be complaining bias but I read/watch way more about the guns being sent back and still not working on return.

I've been waiting after each new iteration to see if they fixed the core functionally. So far, they've been failing at that. The pros are really good, but the biggest con is that it doesn't consistently go bang.

I'm sorry but I was totally distracted by the fact that Hop has the eyebrows of a husky. Like seriously. He has one eyebrow split in half for both sides! At first, I thought he had lost half an eyebrow in a fire or something, but no, they're symmetrical! Normally you have your eye pro on, and I never noticed it!
