I had a house fire, and had several thousand rounds of various caliber explode in the fire. I told the firemen before they went in the house, but they weren't concerned at all. Unconstrained shells exploding like this just dont concentrate the energy in one direction just as this video shows, and against their fire protection, there was no increased danger from the shells. I had never thought about it before - Good to see this video to see it firsthand and slowed down!

this is not the real truth. if the impact mechanism had not been fixed and the bullet jammed, the shell would have flown away from the shot because of the physical reaction and because it is lighter. (used google translator)

i think these trip alarms are more or less just to alert the occupants with the sound of a shotgun shell, and also to scare anyone trying to bust into your home. Hearing a shotgun shell go off next to your leg would be real scary. Great video

Interesting video. Maybe similar setup with high power rounds as the crimped bullet in the harder casing may produce different results. A gunshop had a fire sparked by someone grinding and I happened to drive past at the moment. Sounded like a massive gunfight. Five people died in the process. Can you imagine ammo going off in every direction. Allan

Its as loud as it would be in a shotgun. I did a test once of firing a de-powdered,de-pelleted, primered shell in a shotgun. I was shocked at how loud it was! A flame even protruded from the end of the barrel. You may have the neighbour’s calling the cops on you if you do a test in your backyard...assuming your backyard is in a residential area.

Interesting I’ve never seen a video of this done before. However for the case of a misfire randomly going off on the ground it would do even less damage, the shell in this test is being held firm, if there’s nothing holding it then the casing would go flying back, this dissipating the energy even more. Better to be safe though, if you get a misfire dispose of it safely

It is not just the length of the shotgun barrel that causes higher velocity for the shot column. The restriction caused by both the shotshell crimp and the shot wad obturating the barrel creates the pressure required to complete the burn sequence, allowing the powder to create pressures many magnitudes greater than that displayed in the video.

In my Arizona hunter safety class, about 38 years ago, the instructor did this in a paper bag while holding in his hands. Mind you this was when the world used evil and thick paper bags that most have never known. You could actually put 20lbs. of dog poop in one as long as it did not get wet. Everyone got down and not a pellet penetrated the bag.

Primers can create 40-60 Bar pressure inside the loaded shell. Smokeless powder requires substantially high pressure level to burn fast, but if there's nothing to keep the pressure (just soft thin plastic shell walls) then it wouldn't burn... That explains bunch of unburnt powder you see after the cartridge blows up.

Have seen home-made mole traps that use a similar set up but put the shell in a shortened piece of pipe. The pipe contains the shell and it works like a "very short" shotgun to kill the mole. They only use low brass shells in them though, to keep from blowing the whole thing up.

If you mount that in reverse (shell faces the tripline) about 6-8 inches off the ground it makes a great early warning system and cripples the intruder. But you have to use 00-Buck or Flachete Rounds. Nothing fancy, cheap and works well. And if you can retrieve the mechanism you can use it again. Keep in mind I am speaking about SHTF scenarios here. This is not for regular home defense when you are leaving to go get dominos or some s**t.

Hello, guys. I wonder what will change if the shell casing will be made from brass rather than plastic? Would it work like improvised barrel or rip a part same as this one did? Not that I want to use this thing in home defence tripwire. Just wondering. Plastic cases seems to be pretty safe in case of missfire outside of a gun, but what's up with metal ones?

Something to consider: If you can get it to discharge with electricity, NO Holder, the weight of the shot exceeds the hull and the hull will launch backwards rather quickly, and that MAY be more efficacious.

Loved the video. Question: You said a couple times that this perimeter tripwire device "doesn't work", and yet it seemed to work fine. Pull wire, it goes "bang!", right? Does the maker advertise it as a device for inflicting death or injury on an intruder? That would certainly leave them open to a fat lawsuit. Maybe it's just supposed to make a loud noise.

I built a perimeter alert using a Rat Trap that pops two 209 primers. Lots louder than being muffled inside a shell! But, these are well built and if you just use an empty shell with primer, it would be a great alert for intruders! 🇺🇸😎

Cool video. But if this was to really duplicate a misfire or hang fire of an ejected shell, shouldn't the shell NOT be constrained? Constraining the shell as shown in the video forces the shot and wad forward and only allowed to go side/side or up. Id like to see what really happens to an unconstrained shell (mimicking an ejected shell).

In California, a booby trap designed to do harm can definitely get you arrested, and open you up for a lawsuit by whomever gets injured by it, burglar or not. You can however have "trip" systems designed to sound alarm, noise makers and such. A primer strike only would probably be okay, but if someone gets injured, you'd better have a good lawyer and bail bondsman just in case.

I actually agree with the law on this one. Its one thing to see a threat in real time and take action with a firearm but its another to have a round on a tripwire that could be forgotten about or kill an innocent person such as a kid meandering around, first responder or utility guy.

I wouldn't recommend this - in otherwise do not try this at home! But when I was teenager, I had some buddies, that had more guts than brains, but they would put bullets, as well as shotgun shells balanced in the crook of a tree, then from a distance of about 50 feet would take aim with a bb or pellet gun, shooting the primer location, depending upon the size of the ammunition & the skill of the shooter, it might take a couple tries, but generally resulted in an explosion & all the kids scattered before the adults showed up to wonder what the heck was going on...
@starlight4697
@starlight4697 7 жыл бұрын
I used to shoot the primers all the time with the BB. I did 30 06 9 mm 7 mm rifle bullets 30 30 . It would just make it pop sound it wouldn't even allowed as a firecracker. Or wasn't enough pressure if you put it in between a tree branch for the bullet to leave the casion. If you stuck it in the ground. Then the bullet would leave the casing and the casing would shred a little bit. Any bullet or shell has to have something around it for it to project has to have backup pressure. Once you do that. Then it's going to come out and it could come out from either end. I know how to make it leave both ends. I can make it come out at either end I want it to you top or the bottom or the sides. Once you learn how to do that you can make landmines. I will not give you the information how to do that. World's already bad enough.

Darin- USMC B- 85-93 , i am 47. When i was young i would set them on rocks and shoot them with my lever action 30-30 bb gun. And i will tell ya, it really honed my skills shooting wise. Damn ,the fun we had growing up. People forget, but dad and grandpa used to buy dynamite and primer cord at the hatdware store. When i got responsible enough to hunt with a real rifle, i would take primer cord and wrap around a tree. Sit back about 300 yds and bang. Pretty cool watching a tree splinter up into a billion toothpicks. Then i had to cut the tree up and split it for firewood. Kifs these days dont know the fun we had.
