@@twistedyogert well considering what your load is self defense 00 buck you can generate around 1200-1400lb of force for comparison the best 9mm self defense load will hit around 390-400lb of force. a slug can reach 2200-2500lb force on your average non 3 inch 12g rifled slug. so unless your chest somehow can take the weight of 1-2k lbs in a concentrated area impacting you at 1200fps ish yea its gonna do alot damage. cave your chest in. its like saying you take 4 500lb men. have them stand on a single baseball bat stacked ontop of one another. than have the handle part of the baseball bat come down at you at around 1200 feet per second instantly.

As an Emergency Physician and having treated all sorts of GSW's, I can assure you without a doubt, a 12 gauge shotgun in close quarters is the most devastating round for home defense the average person can get their hands on period. As a matter of fact, the 12 gauge is the preferred weapon for bear protection for good reasons. It all comes down to energy the projectile delivers. A 55 grain 5.56 delivers about 1300ft-lbs at the muzzle. A 12 gauge Hornady Black buckshot which is what I use has a muzzle velocity of 1600 fps delivering about 2500ft-lbs at the muzzle. This far from the most powerful 12 gauge round, some of them deliver well over 3000ft-lbs. What the 5.56 is good at is longer range and being able to defeat body armor as well being lighter and carry more rounds. As for the body armor not being penned by the 12 gauge, don't let that fool you, you do not want to be on the receiving end of that massive deformity, it will break all sorts ribs, sternum and cause internal bleeding that can be quite fatal.
@brianfischer5609
@brianfischer5609 Жыл бұрын
Shotgun is definitely not preferred for bear protection. 12g doesn't offer enough penetration for thick skinned, musclebound animals. You want a large caliber rifle round, like 300winmag or something. And the biggest advantage of 556 is that it's light recoil, with decent power, so it excels at fighting multiple armed opponents because you can make fast follow up shots, and engage more targets at a faster rate.

@@brianfischer5609 False ""Experienced backcountry guides prefer a 12-gauge pump for bear defense. It's generally easier to accurately shoot a long gun than a handgun, which makes a pump-action shotgun like the Mossberg 500 an ideal choice for bear defense. The Mossberg 500 can also effectively serve double duty as a home defense weapon.Aug 9, 2023"" The 12 gauge shotgun is so effective that the government in Alaska issues it's employees 12 gauge shotguns in the field. Fact, the 12 gauge is the most popular bear defense gun in Alaska and the idea that a 12 gauge shotgun can't kill a bear is ludicrous! Here is another copy and paste job from hunting guides for Alaska. ""According to Nelson, the 12-gauge slug gun is by far one of the most popular choices for bear protection in the Alaskan bush. While it is extremely effective, the main reason it’s been so widely-used is because shotguns like the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are a fraction of the price of bolt-guns and, in turn, that’s what the government has provided to its employees. Based on ballistic testing and field use, Nelson recommends Brenneke’s Black Magic Magnum or DDupleks’ Monolit 32 solid steel slug. The Black Magic Magnum is a 602-grain slug that carries 3,000 ft.-lbs. of energy at 1500 fps, while the 495-grain DDupleks leaves the muzzle at 1410 fps with 2,180 ft.-lbs. of energy."" We need these 3 critical things for our physical vitality. Cardiovascular system Respiratory system Nervous system (spinal cord and brain being things that can shut a person down if destroyed) 00 buckshot tears through with 9 pellets in a concentrated area depending on barrel length and distance. This will definitely cause severe leaking in an attacker, and will probably hit multiple organs. This will make any rational person give up and wish they never tried to harm you. Rifles have velocity advantage, that can dump massive amounts of energy causing a shockwave that rapidly expands tissue. This can disturb multiple organs, and is said to be “rapidly incapacitating”. Rifles are more ergonomic and you can land more shots easily than a shotgun. But I don’t think rifles are good as shotguns in close range because shotguns disassemble an attacker in a gruesome manner. This really depends on the shooter and where they live, because both tools are very effective at what they do.

I have been a fanboy of the 12 guage since 1966 when, in Vietnam, I saw two V.C. dispatched at about 20 or so yards using a Model 97. They were walking down a trail and tripped a flare. The NCO with the shotgun was backing up a machine gun position and the 12 gauge fired twice before the M-60 gunner could loose one round. The hits literally blew the small statured enemy off their feet. Two quick 12 gauge shots neutralized the 60 or so rounds carried by the two enemy in their AK's. I made up my mind at that moment, that the twelve gauge with 00 buck is the load I would want in a defensive situation, when over penetration is not the issue. I did not have a chance to ask the NCO wielding the Model 97 if he pulled the trigger twice or if he had just kept it pulled and racked a new load into the gun. I have not had the opportunity to play with the Model 97 but, I understand that some of these weapons could be tweaked to fire as a new round was loaded, with the trigger held back. My shotgun for self defense is a model 870 Remington 12 GA with a Remington supplied short barrel. I had modified this gun with an aftermarket extending sock and pistol grip but, reverted it back to the standrd stock on the advice of a Sheriff's Deputy. Rationale is that the standard stock configuration doesn't look like a "Rambo Weapon" and it would probably play better if the shooting went to court. I did remove the spacer from the magazine. allowing me 4+1 round capacity and have an elastic shell holder on the stock with a few additional rounds. I have a flashlight mounted beneath the barrel which incorporates a red dot - zeroed in from about ten to twenty feet. I do not intend to shoot anyone at a greater distance because a longer distance might negate a self defense shooting (unless I was being shot at).

In regards to terminal performance we can look at the results of the Ellifritz Study. It should be noted that the rifle data includes various centerfire cartridges, while the shotgun data includes all shotgun calibers -- but 90% of the collected data was from 12-gauge. -- Handguns as a whole combined for a Fatality Rate of 28% on head & torso hits. Conversely, Rifles had a Fatality Rate of 68% and Shotguns 65%. -- Ellifritz also assessed Incapacitation Rate. These were instances where an assailant was struck with a single shot to the head or torso and stopped what they were doing immediately without being able to fire another shot, deliver another blow, or move more than five feet. In this category, Handguns scored 56%, Rifles 80%, and Shotguns 86%. -- The study also attempts to study the phenomena of "psychological stops" by assessing cases where assailants are incapacitated (same criteria as above) albeit with strikes anywhere else on the body -- such as the extremities -- not just the head and torso. In that regard, Handguns scored a 36%, while both long guns scored 58%. -- The average number of head/torso shots required for incapacitation for each weapon type is also included by Ellifritz. On average, Handguns require 1.87, Rifles 1.40, and Shotguns 1.22. I assume this is factoring in individual trigger-pulls, not projectile impacts -- so the shotgun results shouldn't be skewed by buckshot. -- One of the more interesting (or perhaps scary) tidbits of data from the Ellifritz Study is the "incapacitation failure rate". Basically, for this section he looked at instances in which assailants basically refused to be incapacitated regardless of the number of shots they were hit by and where they were striking on the body. You know all those stories about guys soaking up rounds and continuing to fight whether due to narcotics, mindset, or whatever else? Yeah, this section is for them. For Handguns, this happened ~20% of the time*. For Rifles, 9% and Shotguns 12%. *Note that the Handguns results are skewed somewhat on the low end by the presence of .25 ACP, .22LR, and .32 ACP. These rounds were found by the study to have a statistically notable higher incapacitation failure rate compared to every other cartridge in the study. If you just limited it to the primary service pistol cartridges, the results would probably be somewhere around ~15%, give or take.

@@jacobackley502 I agree in theory, but 90+% of the data gathered was for 12-gauge. Considering that Ellifritz had the presence of mind to exclude things like .22LR, .22WMR, etc. from the Rifle results even when they were fired from a long gun and since he took a large amount of his data from officer-involved shootings & military engagements, I would assume the majority of his results are likewise featuring projectiles like buckshot and slugs. I wouldn't rule out the presence of birdshot and/or .410, but without having spoken to Ellifritz personally I can't say for sure how well-represented they are and if they're more than a drop in the proverbial in the bucket.

Ellifritz mentioned that birdshot was included in the study, and said it performed horribly (can't remember the oss % tho), but didn't mention how often it was used in the study compared to buck or slugs, and he also said that 12 ga slugs had the highest one shot stop rate of 68%, on the active response training website.

An AR miss would penetrate multiple walls and might very well penetrate a residence with potential great harm to innocent bystanders. Multiple threats at greater distance? AR for sure because of distance and accuracy. Bedside gun is a 12 gauge w a light. I would personally rather get hit with a 556 than 00 buck.

My personal preference is to use the rifle if I need to defend from a slightly longer distance or if there are no other homes close by and I'm sure I won't hurt anyone else if it penetrates. I like the shotgun, possibly with a low power or just average load, for closer engagements or if there are homes next to me or nearby, and I have to guard against collateral damage from penetration. As I was always told, and firmly believe to this day, you need to pick the right tool for the job. They are BOTH excellent self-defense tools.

Pretty much instant cessation of the "fight" If you consider chasing about the South 40, then yer rifle might be a better choice. Assume the average home in US is 2000sf...equiv. to 40'x50ft **clear span** of 65 ft diagonally, or21.66 yards.. Now add in walls, halls and furniture. Just how fsr do you think the longest shot would be? Most shotguns will keep everything inside a Q target at 10-15 yd. I have a ton of guns, my carry gun is on me most of the time and its a Ruger Security 9 loaded with hollow points. My bedside gun is a Rock Island Armory 12g, with a light mounted because its easy and basic to use if I'm tired during an intrusion. If I'm awake, that's when things get fun. I have a M&P 15, which can easily keep the pests at bay. =)

There’s a lot to consider based off the situation and your surroundings. Such as unpredictable animals, distance, your accuracy with that weapon, and what could be behind that threat. At the end of the day, I just assume use a pistol with hollow points. I live in a trailer park (trailers having thin and soft outer walls), and we have some small dogs that would be going after the threat.

You can just run some hollow point .223/5.55 rounds they are already good at fragmenting at speeds above 2600 fps even with fmj rounds but with a hollow point the brass jacket will fragment and the lead core expands to cause gnarly damage but not over penetrate

Well…I’m going with the one that gives me more rounds, more maneuverability, less recoil , better ergonomics and handling. Then I’m loading it with the proper rounds designed to dump energy and not pass through such as the Speer which is what I’ve heard most LEO use in their duty rifles for that exact purpose and reason.

@@Impalaplayer Why do You Think You use the gold dots dummy. I would also hope you aren’t just blindly shooting like a scared little girl. It’s a rifle that is easily accurate to 300 meters. You can’t put hits on target at 20 feet or Less ? If you are going to miss with an AR within home defense range you should probably just buy some pepper spray and dial 911 and hope they send someone that can shoot and they get there fast enough

The buckshot on the vest looked brutal despite not penetrating. I would have loved the comparison with slugs though. A 1 oz slug in some loads out of some barrels will provide up to 3000 ft/lbs of energy which is nutty. Buckshot's strength is that it's almost like shooting 8 or 9 9mm bullets at someone in one group.

In CQB it's going to be a shotgun but you could use controlled chaos ammo which is basically like a shotgun in a rifle round put together😅... The ammo for shotguns to defeat rifle and standard body armor are called sabo usually rounds or at least designed like the ones in tanks They put us really strong penetrator and high speed and if you want to get a more legal one you could use brass because it's not true AP 🤔

I went with the AR-15 as my dedicated home defense firearm. As this video proves, it does exactly what it needs to do, right up there with a shotgun, but it also gives you a heck of a lot more shots, and the ability to reload very quickly. Also, a soft point 556 has less intermediate barrier penetration than 00 Buck. In addition, unless you have one of the bullpup shotguns, a 16" AR is more CQB friendly than an 18" shotgun. Oh, I forgot to mention less recoil, faster follow up shots, usually lighter... There are just so many advantages, I'll leave the shotgun for the fudds, lol.
