When China realised the harm from opium on it's people China tried to stop opium coming into China, but Britain forced China to continue taking opium in exchange for tea, silk, porcelain etc. So there were two Opium wars, loosing both China had to give up Hong Kong and made ports open to all plus other concessions. Magnificent buildings were destroyed. Loaning artifacts back to original countries is stupid, they should be considered on loan From the original countries requiring charging of fees to UK. The right thing to do, return them!

Saying they won't return the artefacts because it's available for all humanity is not correct, not everybody can have a visa or the money to go abroad to check his own countries heritage, also this is a touristic attraction, and a profitable one, why shouldn't people have their own stuff back so they can brand their own countries and cultures and attract tourists.

I think the British museum should return all these treasures to the countries of origin. They can display a replica, clearly marked as replica and that the original has been returned to its rightful owner. They should bear all cost of repatriation and should also pay an agreed annual sum to the country of origin for the rights to copy and display the replica. I think that's best for everyone concerned - the real owners, the museum and the tourists.

@alexdyk9813

The refusal of the British Museum returning foreign artefacts seems to be based on grounded reasons. It is an undeniable fact that a lot of these foreign artefacts originated from Asia and Africa, where majority of the globe's lower and middle-income countries are located. The fragility of some of these artefacts means rigorous conservation is required lest irreparable damage occurs. However, successful conservation requires ample financial resources, which is something lower and middle-income countries don't usually have. Political instability that has plagued several regions in Asia and Africa further bolsters the Museum's claims of being the most ideal custodian of these artefacts. Nevertheless, what the BM blithely ignores is the very fact that the issues they raised as legitimate reasons for denying repatriations were the artefacts of British imperialism, which is ironically the same institution that made the BM able to acquire these foreign artefacts in the first place! As if the modern manifestation of the "history repeats itself" cliché isn't clearer enough, the destruction of invaluable historical sites and works of art by ISIS was the ramification of US invasion of Afghanistan, a condemnable diplomatic action with the UK as US partner in crime! It is comical that as institution that is an integral part of the field of historical studies, the BM still unwilling to come to terms with the existence of the long and sorrowful shadows cast by its nation's past institutions.
