The Aspen has its own pump on board. I think about getting it and a hand pump for the majority of the pumping and the on board to maintain the pressure in the field.

I agree with you guys. Would much rather throw the cash towards a 17. If I need my pellet gun, I’ll go with the springer. Not sure where the recoil is.

Here in South Africa I can walk into a shop and buy a gas piston Crosman for a bit under R4 000 (kit scope included). Not an expensive model, but still a nice one overall if you don't mind the high South African prices. Compared to PCP: Almost the same price for an entry-level model with the same muzzle energy as the above Crosman. Plus R8 000 for a compressor. That's already approaching R12 000. Then the scope still needs to be added, so that makes it R13 000 or more, for the same caliber and the same muzzle energy. Sure, the shop can refill the tank. But that costs money every single time in terms of petrol, time going to the shop, and paying the shop for the recharge. And that's not really practical when you consider how you'd have to stop shooting, go to have it recharged, and then drive back to continue shooting.

Is a motorbike worth it? Is a guitar worth it? Is it worth paying to go to a fancy restaurant when you can eat more cheaply at home? Most of us aren't shooting airguns for survival, so pick what suits you and your pocket. Yeah you need air tanks etc, but it's insignificant compared to what I pay even for optics. If there's nowhere you can buy good quality HPA where you are located could you consider Nitrogen? If you like Gamo the GX40 is a fine basic PCP with lots of scope for upgrading 👍

It's not just the fact of the absurd cost of the non standard equipment, but that's a big part of it. The additional equipment is all insanely priced, even the manual pump! Plus you're a slave to it. I don't normally bench shoot, so being a slave to a bench is not fun for me. Heck I would love to hear about reasonably priced compressor equipment or a manual pump even. I would especially be keen to a more efficient manual pump at a reasonable price. My 3 lb garage compressor cost 30 bucks, the compressors needed for these guns are around 300. Plus the fittings, plus the seals, all non standardized. I like muzzleloaders, but they require extra equipment. I can get a full portable load out with everything I need to keep that gun running for under a hundred bucks, that includes powder, ball, cleaning, etc. Plus everything is standard for any muzzleloader. If there's something I'm missing when it comes to PCP, seriously I want to hear about it. It's a neat concept, but it's too complicated and expensive to be worth my time.

@@rifleman17hmrshooter Well, IMHO it's important to use what you enjoy and enjoy what you use, whether that be springer, PCP, 12ga, bow or whatever. I use the lot so there's no best or worst where enjoyment is concerned, although some tools are better for a certain job than others. Not sure why you're so concerned about "non standardised" so much. All springers don't use the same spring and seals, parts aren't standardised across brands. O Rings cost pennies and last years and all my PCP kit has Quick Couplers / Foster Fittings so everything is compatible as far as air filling is concerned. Certain brands like to try and WoW from from their wallets by over engineering and over pricing, but it's not necessary. A PCP doesn't have to be complicated. Essentially the firing mechanism consists of a plenum that equalises to a set pressure, then when you pull the trigger the spring loaded Hammer strikes a pin valve which releases that bite of Air through the transfer port. Nothing to it really. Lots of home made examples floating around. For sure there is an extra cost to buying tanks or a pump but once you have them you have them. Hill Mk5 Pump is one of the best around and is currently showing as 219 USD at AOA. Lots of Nitrogen shooters too. Air is already 78% N so as long as any potential asphyxiation risks are mitigated it can be a good choice. We have a huge stock at for purging AC lines. With a springer you have to re-load the spring before every shot, with a PCP you get the option of topping up after every shot, or before, or every so often. There is usually no need to run to empty and then hand pump to completely full every time. Shooting the advantages of PCP vs Springer are that if you are realistic about the required power they can be very quiet with a moderator, where a springer will always have the acoustic noise of the moving piston slapping home, and rapid follow up shots. If you are after small game or pest controlling they don't always know they're being shot at with a PCP so you can get a lot more opportunity for follow up shots. Also if you like to use prone or similar you can follow up shots without breaking your shooting position, but with a springer you have to get up and down again after every shot. Recoil is a word I don't like to use with airguns as the felt movement is not a reaction in opposition to a projectile being fired, but that be as it may the increased mass of moving parts in a springer will punish you more for bad form or a comprimised position than a PCP as a springer will bounce differently if supported differently. Any gun will, but for a given power level PCP move much less. If you can shoot well you can shoot well, however due to the reduced mass of moving parts for a given skill level generally a shooter will be able to shoot more precisely with a PCP than a springer so usually you can nail humane shots further with a PCP. Not a problem either way, if you have decent field craft, but if you have limited time the PCP lets you send more lead. If you do decide to try a PCP don't get caught up in that silly D*** Swinging contest get in to. A GX40 or Coyote with an after market regulator fitted is pretty air frugal and puts a lot of more expensive setups to shame.

Crazy how most PCP rifles cost more than a 22lr... Still, I picked up an umarex origin 22 PCP for around $325 so I can shoot in my yard and it's been great for pest control and target practice. Just my personal experience

It’s hard to justify until you own and shoot one. I thought for years my springs are “all I need” until I got my first pcp and that all changed. The power, accuracy and long range performance is well worth it.

Springer or nitro piston air rifles actually have a specific type of recoil. It's a "double recoil" that requires a certain hold and will destroy scopes... If you're going to have a discussion about something at least be somewhat knowledgeable in the subject 🫡

Your prices are a little outdated. Don’t get me wrong I love my springers. But the hand pumps aren’t nearly as much work as you portrayed. I am an older fellow and can easily pump my little pcp from near empty to 3000 psi in less than 10 minutes.

And just to be clear I say this out of excitement to get others into airguns not trying to be rude. One of the things said about you can’t take a pcp out hiking around you’re gonna loose air pressure isn’t true, my guns will sit for weeks and never loose pressure, I’ve also had my $3k plus air rifle on some good hikes where I took a turkey this spring with a single headshot at over 50 yards. The air rifle was so quiet the other turkey coming into the area didn’t hear a thing and my buddy was able to follow up with a double for the day. Depending on the air rifle how it’s tuned and what caliber you’re shooting you can get dozens of shots to over 100 shots on a single fill of the tank on the gun. Everything sounds like a hassle “oh I need an air compressor I need this accessory” but all that is a one time buy and once you have it it works for all your pcp air rifles. Trust me I was the same way “my springer is just fine if I need anything more I will get my 22lr or 17hmr” and then I got to shoot a pcp and it changed my mind big time. I can go on and on with stories or more info but I suggest going out and finding somewhere you can get some hands on experience with one.

I hear a lot of excuses from a non serious airgunner if you dont think piston movement is like recoil. I get 160 shots on a fill at your power level(my low power) , and extreme precision. On hi power I get 22 long performance to 250 yards at the noise level of a rimfire dry fire. Sure its expensive but more precise than my competition rimfire. How about stop being a poor and skip walmart. Buy once cry once. I too once thought like you and now ive built an fx that gives prs precision and price a run for it money. My powder burners including competition grade ones are almost retired for fun use. 230 yard accuracy and power with an air rifle that is silent.....

1: I'm not taking down anything. 2: I understand spring recoil, but most folks I talked to complained about felt recoil. Big difference. I don't have any argument about spring recoil, it's a scope killer. If you pay attention to the video, most of the complaint is about the absurd cost of everything that makes the rifle impractical. If the darn hand pump, at the very least, wasn't 250 bucks on the low end, yeah I bet I'd have a way different opinion on the matter.
